Simulation Models and GIS Technology in Environmental Planning and Landscape Management  [PDF]
Giuliana Lauro
Journal of Geographic Information System (JGIS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jgis.2013.53028

Landscape protection that, in the past, has been mainly concerned with its historical, artistic and cultural heritage, follows, nowadays, a systemic methodology that looks at landscape as a high level aggregate of spatial, ecologically different units that interact each other by exchanging energy and materials. Strategic environmental assessment, nowadays, has been adopted in Europe in landscape planning, whose task is to verify the compatibility of territory transformations with respect to their levels of criticality and vulnerability, to evaluate possible future scenarios as consequence of interventions by checking if they are in line with preservation and valorization of environmental. To this aim, we make here a short survey of three different simulation models that can be used as Decision Support System in landscape planning and management. They adopt tools of the Landscape Ecology and are based on GIS (Geographic Information System) technology. The first one consists of a planar graph, the so called ecological graph, whose construction needs the computation of suitable indices of environmental control, proper of Landscape Ecology, such as biodiversity, biological territorial capacity, connectivity. The planar graph, for the considered environmental system, returns a picture of its actual ecological health condition and provides very detailed indications and operational assistance for choosing among possible ecological sustainable interventions. The second one, based on the data used to construct the ecological graph, uses the least-cost path algorithm from GIS technology in order to build an ecological network to prevent and to reduce territorial fragmentation caused by intense processes of urbanisation and industrialisation. At last, an integrated GIS-based approach is developed combining an ecological graph model and a mathematical model based on a nonlinear differential equation of logistic-type with harvesting to perform qualitative predictions on the sustainability of a given territorial plan.

Should breast cancer survivors be excluded from, or invited to, organised mammography screening programmes?
Lauro Bucchi
BMC Health Services Research , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6963-11-249
Abstract: Problems with mammographic surveillance of breast cancer survivors include: weak evidence of a reduction in mortality; lack of evidence in favour of one setting or the other; lack of evidence-based guidelines for the frequency and duration of surveillance; disproportionate emphasis placed on the first few years post-treatment, probably dictated by surgical and oncological priorities; a variety of screening policies, as these women are permanently or temporarily or partially excluded from many - but not all - organised screening programmes worldwide; an even greater disparity in follow-up protocols used in the clinical setting; a paucity of data on compliance to mammographic surveillance in both settings; and a difficulty in coordinating the roles of health care providers. In the future, the use of mammography in breast cancer survivors will be influenced by the inclusion of women aged > 69 years in organised screening programmes and the implementation of multidisciplinary breast units, and will probably be investigated by research activities on individual risk assessment and risk-tailored screening. In the interim, current problems can be partially alleviated with some technical solutions in screening data recording, patient flows, and care coordination.Mammographic surveillance of breast cancer survivors is situated at the crossroads of numerous different specialist areas of breast cancer control and management. The solutions for current problems probably lie in some important modifications in the conventional screening procedure that are underway or under study. These developments appear to be directed towards a partial modification of the screening rationale, with an adaptation to meet the diversified breast care needs of women. The complexity of the matter constitutes a call to action for several entities to eliminate the barriers to effective research in this field.The prevalence of breast cancer (BC) in developed countries has steadily increased over recent de
A desigualdade de rendimentos do trabalho no período pós-Real: o papel da escolaridade e do desemprego
Ramos, Lauro;
Economia Aplicada , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-80502007000200006
Abstract: this study evaluates the evolution of earnings inequality in brazil based on the 1995 to 2005 national household surveys - pnads. it describes the behavior of both size and per capita household distributions, assessing the influence of changes related to labor force schooling on the former and of unemployment rate variations on the latter. synthetic indicators, based on the theil t index, for schooling inequality and earnings profile show that the role of education was quite important for the fall in inequality along the current decade, although the indications are ambiguous for the previous one. regarding the unemployment rate, microsimulations exercises that impose either the 1995 rate or zero unemployment lead to a decrease in the gini coefficient. however, the reduction is not very significant, meaning that the role of unemployment is limited. taking together, the findings point to the need of a more detailed investigation of other factors, including those related to the labor market institutional framework, in order to develop a better understanding of the recent changes in brazilian earnings inequality.

