Cross-neutralization of the coagulant activity of Crotalus durissus terrificus venom from the northeast of Argentina by bivalent bothropic antivenom
Rodríguez, JP;Gay, CC;Fusco, LS;Gauna, MC;Acosta, OC;Leiva, LC;
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992012000100015
Abstract: cross-neutralization of crotalus durissus terrificus venom coagulant activity was tested using bivalent horse antivenom against bothrops alternatus and bothrops diporus venoms. our in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that bothropic antivenom neutralizes the thrombin-like activity of crotalic snake venom and this cross-reaction was demonstrated by immunoassays either with whole venom or a purified thrombin-like enzyme. these results suggest common antigenic properties and, consequently, similar molecular structure among venom thrombin-like enzymes. besides, they provide information that could be further used in the development of new antivenom formulations.
---------------------------------------------- Déjà Vu: New Sights on Translation. Déjà Vu X is currently one of the most innovative computer-assisted translation tools that can be customized to fit the needs of each user. While other systems only display exact and fuzzy matches, Déjà Vu X intelligently searches the translation memory, the termbase and the project lexicon to increase the quality of fuzzy matches by assembling smaller segments and words. In the case of closer matches, Déjà Vu X usually produces translations which often resemble those suggested by translators themselves. Despite its apparent complexity, less experimented users quickly start working with the program thanks to a wide variety of wizards which guide the user through the application's main features.
A Case of Endometriosis in Episiotomy Scar with Anal Sphincter Involvement  [PDF]

International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2011.25104
Abstract: Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial tissue apart from its usual location (endometrium). It is the second most prevalent benign gynecologic disease after the presence of fibroids in women of childbearing age (incidence of 10% - 25%). Endometriosis predominantly locates on peritoneal surfaces, but it also affects the vagina, vulva, recto-vaginal septum and perineum, usually secondary to surgical or obstetric trauma. We present a case of a patient with perineal endometriosis (single nodule) in the scar of episiotomy and involvement of external anal sphincter with local and catamenial pain but with continence maintained. The endometric nodule was removed, and wide dissection and sphincteroplasty were performed. Afterwards, treatment with GnRh analogues was prescribed for a four-month period. Surgical outcome was successful and the patient was asymptomatic during subsequent menstruations.
Pathological and rhizospherical studies on root-rot disease of squash in Saudi Arabia and its control
LS Nawar
African Journal of Biotechnology , 2007,
Abstract: Isolations from diseased squash roots revealed the presence of Alternaria tenuis, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani and Rhizoctonia solani. The last two fungi were more frequent than any of the other fungi. Pathogenicity tests proved that squash plants were highly vulnerable to attack by Fusarium solani and Rhizoctonia solani in descending order, during the pre- and post-emergence stages. Isolates No.1 of F. solani and No.2 of R. solani were the most virulence pathogen and significantly retard the morphogenesis of survived squash plants. The in-vitro antagonistic effect of Trichoderma harzianum on root-rot pathogens revealed the presence of clear antagonistic action between them. The highest mean inhibition values were 78.86 and 41.94% RI against F. solani and R. solani, respectively. T. harzianum also exhibited a mycoparazitation associated with high level of growth reduction by its filtrate on the two pathogens. In vitro, benlate fungicide was found to be very toxic to the root-rot pathogens. Untreated squash seeds grown in the infested soil (positive control) with F. solani and R. solani showed higher percentage of infection. The plants grown under this treatment were significantly shorter with lesser weight than the corresponding figures of the other treatments. Soil or seed coated with T. harzianum and benlate had a significant lower percentage of infection (pre, post, dead plants and developed plants), significantly longer in height and better plant growth parameters. T. harzianum applied as soil or seed treatments enhancing the total microbial flora of squash rhizosphere at the first 30 days of plant growth and greatly increased the total fungal counts comparing with the corresponding figures of negative and positive controls. As the density of T. harzianum reached 99.3% and 100.0% in cultivated plants soil infested with F. solani and R. solani respectively, the other genera or species of fungi become greatly reduced or disappeared.

Postcolonial theory as a hermeneutical tool for Biblical reading
LS Rakundwa
HTS Theological Studies/Teologiese Studies , 2008,
Abstract: In this article, postcolonial theory is presented as a tool for Biblical interpretation, in an attempt to find colonial intentions (be they political, cultural or economic) that informed and influenced the writer's context. Although criticism has been levelled at the church and other religious institutions for having, consciously or unconsciously, facilitated colonial conquests and imperial establishment all over the world, postcolonial theory calls them to a constructive reading that enables readers to see the concerns of the universal mission of justice. Postcolonial theory, as a tool for Biblical interpretation, deals with the Bible as a “cultural product” in time and space. However, as part of socio-scientific method, postcolonial theory encounters some crucial translation problems such as ethnocentrism and anachronism. Nevertheless, whatever hermeneutical tool the reader uses, it must yield two important things from Scripture reading: discovering life and discovering faith.
