Multivariate analyses of genotype x environment interaction of popcorn

Abstract: the objectives of this work were to evaluate the genotype x environment (gxe) interaction for popcorn and to compare two multivariate analyses methods. nine popcorn cultivars were sown on four dates one month apart during each of the agricultural years 1998/1999 and 1999/2000. the experiments were carried out using randomized block designs, with four replicates. the cv. zélia contributed the least to the gxe interaction. the cv. vi?osa performed similarly to cv. rosa-claro. optimization of gxe was obtained for cv. cms 42 for a favorable mega-environment, and for cv. cms 43 for an unfavorable environment. multivariate analysis supported the results from the method of eberhart & russell. the graphic analysis of the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (ammi) model was simple, allowing conclusions to be made about stability, genotypic performance, genetic divergence between cultivars, and the environments that optimize cultivar performance. the graphic analysis of the genotype main effects and genotype x environment interaction (gge) method added to ammi information on environmental stratification, defining mega-environments and the cultivars that optimized performance in those mega-environments. both methods are adequate to explain the genotype x environment interactions.
Performance of testers with different genetic structure for evaluation of maize inbred lines

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate four maize testers for identification of superior inbreed lines in testcross. the four testers evaluated are cultivars with narrow or wide genetic base (single-cross hybrids and open pollinated varieties) and two kernel types (flint or dent). synd and synf testers are open pollinated varieties with dent and flint kernels, respectively, and fsh and dsh testers are single-cross hybrids with flint and dent kernels, respectively. synd tester showed the biggest genetic variance among the maize inbreed lines in crosses. the effects of general combining ability (gca) for lines and specific combining ability (sca) for lines x testers were significant, whereas gca effects for testers were not significant. synd and synf testers identified the largest number of lines with higher gca. the dsh and fsh testers showed suitable to identify lines with high sca. it was concluded that synd and synf testers are adequate to identify inbreed lines with high gca effects, and it's possible to identify new lines with high heterotic potential in each one of the four testers.
Combining ability of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress

Abstract: the objectives of this work were to caracterize the tropical maize germplasm and to compare the combining abilities of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress. a diallel was performed among tropical maize cultivars with wide adaptability, whose hybrid combinations were evaluated in two sowing dates, in two years. the significance of the environmental effect emphasized the environmental contrasts. based on grain yield, the environments were classified as favorable (8,331 kg ha-1), low stress (6,637 kg ha-1), high stress (5,495 kg ha-1), and intense stress (2,443 kg ha-1). none of the genetic effects were significant in favorable and intense stress environments, indicating that there was low germplasm variability under these conditions. in low and high stresses, the specific combining ability effects (sca) were significant, showing that the nonadditive genetic effects were the most important, and that it is possible to select parent pairs with breeding potential. sca and grain yield showed significant correlations only between the closer environment pairs like favorable/low stress and high/intense stress. the genetic control of grain yield differed under contrasting stress environments for which maize cultivars with wide adaptability are not adequate.

Abstract: the objective of this paper was to evaluate the potential of breeding and genetic divergence in nine tropical popcorn cultivars. the genetic divergence was estimated using multivariate analysis techniques and the cultivars were grouped based in mahalanobis' generalized distance (mgd), using tocher's optimization and graphic dispersion. the best cultivars concerning the yield grain above 3 ton/ha were cms 43, iac 112, vi?osa, cms 42 and branco, and to popping expansion above 24 (v/v) were iac 112, rs 20 and zélia. the estimates of mgd indicated the pairs genetically more distant (rs 20, beija-flor) and (rosa-claro, rs 20) as well as pairs genetically more similar (iac 112, vi?osa) and (branco, cms 42). tree or four genetic divergences groups were formed depending on the method. to popcorn breeding, cultivars with best potential are rs 20, zélia, iac 112, and beija-flor. the cultivars show genetic divergence.
Genetic control of grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency in tropical maize

Abstract: the objectives of this work were to study the genetic control of grain yield (gy) and nitrogen (n) use efficiency (nue, grain yield/n applied) and its primary components, n uptake efficiency (nupe, n uptake/n applied) and n utilization efficiency (nute, grain yield/n uptake), in maize grown in environments with high and low n availability. experiments with 31 maize genotypes (28 hybrid crosses and three controls) were carried out in soils with high and low n rates, in the southeast of the state of minas gerais, brazil. there was a reduction of 23.2% in average gy for maize grown in soil with low n, in comparison to that obtained with high n. there were 26.5, 199 and 400% increases in nute, nupe, and nue, respectively, for maize grown with low n. the general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) were significant for gy, nue and nupe for maize grown in high n soil. only gca was significant for nupe for maize grown in low n soil. the gca and sca for nute were not significant in either environment. additive and non-additive genetic effects are responsible for the genetic control of nue and gy for maize grown in soils with high n availability, although additive effects are more important.