RSE - Comunicación para el Desarrollo. Sostenible en una empresa de servicio básico y social: Caso Aysa
Cuadernos del Centro de Estudios en Dise?±o y Comunicaci?3n. Ensayos , 2011,
Abstract: in this article the author shares a case leader developed by the water service company supplier in argentina, within the framework of the management of social corporate responsibility in whom a new concept in the professional management of the communication is introduced: cfd - communication for development, in a context in which the society is realizing that language 'builds the world'. also, it refects about the work of the communication professionals that is no longer to elaborate the appropriate messages and to communicate them of attractive way. the professionals must have the vision and the capacity to generate shared meaning and to cause a process of dialogue, negotiation and consensus with the public, on the base of a double way communication that gives the answers expected by society.
El paradigma emergente en educación y museos
Opción , 2006,
Abstract: this paper presents a panoramic perspective of relations that exist between traditional paradigms and the emerging paradigms in the study and practice of museum-graphics education. as a result of the on-going evaluation of research on visitors of museum spaces, we offer herein an integral typology of these same visitors, in which the traditional quantitative and qualitative typologies are integrated. finally we offer certain basic principles as to the spectacles in general, in order to derive these principles in the case of museum graphics. in the final section, based on the previous elements (the thesis of emerging paradigms, the integrated typology of the visitors, and the nature of the spectacles in contemporary society) we offer some proposals for the conceptualization of museum spaces in a society of spectacles.
A relevancia da família como unidade de análise nos estudos sobre pluriatividade
Mattei, Lauro;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032007000400011
Abstract: the pluriactivity phenomenon has been more studied in brazil in the 1990?s, when increased the papers about it in many regions of the country. the main issue related with the pluriactivity theme is the relevant unit of analyses. in according to the international literature, this article defends the idea that the family, and not the production unit, should be the north of the studies of pluriactivity in the brazilian family farming.
Desempenho recente do mercado de trabalho brasileiro: 1992-2005
Ramos, Lauro;
Revista de Economia Política , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572009000400006
Abstract: recent behavior of the brazilian labor market: 1992-2005. this study aims at describing the behavior of the brazilian labor market between 1992 and 2005. this period comprises significant changes in the economic scenario, in the midst of the process of opening the economy to adjust to the prevailing international economic order. in the one hand, the paper focuses on the time evolution of the main labor market indicators, trying to identify trends and stylized facts. on the other, it emphasizes aspects related to spatial patterns, particularly in terms of the metropolitan versus non-metropolitan behavior.
Abortion and Contraceptive Use in Sub-Saharan Africa: How Women Plan Their Families
D Lauro
African Journal of Reproductive Health , 2011,
Abstract: Based on available evidence, this review article posits that contemporary use of abortion in sub-Saharan Africa often substitutes for and sometimes surpasses modern contraceptive practice. Some studies and some data sets indicate that this occurs not only among adolescents but also within older age groups. In several sub-Saharan cities, particularly where contraceptive use is low and access to clinical abortion is high (though largely illegal), abortion appears to be the method of choice for limiting or spacing births. Even in rural areas, women may regularly resort to abortion, often using extremely unsafe procedures, instead of contraception. Available data seem to indicate that relatively high levels of abortion correlate with low access to modern contraception, low status of women, strong sanctions against out-ofwedlock pregnancy, traditional tolerance of abortion, and availability of modern abortion practices. Abortion has been and will likely continue to be used to plan families within much of sub-Saharan Africa (Afr J Reprod Health 2011; 15[1]:13-23).
Paradigmas & paradogmas ligüistico-redacionais
Lauro Dick
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2001,
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to identify the linguistic writing paradigms underlying the corpus of six grammarians and five writing guidebooks. To achieve this, first, the paper presents three possible concepts of paradigms: morphological, platonic-philosophical and kuhnian-scientific. Second, the study analyses, under the established criteria of empiricism, conceptualization and explanation, important materials written by Adriano da Gama Kury, Celso Luft, Luiz Sacconi, Napole o Mendes de Almeida, Pasquale Cipro Neto, Paulo Ledur and Editora Abril, Folha de S o Paulo, O Estado de S o Paulo, O Globo and Zero Hora guidebooks. The conclusion is that there are two patterns in the materials analysed: the prescriptive one of Almeida, Ledur, Sacconi and newspaper and magazine guidebooks and the descriptive one of Cipro Neto, Kury and Luft.
