Abstract: in natural grassland ecosystems deficient in available p, the temporary immobilization of p in microbial biomass and its subsequent mineralization can be considered a potential mechanism of p supply to plants. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of burning and grazing of grassland vegetation on the dynamics of soil p, with emphasis on the content of p immobilized in microbial biomass. the treatments consisted of the combination of grazing (presence or absence) and burning (presence or absence) in a natural grassland on slope and lowlands after 13 years under a management involving burning and grazing. burning and grazing were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. soil samples were collected from the 0-10 cm layer twice during the growing period of native pasture, always immediately after grazing. the stocking rate was calculated based on a utilization rate of 20-35 % of existing forage mass. the p content stored in the soil microbial biomass, the total p content and total organic p in soil were determined. the statistical analysis was based on analysis of variance by randomization tests. the microbial p content of natural pasture ranged from 11.4 to 57.3 mg kg-1, representing on average 38 and 32 % of total organic p in soil in the first and second evaluation, respectively. the p immobilized in microbial biomass is a potential reserve of p that can meet the demand for native species in natural pastures, and is a more sensitive indicator than the total organic p content of the soil to detect changes induced by grazing. management of natural pastures with fire decreases the amplitude of the increase in microbial p due to grazing.

Abstract:

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two rest intervals on structural sward characteristics and productive performance of beef heifers reared on Campos grassland managed on rotational grazing. The treatments were two intervals between grazing of 375 and 750 DD (degree days), based on thermal cumulative sum for leaf expansion of native grasses belonging to two functional groups. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with two treatments and three replications. The tested animals were beef heifers with initial age of 12 months and average weight of 185.2 ± 17.4 kg. Measures in the pasture were: herbage mass, mass of green leaf blades, stem mass, dead material mass and green leaf allowance. The 750 DD rest interval presented higher herbage mass (24%), higher green herbage mass and 19% more leaves in the canopy. This rest interval also presents a high proportion of dead material and stems in the sward structure. In the other way, the 375 DD rest interval presents better chemical characteristics, with 20% more crude protein in the hand plucking samples. Heifers’ dry matter intake was similar between the rest intervals (2.04% of live weight) and the bite mass was also similar (0.22 g DM per bite) but the animal performance was higher in the 375 DD rest interval. The stocking density showed similarity between treatments with an average of 875 kg/LW/ha. The live weight gain per area was higher in 40 kg/LW/ha (P = 0.117) for 375 DD rest interval, reaching 251 kg/LW/ha produced over the 149 experimental days. Based on these results, we can conclude that the treatment of shortest interval between defoliation gave the highest gain individual

Paganismo e Cristianismo no Poema Beowulf
Jo?o Bittencourt de Oliveira
Brathair , 2010,
Abstract: The epic poem Beowulf is generally considered the oldest surviving epic in any other European language. It is also the longest piece of imaginative literature in Old English or Old Saxon and was composed during the seventh or eighth century by a gifted anonymous Anglian poet, probably a monk or a cleric, who succeeded in fusing Scandinavian history and pagan mythology with Christian elements. The poem refers to semi-historical events from a distant past which can be dated roughly to 520, since many of the persons referred to are known to us from other sources; it tells of Scandinavian kings and heroes and their feuds. The action involves not only Anglo-Saxons but also a few northern tribes, mainly Swedes, Geats, Frisians, and Danes. The poem, however, is genuinely English in spirit: it shows us scenes of real life, not in the 6th century Scandinavia, but in 7th or 8th century England. Through the story, the impressive and noble figure of Beowulf clearly represents the Anglo-Saxon heroic ideal of fighting prowess, generosity, and courage; in him, pagan fatalism or destiny is subtly harmonized with Christian qualities. The present paper is an attempt to examine the combination between pagan concepts and Christianity demonstrated in Beowulf.
Aventura e Magia no Mundo das Sagas Islandesas
Jo?o Bittencourt de Oliveira
Brathair , 2009,
Abstract: The Icelandic Sagas (among which the “family sagas” are included) remain one of the greatest marvels of world literature. Starting in the 9th century, in Iceland, the Age of the Vikings is also known as the Saga Age. Set around the turn of the last millennium, these stories depict with an astonishingly modern realism the lives and deeds of the ancient Scandinavian people who first settled in Iceland and of their descendants, who ventured farther west – reaching, according to some scholars, Greenland and, ultimately, the coast of North America. Until the 12th century, the sagas were oral, i.e. they were memorized in order to be recited at the fireside. Elements of foretelling and prophecy are nearly omnipresent in the sagas, though they never replace human actions and decisions as explanations of events. As a literary form, the sagas have some parallel to Irish literature, indicating that the impetus to write the sagas may have been inspired by Celtic traditions. Deeply rooted in the real world of their day, concise and straightforward in style, the sagas explore perennial human problems: they tell of love and hate, fate and freedom, crime and punishment, travel and exile. The Icelandic sagas are, to certain extent, important precursors of the modern novel. They directly influenced many writers, among them Walter Scott (Ivanhoe) and J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings). The sagas are also valuable sources of information about medieval Iceland, a subject of interest not only to medievalists. The present work intends to reunite and analyze some of the features of the Icelandic Sagas and their importance in understanding medieval Iceland, in the light of the most recent investigations.

Abstract: The use of non-timber is a valuable alternative for the conservation of tropical forests. Juçara (Euterpe edulis Mart.) is considered one of the main alternatives in the Atlantic Forest for the production of açaí pulp. However, there are few studies that aim to evaluate their production. The present study aimed to construct a probabilistic model to predict the production of Euterpe edulis bunches, using dendrometric variables and competition index. Twenty plots of 10 × 50 m were sampled in an area with said specie, showing the arboreal entities with diameter at breast height > 4.8 cm, and recording the Euterpe edulis phenomena. The main variables influencing the production of bunches were assessed using logistic regression model. The logistic regression showed the variables diameter breast height (DBH) and total height (h) as significant to explain the variation between productive and non-productive entities. The competition index tested was not significant (p-value = 0.221). The model of prediction of curl production in Juçara can be written as: Zi = -6.878594 + 0.2522454