Abstract: phosphorus (p) deficiency has been reported to reduce nitrogen uptake (n) in maize, but the effect of this combination for parent selection still needs further studies. the objective of this work was to evaluate the interrelationship between p and n in the combining ability and parent selection in maize. twent-eight hybrid combinations (ch), obtained from a complete diallel among eight maize genotypes, and three controls were evaluated in four environments characterized by a combination of high and low p and n availability. grain yield (gy) and the secondary traits plant height (ph), ear height (eh), harvest index (hi), volumetric weight (vw), prolificacy (prl) and dry weight of aerial parts (dwap) were evaluated. the effect of nitrogen stress on gy was similar in the conditions of low and high p. the genotype p3041 showed high gy in all environments. genetic correlations among secondary traits with gy were affected by all environments. in high p, the general combining ability (gca) for gy was significant only in high n. in low p, gca of gy showed significance at both n levels. the genotypes ag1051 and p3041 had positives estimates of gca for gy in all environments. it was conclude that for grain yield, the gca alone is not important at high p and low n and the specific combing ability is not important at low n or p.

Abstract: this paper inquires into the educational strategies used in the so-called interpretative tracks for environmental education. we ask, 'which territories are those receiving guides and students in environmental educational activities? which questions are made when walking? which are not made? which features turn a route into a track? which territories and tracks shape the ways for environmental education? to approach these questions the paper will focus on two different trials. first we have approached some aspects of the construction of an interpretative track in the community of pantano do sul in florianópolis, sc. about this track, meant to be performed with students from primary schools, above all, we inquire into the process culminating in designing its lines. in the second part, we have focused on the interpretative tracks in a state reserve near porto alegre, rs. to do so, processes of disciplining subjects, and discursive production of an untouched nature, are necessary. analyses conducted in the essay are in the challenged multi-faceted cultural studies field. in this field, work is carried out into readings on nature in the environmental education activities focused in this essay: the so-called interpretative tracks. furthermore, from the cultural studies we can inquire into the understandings on nature (and the way we act regarding it), from practices and discourses involved from planning and using an interpretative track to the moment when an educational work is developed in such spaces.

Abstract: Cholangiocarcinomas are primary malignant tumors of the liver that arises from the epithelium lining the small intra and extrahepatic bile ducts, and has numerous histologic types and growth patterns. At computed tomography (CT) and magnetic ressonance (MR), it has various appearences which motivated the present study; we present a case within an atypical presentation. The objective is to show the variety of differential diagnoses before an atypical aspect and the importance of the imaging methods for the diagnosis. Cholangiocarcinoma is still an uncommon neoplasm, and CT and MR are crucial for accurate diagnosis and for differentiation from other hepatic tumorous and nontumorous lesions.

Abstract: with the aim of contributing to the improvement of efficiency and effectiveness of units of competitive intelligence (ci) in the area of people management, the goal of this study was to develop a model for mapping knowledge, abilities and attitudes of ci professionals, with a view to establishing the process for competence-based management. the method adopted was action research and the application was conducted at the center for technological information in materials (nit/materiais) at the federal university of s?o carlos. the results were: a) a reference frame for supporting the mapping of competencies in ci; b) a glossary of competence attributes of ci (knowledge, abilities and attitudes); c) the tool "collector of perceptions of competence", for the collection and analysis of attributes of competence; and d) procedure to start the management of individual competencies. from the results obtained and the discussion raised about the theme of competencies in ci, it is possible to conclude that the model for mapping could contribute to the creation and development of ci teams, from the perspective of continuous improvement.

Abstract: objectives: to describe body composition alteration patterns (body weight, height, body mass index - bmi), percentage of body fat and skinfold thickness, and to compare menarche's age of athletes and non-athletes. methods: we evaluated 165 girls (aged 9 to 17 years old) non-athletes and athletes of swimmers grouped according to maturational groups (pre-puberty, puberty e post-puberty). the anthropometric variables followed standardized rules. the percentage of body fat was estimated by an equation validated for the studied population. the age of menarche was established through the record method. results: there was no difference between groups in the pre-puberty stage. in the puberty stage, the athletes showed lower triciptal skinfold mean values (athletes = 15.5 + 15.3; non-athletes = 20.1 + 7.0, p < 0.05), and subscapular (athletes = 14.7 + 5.1 e non-athletes = 20.6 + 10.3, p < 0.05), percentage of body fat (athletes = 25.2 + 5.9 e non- athletes = 28.4 6.0, p < 0.05), and the fat mass (athletes = 8.7 + 3.5 and non-athletes = 9.8 + 3.7, p < 0.05). these results remained in the post-puberty stage. menarche occurred later in the athlete group (athletes = 12,0 + 1,04 e non-athletes = 11,2 + 1,37, p < 0.05). conclusions: in athletes, some changes in body composition seem to take place, particularly the amount of body fat which could be associated with late menarche.
