Abstract: The paper describes the intervention protocol and addresses questions about the feasibility of a brief FASD prevention intervention delivered by OB/GYN at women's clinics in Russia. Brief physician intervention guidelines and two evidence-based FASD prevention interventions were utilized to design a brief dual-focused physician intervention (DFBPI) appropriate to Russian OB/GYN care. The questions answered were whether trained OB/GYN physicians could feasibly deliver DFBPI during women's routine clinic visits, whether they maintained skills over time in clinical settings, and which specific intervention components were better maintained. Data were collected as part of a larger study aimed at evaluating effectiveness of DFBPI in reducing AEP risk in non-pregnant women. Methods of monitoring the intervention delivery included fidelity check lists (FCL) with the key components of the intervention completed by physicians and patients and live and audio taped observations of intervention sessions. Physicians (N= 23) and women (N= 372) independently completed FCL, and 78 audiotapes were coded. The differences between women's and physicians' reports on individual items were not significant. Although the majority of physician and patient reports were consistent (N=305), a discrepancy existed between the reports in 57 cases. Women reported more intervention components missing compared to physicians (p<0.001). Discussing barriers was the most difficult component for physicians to implement, and OB/GYN demonstrated difficulties in discussing contraception methods. The results supported the feasibility of the DFBPI in Russia. OB/GYN physicians trained in the DFBPI, monitored, and supported were able to implement and maintain skills during the study. In addition to the alcohol focus, DFBPI training needs to have a sufficient component to improve physicians' skills in discussing contraception use.
Os trópicos na rota do Império britanico: a vis?o de Mungo Park sobre a áfrica em fins do século XVIII
Viana, Larissa;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702011000100003
Abstract: the young scottish physician mungo park, aged 23, arrived in africa in 1795 with a mission as specific as it was complex in those bygone days, namely to travel the entire length of the river niger. in 1799, the story of this journey was published in a book that sold 1500 copies in the first month alone, with two further editions published that same year, as well as the translation of the work into french and german the following year. in this article, the narrative of mungo park is examined by taking due consideration of the relationship between the tropics, science and travel in the early days of british expansionism into the heart of africa.
Belarus: A Borderland Civilization or Civilization Outskirts? Sociological Reflection
Larissa Titarenko
Limes. Cultural Regionalistics , 2009, DOI: 10.3846/2029-0187.2009.1.64-81
Abstract: The concept of civilizations plays an important role in the current scientific literature. Some authors select a particular number of civilizations. For other authors it is an open question how many civilizations exist: the answer depends on the criteria applied. The paper discusses the concept of the borderland civilization that relates to the countries (space) and people (cultural communities living in this space), situated "between" the two "key cultural groupings" (in Samuel Huntington's sense) and inevitably combines some features from both of them. The author argues that, firstly, the population on today's Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian border constitutes a particular borderland civilization where the local identity dominates over national or ethnic identities. Although other identities might be in use here, the population of this borderland region primarily considers itself as "local" where multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious communities have existed for centuries. Secondly, the current Belarus itself can be viewed as a case of a borderland sub-civilization: throughout its history it has been constantly influenced by Latin (Western) and Byzantine (Eastern) civilizations that resulted in Belarusian cultural pluralism, high level of religious and ethnic tolerance, and local self-identification of the population. Therefore, there is no "choice" for Belarus to belong to one "pure" civilization: it is destined to exist in the borderland. From this approach, current Belarus is not "civilization outskirts": it is a sub-civilization with all the attributes such as culture, values, ideas of history, and supra-national socio-cultural community of people.
Historical Memory, Embodied in the Social Space of Minsk, and its Influence on the Formation of National and European Identity of Belarusians
Larissa Titarenko
Limes. Cultural Regionalistics , 2008, DOI: 10.3846/2029-0187.2008.1.32-45
Abstract: Historical memory embodied in a social space of Minsk represents "cultural signs" of several different epochs. In fact, the historical past of Minsk up to the beginning of the XIX century can be considered as the process of construction of its European identity. In this aspect, the XIX century demonstrated a shift to Russian euro-asianism, while the soviet history was a unique attempt to construct the universal Soviet identity with only a few features of the national culture. The contemporary epoch gives Minsk a unique chance to simultaneously increase both European and national identity of Belarusians.
Post-Soviet Belarus: The Transformation of National Identity
Larissa Titarenko
International Studies. Interdisciplinary Political and Cultural Journal , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10223-011-0002-4
Abstract: The paper deals with the formation of a new national identity in Belarus under conditions of post-Soviet transformation. Under the term of "national identity" the author means the identity of the population of the Republic of Belarus that will be adequate to its status of a newly independent state acquired after 1991. Special attention is paid to the existing major research approaches to the problem of constructing this national identity. According to the author's view, both major approaches are inadequate; the author puts forward a new (third) approach that goes beyond discussions on language and national culture, and corresponds to the concept of plurality of identities. The author describes some paradoxes of national identity based on the opposition of "nation" and "people". These correspond to the Western model of the "creation of modern nations", which is not fully applicable to post-Soviet Belarus. All attempts to apply this model to contemporary Belarus lead scholars to several "cultural paradoxes" that can, however, be explained within a new approach.

URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs120268 Julia REUTER's latest book, "Geschlecht und K rper" [Gender and Body], contains ten studies on these two central concepts in sociology, as well as lending consideration to visuality and otherness. The author focuses on theories of performance, discourse and practice, which are used both as analytical tools and, reflexively, as objects of analysis. The book offers rich descriptions of the two central concepts, but does not fundamentally deal with how they interrelate. It offers a vivid account of current themes and discussions.

Determinants of New York City Residential Rental Prices
Larissa Marco
Michigan Journal of Business , 2008,
Abstract: Economists and financial analysts have invested a tremendousamount of energy in an attempt to explain housing sale and rental prices. Many different approaches have been taken to try to understand residential prices, taking into account qualities such as neighborhood characteristics and housing units’ physical characteristics. This paper considers the physical and demographic characteristics of New York City neighborhoods to better understand residential rental prices in this region. The empirical analysis reveals that premiums are charged for rental properties based on location in the following order: Staten Island, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, with Manhattan commanding the largest premium. High rental prices are also correlated with high median household incomes and high crime rates. Finally, increases in rental prices are correlated with increases in rent-regulated or rent-subsidized housing. At a certain point, however, the level of rent-regulated housing reaches its maximum and rental prices fall thereafter. Ultimately, this study offers a bundle of attributes that may be used to understand housing prices and establishes the attributes most relevant to the pricing equation. With this study, renters, landlords, and real estate developers can better understand the real estate market and make more informed decisions as players in the market.
