The Effects of Preoperative Imaging on Surgical Outcome for Pediatric Appendicitis Patients Special Issue: Pediatric Surgery  [PDF]

Abstract: Computed tomography (CT) has been the major imaging modality for the diagnosis of appendicitis because of its excellent imaging resolution and the ease of interpretation, but a concern has been raised regarding radiation exposure. We have shifted from CT to ultrasonography (US) as the primary imaging modality because of this concern. A retrospective review is conducted to determine whether a combined US/CT strategy can reduce radiation exposure while maintaining the same surgical outcome. Five hundred eighty-six patients between 10 and 18 years of age who underwent an appendectomy from 2007-2011wereincluded in our study. The patients were classified as Early (prior to 7/1/2009) or Late (after 7/1/2009) with the knowledge that a conscientious institutional effort was made to start utilizing US as the primary imaging modality, limiting CT use to selective cases in 2009. The diagnostic imaging studies performed (CT, US or no imaging) were recorded. Operative findings, pathology reports and clinical course were reviewed. The rates of acute appendicitis (AA), negative appendectomies (NA) and perforated appendicitis (PA) were calculated. During the Early period, 49.3% of patients (n = 150) had undergone CT scans prior to their appendectomy whereas only 37.9% (n = 107) had CT scans during the Late period. Of the CT scans obtained during the Late period, only 18.4% of patients (n = 52) had a CT scan first, and 55 CT scans were done after an initial US. Abstract: The mass of the top quark was an active topic of research at CMS using 2011 data, and remains so as the 2012 data analysis campaign proceeds. Here we discuss some of the earliest results on the top mass using 2012 sqrt(s) = 8 TeV CMS data, including measurements of the top mass from semileptonic t\bar{t} decays and the lifetime of the B-hadron, as well as a measurement of the top-antitop mass difference.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the top quark mass using 19.7 $\pm$ 0.5 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV CMS data. In particular, we study dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ decays, in which a top-antitop pair decays to a final state containing two electrons or muons. We use the Analytical Matrix Weighting Technique (AMWT), and have performed the first blind top mass measurement at CMS. The mass of the top quark is measured as $m_t = 172.47 \pm 0.17(\text{stat}) \pm 1.40(\text{syst})$ GeV.
Habitat change and restoration: responses of a forest-floor mammal species to manipulations of fallen timber in floodplain forests

Abstract: In forests and woodlands, fallen timber (logs and large branches) is an important habitat element for many species of animals. Fallen timber has been systematically stripped in many forests, eliminating an important structural element. This study describes results of a 'meso-scale' experiment in which fallen timber was manipulated in a floodplain forest of the Murray River in south-eastern Australia. A thousand tons of wood were redistributed after one-year's pre-manipulation monitoring, while a further two-year's post-manipulation monitoring was conducted. The response of the main forest-floor small-mammal species, the Yellow-footed Antechinus Antechinus flavipes, to alterations of fallen-wood loads is documented. Results of the experiment will help to frame guidelines for fallen-timber management in these extensive floodplain forests.

Abstract: As far as design of direct injection spark ignited engine is concerned, the fuel injector is a key component for success. Internal flow simulation is the best adapted tool for the design of the internal geometry of the injector. First, simulations of the internal flow will be discussed, especially transient stages of an injection event as well as the prediction of the fuel characteristics at the nozzle exit. Second, a coupling between internal flow calculations and instability model in order to predict initial spray characteristics will be suggested. L'injecteur est un des éléments clés dans la conception des moteurs essence à injection directe. La modélisation de l'écoulement dans l'injecteur guide la conception de la géométrie interne. Dans une première partie, les aspects de cette modélisation seront soulevés, à savoir, l'écoulement transitoire en début et fin d'injection, ainsi que la prédiction des caractéristiques du carburant à la sortie de l'injecteur qui va conditionner les caractéristiques du spray. Dans une deuxième partie, nous évoquerons les théories d'instabilités à l'origine de la formation des sprays, ainsi que l'approche employée pour prédire les caractéristiques des gouttes générées.

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is associated with enhanced leukocyte infiltration to the gut, which is directly linked to the clinical aspects of these disorders. Thus, leukocyte trafficking is a major target for IBD therapy. Past and emerging techniques to study leukocyte trafficking both in vitro and in vivo have expanded our knowledge of the leukocyte migration process and the role of inhibitors. Various strategies have been employed to target chemokine- and integrin-ligand interactions within the multistep adhesion cascade and the S1P/S1PR1 axis in leukocyte migration. Though there is an abundance of preclinical data demonstrating efficacy of leukocyte trafficking inhibitors, many have yet to be confirmed in clinical studies. Vigilance for toxicity and further research is required into this complex and emerging area of IBD therapy.

Abstract: El objetivo de esta publicación es mostrar un caso de mastocitoma solitario en la vejez, debido a la rareza de su aparición en tal etapa. Sus diagnósticos diferenciales y la involución total de la lesión con el uso de apósitos hidrocoloides, son comentados. We present a case of a solitary mastocytoma in a man 86 years old who developped the lesion on the inferior lip. The interest of the case is the rarity of the presentation in an adult, which presents others differential diagnostics, and the success of the treatment with hidrocolloid dressings.
A Three-Dimensional Calculation of Atmospheric Neutrino Fluxes

Abstract: We present a three-dimensional calculation of atmospheric neutrino fluxes using accurate models of the geomagnetic field, hadronic interactions, tracking and decays. Results are presented for the Super-Kamiokande (SK) and Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) sites using the GEANT-FLUKA hadronic code. We make a comparison with previous one-dimensional calculations and other three-dimensional results. The recently reported geometrical enhancement of low energy, horizontal neutrinos is confirmed. The effect on observed leptons is however, restricted to a small overall increase in flux. We report east-west asymmetries for each of the neutrino species.
Combining Public Key Encryption with Schnorr Digital Signature  [PDF]

Abstract: This article presents a new signcryption scheme which is based on the Schnorr digital signature algorithm. The new scheme represents my personal contribution to signcryption area. I have implemented the algorithm in a program and here are provided the steps of the algorithm, the results and some examples. The paper also contains the presentation of the original Signcryption scheme, based on ElGamal digital signature and discusses the practical applications of Signcryption in real life. The purpose of the study is to combine the public key encryption with Schnorr digital signature in order to obtain less computational and communicational costs. Signcryption primitive is a better approach then Encrypt-then-Sign or Sign-then-Encrypt methods regarding the costs. All these algorithms offer the possibility to transmit a message over an insecure channel providing both authenticity and confidentiality.

Abstract:

In this paper the problem of practical stabilization for a significant class of MIMO uncertain pseudo-linear and pseudo-quadratic systems, with additional bounded nonlinearities and/or bounded disturbances, is considered. By using the concept of majorant system, via Lyapunov approach, new fundamental theorems, from which derive explicit formulas to design state feedback control laws, with a possible imperfect compensation of nonlinearities and disturbances, are stated. These results guarantee a specified convergence velocity of the linearized system of the majorant system and a desired steady-state output for generic uncertainties and/or generic bounded nonlinearities and/or bounded disturbances.
