Electroencephalographic Recordings in the Canine: Effects of Low Dose Medetomidine or Dexmedetomidine Followed by Atipamezole  [PDF]
Laura C. Tepper, Andy Shores
Open Journal of Veterinary Medicine (OJVM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojvm.2014.42002
Abstract:

Objectives: 1) To describe electroencephalogram (EEG) appearance in the awake dog and compare these results with EEG recordings after low dose medetomidine (2 μg/kg IV) followed by atipamezole (10 μg/kg, IM); 2) To institute EEG recordings after low dose medetomidine or dexmedetomidine as a standard of practice if focal abnormalities and amplitudes were not significantly altered by pharmaceuticals in Phase 1 of this study. Methods: Electroencephalograms were performed on eight clinical canine patients with suspected intracranial disease involving the prosencephalon. A five lead montage was used to record the EEGs. Each dog had an awake, baseline recording followed by an EEG performed after administration of low dose medetomidine (2 μg/kg IV) then atipamezole (10 μg/kg, IM). In the second phase of this study, the same dose of medetomidine or dexmedetomidine at 1 μg/kg IV and atipamezole (10 μg/kg, IM) were used in the evaluation of 20 clinical patients with suspected neurologic disease. Results: In Phase 1, awake recordings were laced with movement artifacts. After medetomidine and atipamezole, EEG waveforms were slower. Following atipamezole, however, the frequencies were observed to increase with time. Statistical evaluation revealed significantly more artifacts in baseline recordings. No statistically significant change was observed in focal abnormalities or amplitude. In Phase 2, the a2-adrenoreceptor agonists followed by atipamezole without the use of lidocaine produced clinically reliable results. Clinical Significance: Quality and diagnostic electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings are frequently inconvenient to obtain in the awake dog. Movement results in artifacts and dislodged leads. Administration of low dose medetomidine or dexmedetomidine followed by atipamezole reliably reduced the impact of movement artifacts and produced clinically valid EEG recordings in dogs.

Self-Concept in Kindergarten and First Grade Children: A Longitudinal Study on Structure, Development, and Relation to Achievement  [PDF]

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2018.97097
Abstract: The self-concept refers to a multidimensional construct that organizes a person’s self-perceptions into a hierarchical structure comprising global and specific facets. Children’s self-concept, however, is believed to be less differentiated and less realistic, as children tend to systematically overestimate their abilities. Since little research has been conducted with children before the beginning of formal schooling, the present longitudinal study aimed to explore the structure of kindergarten children’s self-concept, its development during the transition to school, as well as the links between self-concept and achievement in first grade. Counteracting the positively biased self-ratings in children, self-concept was assessed by an innovative measurement instrument that allows for fine-tuned self-evaluations. Structural Equation Modeling showed that kindergarten children’s self-concept is already organized in a multidimensional structure, and thus, differentiates much earlier than previously believed. Like the self-concept of adults, kindergarten children’s self-concept is composed of domain-specific facets, comprising literacy, mathematical, peer-related and teacher-related self-concept aspects. Moreover, gender stereotype conforming differences—like boys having a higher mathematical and girls having a higher social self-concept—already seem to develop at such a young age. Upon first grade entry, children’s academic self-concept increases and becomes positively related to achievement, indicating at least some realism in children’s self-perceptions. Taken together, the findings provide new insights into the structure, development, and validity of young children’s self-concept, contributing substantially to the generalizability of a multidimensionally organized self-concept.

CICLO DE VIDA DE DERO (AULOPHORUS) COSTATUS MARCUS, 1944 (TUBIFICIDAE, OLIGOCHAETA) EN UN CUERPO DE AGUA CON VEGETACION FLOTANTE EN LOS TALAS, ARGENTINA
Armendáriz,Laura C;
Gayana (Concepción) , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-65382008000100004
Abstract: the life cycle (march 1996-march 1997) of dero (aulophorus) costatus was studied in a vegetated pond located at los talas, argentina. a change in the composition of the vegetation cover _developing azolla sp_ produced the displacement of allonais lairdi by the species here studied. inmature, mature and asexually reproductive specimens, forming chains of two zooids, were colected. length, wet and dry weight (65 °c, 24 h) of the organisms were registred. the spatial dispersion of the individuals, analyzed according to morisita's index, showed a random distribution. the population density fluctuated during the study (1.58 to 101.97 ind./g.d.w.vegetal.m2) due to an asexual reproduction, and two peaks of abundance were registred, in april, after a period of intense asexual reproduction and in december. the abundance was correlated with the water temperature (pearson coefficient r = 0.5906, p< 0.05) and especially with the plant biomass (r = 0.9211, p< 0.001). the organisms sexually mature were found in spring and at the beginning of summer (from october to january), comprising a low proportion (4.86 %) of the population. based on the sizes and weights of the individuals measured, the sucession of three cohorts was estimated: the first one developed from october to november (including the period of sexual maturation of the organisms), a second one from december to february and the last one in march.

Abstract: in this paper i assume that it is reasonable to claim, as michael devitt does, that a definite description can express, in certain contexts, a genuinely referential meaning, but i discuss the requisite, also defended by devitt, that the predicates involved in the description at stake should apply to the referred object. in so doing, i consider some cases of sentences containing definite descriptions constituted by general terms that, strictly speaking, don't apply to the intended object but are nonetheless intuitively true. along these lines, in the last paragraphs, i suggest that the role of the predicative material of a referential definite description can be regarded as secondary or instrumental, a mere guide to the identification of the object referred to.
Efectos de la temperatura sobre el crecimiento individual y formación de zooides en Stylaria lacustris (Linnaeus, 1767) (Oligochaeta, Naididae)
Armendáriz, Laura C.;
Biota Neotropica , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-06032007000200008
Abstract: the experiments carried out with s. lacustris showed that the temperature plays a role of importance in the rate of asexual reproduction, as for the number of zooids produced by individual, as well as to the size reached by them. on the other hand, it would regulate the rate of growth and the sexual reproduction, giving place to the maturity of the individuals when temperature increases. the life time of the immature individuals was estimated in 15 days, being this independent of the temperature used in the cultures. the mature individuals lived on the average 37 days. the survival in s. lacustris was falling gradually, following a curve of type lll. life expectancy presented its major value at the age of 16 days and stayed approximately constant up to an age of 28 days, after then falled persistently until the last reached age. the individual growth according to von bertalanffy equation, was estimated for the organisms maintained at 23 ± 2 °c and at 14 ± 1 °c. those individuals cultivated at higher temperature attained a bigger size, although their rate of growth was smaller than those maintained at 14 °c.

Abstract: The main topic of this book is the use of qualitative methods in what has become known as "reconstructive social pedagogy". "Reconstructive social pedagogy" is usually seen as a method but the authors show how to look at it from a different point of view. They perceive "reconstructive social pedagogy" as a paradigm named "narrative identity" and thereby create the opportunity to apply it in different contexts, e.g. in social work or social work science. They provide theoretical examples and explain possible methods by which to elaborate the paradigm. The examples they provide on how to look on narrative interview notes make this publication interesting not only for practitioners of social work but also for scientists and social work teachers. The authors use the conclusion to discuss central considerations, procedures and possible problems.
