Abstract:

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) reduces surgical trauma and hospital stay, but requires effective and safe postoperative analgesia. This prospective and double-blind study investigated the effects of analgesia with tramadol combined with either dipyrone or ketorolac on the postoperative renal function of patients submitted to LC. Methods: Pre-and post-operatively (PO), estimated glomerular filtration rates (GFR), obtained by two formulas dependent on blood Cr and one on blood cystatin C values, and tubular enzymuria—alkaline phosphatase (AP), γ-glutamiltransferase (γ-GT)— were determined in well hydrated patients who underwent LC and analgesia with tramadol combined with either dipyrone (Dipyrone, n = 63) or ketorolac (Ketorolac, n = 63). Upon discharge from the post-anesthetic care unit (PACU), pain (through Verbal Numerical Scale—VNS) and need for rescue analgesia with morphine were evaluated. Results: There was hemodilution PO, which made GFR profile analysis more difficult—those dependent on Cr increased and statistically correlated, but those dependent on cystatin C did not change. There was a significant PO increase in AP in the Dipyrone and Ketorolac groups, and in the product of the both enzymes in the Ketorolac group. Upon PACU discharge, the Dipyrone group showed signifi

cantly higher VNS scores than the Ketorolac group. All patients received morphine PO, and the total dose needed for pain control differed between groups, but without statistical significance. Conclusions: The association of tramadol with dipyrone or ketorolac in well hydrated patients submitted to LC had similar analgesic effectiveness in the PACU. Postoperatively, the effect on GFR may have been masked by hemodilution, and enzymuria was discreetly enhanced when ketorolac was used.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Coffea canephora aqueous extract (Cc), trigonelline (Tg) and 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) against cariogenic microorganisms: Streptococcus parasanguinis ATCC 903 (SP), Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595 (LR); and pathogens related to periodontal disease: Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 (PG), Fusobacterium nucleatum ATCC 25586 (FN), Prevotella intermedia ATCC 49046 (PI) and Prevotella nigrescens ATCC 33563 (PN). Different concentrations of Cc (0.15625 to 10 mg/mL), Tg and 5-CQA (0.005 to 10.24 mg/mL) were tested. Chlorhexidine (0.05%) was used as positive control and the substances without the inoculum comprised the blank control. The Cc showed bacteriostatic action against SP (MIC = 5 mg/mL) and LR (MIC = 10 mg/mL). Tg showed bacteriostatic action against SP (MIC = 2.56 to 1.28 mg/mL), LR (MIC = 2.56 mg/mL), PG (MIC = 2.56 to 1.28 mg/mL), FN (MIC = 5.12 mg/mL), PN (MIC = 2.56 mg/mL), and PI (MIC = 2.56 to 1.28 mg/mL). Also, Tg showed bactericide properties against SP (MBC = 2.56 mg/mL), PG (MBC = 2.56 mg/mL), FN (MBC = 10.24 mg/mL), PN (MBC = 5.12 mg/mL), and PI (MBC = 2.56 mg/mL). Although 5-CQA has previously shown activity against Streptococcus mutans, in the present study, it showed no activity against all tested microorganisms. C. canephora extract only showed antibacterial activity against cariogenic microorganisms, not presenting action against periodontal pathogens. It was concluded that trigonelline presented the best effect against all pathogens tested, therefore coffee extracts with higher trigonelline content should be tested against these specific pathogens.

Abstract: the objective in this work was to evaluate the effects of lime and zinc levels, as well as their interaction on development in castor bean plants. the hypothesis of this work is that the lime levels reduce the zinc availability in soil for the plant. the experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions without temperature control, in pots with 17 dm3 of 'dystrophic red latosol', medium texture. the statistical design was of randomized blocks, in a 3 x 5 factorial scheme, with four replicates. the treatments consisted of liming to reach three basis saturations: 40, 60 and 80%, combined with five zinc levels: 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mg dm-3. only one plant per pot was grown up to 174 days after emergence (first mature raceme), at which point the morphologic and production components of plants were evaluated. higher lime levels resulted in greater number of seeds per plant and dry matter of seeds per plant. there was interaction of basis saturation and zinc in plant height, in dry matter of root and in length of raceme (masculine part and total). however, none of these increases reflected a significant difference in weight of 100 castor bean seeds.

