Einstein (S?o Paulo) , 2009,
Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the quality of life of women with urinary incontinence, as well as its association with other demographic and socioeconomic factors that may influence their perception of quality of life. Methods: A total of 50 patients were submitted to the Kings Health questionnaire and to other independent scales to evaluate severity of urinary incontinence, as well as presence and intensity of urinary symptoms. Rresults: One third of women considered their health status bad or very bad. Half of the patients referred that urinary incontinence symptoms greatly affected their quality of life. Patients with symptoms of overactive bladder and mixed urinary incontinence presented statistically higher scores of quality of life in the domain “sleep/mood”. There was no statistical difference between the groups concerning other quality of life domains, sociodemographic factors, and the correlation between bladder problem and general health perception. Cconclusions: Most women with urinary incontinence considered their health status from regular to very bad. The sociodemographic factors did not influence the quality of life of the patients studied. The Kings Health questionnaire showed a negative impact of urinary incontinence on patient’s quality of life.

Abstract:

The deficit of organ donors has fueled the need for advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Microencapsulation in alginate immuno-isolation membranes has been used to treat many disabling metabolic disorders, namely, phenylketonuria, kidney failure and diabetes mellitus. Systematic nutrient flux determinations are hindered by the lack of experimental data on alginate-based membrane topography and the pore size thus preventing the full therapeutic potential of the bio-membranes to be reached. In this study, samples of cross-linked alginate membranes were subjected to the following analytical characterization: 1) pore size characterization using atomic force microscopy operated in contact mode to detect and measure pore size; 2) differential scanning calorimetry to confirm biopolymer cross-linking; and 3) diffusivity measurements using spectrophotometry and fluorescence microscopy to confirm the presence of through pores and to calculate reflection coefficients. The pore sizes for the pre-clinical standard formulation of 1.5% (w/v) medium viscosity alginate cross-linked with 1.5% CaCl2 and 0.5% (w/v) alginate and

Abstract: The cotton cultivar DELTAOPAL is resistant under field as well as under glasshouse conditions to the Brazilian isolates of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. malvacearum (Xam). Segregating populations derived from the cross between this cultivar and one susceptible cv. BRS ITA 90, were utilized to identify molecular marker linked with the resistance gene to Xam by “Bulk Segregant Analysis (BSA)”. Two hundred and twenty microsatellite (Single Sequence Repeat—SSR) primers were tested. The amplification products were visualized in polyacrylamide gels stained with silver nitrate. Only one primer was informative and showed polymorphism between the DNA of the parents and their respective bulks of homozygous F2 populations contrasting for resistance and susceptibility, and hence was used to analyze DNA of 120 F2 populations. The microsatellite primer yielded one band of 80 bp linked with the resistance locus, which was absent in the susceptible parent as well as in the bulk of the homozygous susceptible plants of the cross. The segregation ratio as determined by phenotypic analysis was 3R:1S. It is believed that the microsatellite marker was linked with the resistance locus and hence may offer new perspectives for marker assisted selection against the angular leaf spot disease of cotton. It is however, felt necessary to repeat the microsatellite analysis and make sure that the primer is tightly linked with the resistance locus and at the same time verify the genetic distance between the marker and the resistance locus.

Abstract: Obesity has reached pandemic proportions in the world. Who is to blame for this: the person or the State (or both?). An increase in diseases associated with excess weight is also worldwide reported, such as Diabetes, Hypertension and some types of cancers. Therefore, the economic impacts of these comorbidities are an important issue to be discussed by States and citizens. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has set and classified obesity as a disease more than 30 years ago, the American Medical Society was until recently (2010) not so sure about this definition. This article discusses the relevance of the implementation of public health policies for prevention and control of obesity, along with the possible ethical limitations to these actions, considering the autonomy of individuals regarding their health.

Abstract:
The process described in the present work uses air supplementation in a fluidized bed reactor containing Bacillus firmus strain 37 immobilized on active bovine bone charcoal, to produce by batch fermentation the enzyme CGTase (cyclomaltodextrin-glucanotransferase). Three different aeration rates were evaluated. The maximum CGTase activity was achieved after 120 hours of fermentation with aeration rate of 2 vvm and was equal to 2.48 U/mL. When 0.5 and 1 vvm were used the enzymatic activities achieved 1.1 and 0.57 U/mL, respectively. Bovine bone charcoal was characterized in terms of surface area, pore size and volume. To the best of our knowledge, the immobilization of microorganism cells in bovine bone charcoal for CGTase production has not been reported in the literature. Our results showed that fluidized bed reactor allows retaining high concentration of biomass, improving biomass-substrate contact and operation at low residence times, which resulted in improved enzyme production. Therefore, the process as proposed has great potential for industrial development.
