Abstract: This work presents the pathology description, isolation and identification of canine herpesvirus (CHV-1) in Mexico, a virus that causes a generalized hemorrhagic infection in puppies from the canidae family. Methods: Isolates were obtained from puppies that died within the first four weeks of life and had lesions consistent with canine herpesvirus. Results: The main gross lesions were petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages in kidneys, liver and lungs; proliferative interstitial nephritis; multifocal necrosis in liver and kidneys; and encephalitis with intranuclear inclusion bodies. Herpesvirus was confirmed through direct immunofluorescence, electron microscopy and polymerase chain reaction for DNA polymerase and glycoprotein B genes. Discussion: Eight strains were isolated and identified as canine herpesvirus corresponding to three of the working cases with gross and microscopic lesions very similar to those described in the literature; then, isolates were confirmed by PCR gene amplification, positive reactions on immunofluorescence and observations from electron microscopy. This work represents the first report of this disease, including gross and histological lesions, and confirmation by isolation and identification of the canine herpesvirus in Mexico.

Abstract:
Canine herpesvirus (CHV-1) causes disease associated with high mortality in infect-ed puppies, which represents large financial losses for dog breeders. Since CHV-1 at the time of the study he had not been reported in Mexico, the main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of antibodies against CHV-1 in canine kennels in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. A commercial enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) was used, and the results were compared to those of a viral neutralization test. The ELISA kit uses the complete viral particle as the antigen. The plaque reduction neutralization test was combined with the immunoperoxidase technique because of the low cytopathic effect of CHV-1. Neutralizing antibodies were also detected in 20 randomly selected samples. The prevalence of CHV-1 with ELISA was 87%. The concordance between ELISA and serum neutralization (SN) was 0.1129, the sensitivity of the ELISA against SN was 1.0 (100%), the positive predic-tive value was 0.39 (39%), and the negative predictive value was 1 (100%). These results show that ELISA is useful for monitoring the dog population for CHV-1; a positive test result requires confirmation with an SN test, and a negative ELISA result indicates a high probability of being SN-negative. The only variables that were sta-tistically associated with CHV-1 prevalence were breed and kennel. A statistically significant relationship between the degree of ELISA and SN titer was obtained, with a confidence level of 95%. None of the clinical presentation factors was statistically significant. These results suggest that most of the canine population studied in Mex-ico is in a herpesvirus latency state.

Abstract: infectious pustular vulvovaginitis and balanoposthitis in goats is caused by caprine herpesvirus 1 (cphv-1), from the herpesviridae family alphaherpesvirinae subfamily, sometimes produces abortion, neonatal enteritis and respiratory disease in adult goats. in a herd of 244 dairy and meat goats, physical examinations were performed in does and bucks, presenting vulvar and preputial lesions. necropsies were done in four discarded animals (one male and two females) and one stillborn; immunohistochemistry (ihc) with bovine herpesvirus 1 (bhv-1) antibodies in prepuce and vulva samples was carried out. penis and prepuce exfoliative cytology was carried out in six bucks. prepuce biopsies were collected for electron microscopy and viral isolation. macroscopically, moderate to severe coalescent multifocal pustular and ulcerative vulvovaginitis was observed; and severe coalescent multifocal pustular and ulcerative balanoposthitis. microscopically, different degrees of inflammatory lesions with presence of eosinophilic and amphophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were present. in electron microscopy, the prepuce samples and mbdk cell culture showed several intranuclear viral particles of 150 to 230 nm size. there was slight epithelial cell positivity in ihc with bhv-1 antibodies in vulva and prepuce histological cuts made at necropsy. in the viral isolate was observed a cytopathic effect and the presence of viral particles by microscopy electronic suggesting herpes virus. this is the first documented report suggesting the presence of herpes virus outbreak in caprine herds in mexico.

Abstract: the goal of the present study was to determine whether there are differences between pathological gamblers in personality patterns and clinical syndromes as a function of rehabilitation or relapse. we followed up 176 gamblers from a rehabilitation centre who underwent therapy in self-help groups. therapy lasted 2 years and was divided into three 8-month phases. individuals who dropped out in the first phase were considered to have relapsed; those who dropped out in the second phase were considered to be cases of delayed relapse; those who stayed until the end of phase three were considered rehabilitated. participants were assessed using the millon multiaxial clinical inventory prior to treatment. we analyzed the differences in personality patterns and clinical syndromes between participants who relapsed in the first or second phase and those who achieved rehabilitation. in total, 61.93% of the participants achieved therapeutic success. the only significant difference was in the antisocial personality variable; participants who completed the treatment programme had lower scores in this variable. no differences were found in the number of people who were rehabilitated as a function of their previous clinical profile.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to compare the protective effectiveness of a homologous vaccine against pigeon avipoxvirus with that of a commercial heterologous vaccine against chicken avipoxvirus, by challenging pigeons with pigeon avipoxvirus. the pigeon avipoxvirus was isolated from skin lesions of infected pigeons and then inocculated on chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (cam). the virus was identified by histopathology, polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme analysis. subsequently, the virus was attenuated by several passages in cam and used as a vaccine when reaching a viral titer of 104.37 diep50%/ml. pigeons vaccinated with the homologous vaccine (n = 20) achieved serum neutralizing titers of 1/61,5 while those vaccinated with the heterologous vaccine (n = 20) achieved serum neutralizing titers of zero. finally, when animals were challenged with pigeon avipoxvirus, all pigeons from the homologous vaccine group were protected, while in the heterologous vaccine and non-vaccinated control (n = 20) groups, no protection was achieved. in conclusion, the use of an homologous vaccine against poxvirus when working with pigeons, generates neutralizing antibodies and confers a much better protection against infection when compared to the use of commercial vaccines made against the chicken poxvirus.

Abstract: A 64-year-old woman with IgA kappa multiple myeloma was treated with thalidomide-dexa- methasone. Due to progression of the disease, bortezomib, doxorubicin and dexamethasone were administered, followed by autologous stem cell transplantation. Although near-complete remission was achieved, 5 months later, neuro- logical symptoms appeared and the patient was diagnosed with multiple myeloma with cells in- filtrating the spinal cord. Bis-chloronitrosourea, bortezomib and lenalidomide were then admin- istered and although the patient remained neu- rologically asymptomatic, she died 3 months later becausee of disease progression. Lena- lidomide entered into the cerebrospinal fluid (confirmed by ultrasensitive high-performance liquid chromatography), although did not im- prove the poor prognosis of multiple myeloma involving the central nervous system.