Abstract: the causal attribution theory represents an interesting theoretical framework in which to analyze how students explain their academic success or failure. this paper analyzes if the causal attributions are different according to gender and school grade. the sample comprised 868 students from 5th to 9th grade. the evaluation of the attributions was conducted by means of a school results attribution questionnaire (known in brazil as qare), in which students rank six possible causes (effort, studying methods, academic background, teacher support, luck and ability) according to their importance in explaining personal academic successes and failures. the data suggest that students, regardless of gender and grade, related their academic achievement (success and failure) to effort, citing poor studying methods as a secondary reason to explain academic failure. progressing through the school system, the academic knowledge base becomes more important when explaining success at school. on the other hand, male students resort more to ability to explain their academic success, while female students cite effort and existing academic knowledge. for the explanation of failure at school, effort and studying methods are more significant than lack of ability as their education progresses, which seems to reinforce the students' self-esteem.

Abstract: a well known phenomenon, the "built-up edge - bue", occurs at the chip/tool interface when multiphase materials are machined at low cutting speeds. under high compressive stresses, seizure prevents the material from sliding over the tool?s rake face. although many reports have been published on the subject, studies of the bue phenomenon have been marked by a lack of precision in determining its dimensions. this paper reports on a study of the bue geometry of a sae 12l14 steel machined at low speeds with and without a cutting fluid. three quick-stop samples were prepared for each test condition (9 cutting speeds, with and without cutting fluid). the quick-stop samples were mounted perpendicularly in transparent acrylic resin to facilitate observation and the hardened resin sandpapered. the opposite face of the mounted sample was then ground to make the front and back faces parallel. after sandpapering and polishing, the samples were digitally photographed and their bue geometries determined using an image analyzer. the measurements were done along the cutting width at five different points. it was found that the bue dimensions varied considerably along the cutting width, and that the fluid reduced the bue at the lowest cutting speed tested.

The objective in this work was to evaluate the effects of lime and zinc levels, as well as their interaction on development in castor bean plants. The hypothesis of this work is that the lime levelsreduce the zinc availability in soil for the plant. Abstract: The inserts from the selected clones were amplified by PCR with the universal oligonucleotide primers M13R and M13F. The obtained products were purified and fixed in duplicate on glass slides specific for use in DNA microarrays. The number of spots on the microarray totaled 6,144 and included 768 positive controls and 624 negative controls per slide. Validation of the platform was performed through hybridization of total DNA probes from XAC labeled with different fluorophores, Cy3 and Cy5. In this validation assay, 86% of all PCR products fixed on the glass slides were confirmed to present a hybridization signal greater than twice the standard deviation of the deviation of the global median signal-to-noise ration. Our validation of the XACArray platform using DNA-DNA hybridization revealed that it can be used to evaluate the expression of 2,365 individual CDSs from all major functional categories, which corresponds to 52.7% of the annotated CDSs of the XAC genome. As a proof of concept, we used this platform in a previously work to verify the absence of genomic regions that could not be detected by sequencing in related strains of Xanthomonas.Citrus canker, or cancrosis, is a disease that affects most species of the Citrus genus [1]. Its symptoms can be observed on leaves, fruits or branches and are characterized by small, pointed and spongy pustules that are surrounded by a chlorotic halo on both sides of the leaf. This halo tends to spread quickly through the tissue, increasing its diameter and becoming brownish or darker in color with a rough and salient appearance [2]. The causal agent of cancrosis is the bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (XAC) [3], more recently renamed as Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri [4,5] whose genome was completely sequenced in 2002 [6] and compared with others organisms [6-8]. Data from this sequencing project revealed that the XAC genome contains a circular chromosome of 5.2 Mbp and two plasmids (33 and 64 Kbp), containing a tota
