Abstract: Correlations for the extension of a water vapor jet injected in a liquid pool were historically proposed considering the mass flux (kg/m2/s) as a constant. The results were satisfactory, however adjusting the values by linear regression. Although, it presents the following drawbacks: 1) the formulation is only valid for the specific range of data for what it was created; 2) it does not allow the analytical evaluation of the heat transfer coefficient from the extension equation. This paper proposes a new formulation for the calculation of the mass flux, in such a way to remove both of these drawbacks.
Fluid dynamics of air in a packed bed: velocity profiles and the continuum model assumption
NEGRINI, A. L.;FUELBER, A.;FREIRE, J. T.;THOMéO, J. C.;
Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-66321999000400010
Abstract: air flow through packed beds was analyzed experimentally under conditions ranging from those that reinforce the effect of the wall on the void fraction to those that minimize it. the packing was spherical particles, with a tube-to-particle diameter ratio (d/dp) between 3 and 60. air flow rates were maintained between 1.3 and 4.44 m3/min, and gas velocity was measured with a pitot tube positioned above the bed exit. measurements were made at various radial and angular coordinate values, allowing the distribution of air flow across the bed to be described in detail. comparison of the experimentally observed radial profiles with those derived from published equations revealed that at high d/dp ratios the measured and calculated velocity profiles behaved similarly. at low ratios, oscillations in the velocity profiles agreed with those in the voidage profiles, signifying that treating the porous medium as a continuum medium is questionable in these cases.

Abstract: this paper intends to discuss ethics and care, its mutual relation and the implications of these concepts in the praxis developed in the public health services. so the authors adopted emmanuel lévinas's contributions as central reference in this essay. this discussion seems useful for a broader and deeper understanding of this practice, to (re)construct it from an ethical-political perspective, based on the dimension of the ethical listening of the care for the other: in this case, the user of health services.

Abstract: the psychologist in the public health sector deals with the challenge of fitting in non-psychiatric institutions characterized as one specific locus of professional practice of health. this study intends to understand the meanings attributed by the psychologists to their practice developed in the public health institutions in fortaleza. based on qualitative approach from a critical-interpretative perspective, the sample was composed by eight psychologists who are part of the public health team. the main technique employed was the non-directive individual interview that allowed to construct two different axis related to the objectives. the results point out many difficulties experienced by the informants that vary from a precarious academic graduation until the influence of the biomedical model in the assistance organization. in the services explored, the psychologist assumes attitudes of care as technique, adjustment, control and nullification of the difference. there are, however, experiences that go beyond the traditional models of education and practice.

Abstract: objective: to analyze the meanings of caring for people who seek assistance in mental health, from the perspective of psychologists engaged in their daily activities within public health services. methodological procedures: an exploratory qualitative study was conducted in the city of fortaleza, northeastern brazil, in 2006. the sample was composed of eight female informants, all of which were psychologists working in the state public health network. data was obtained by means of non-directive interviews which were taped and transcribed. categories were obtained from the discourses based on a hermeneutical approach by means of which an interpretive network was constructed. analisys of results: the interpretative network indicated that psychologists recognize their insertion in the field of public health as distinct from the professional field in which they obtained their training and, consequently, as a challenge. the predominant conceptions of care were circumscribed to the technical dimension, although other dimensions, closer to ethical concerns and to those related to respect for the "other" were also identified. conclusions: in the daily routine of assistance within the public health network, care is perceived as a technical attitude. it involves control and nullification of alterity, being more closely aligned to the traditional models of biomedicine and clinical psychology. however, other practices were observed that overcome this attitude. these emerging practices assume a new configuration, oriented towards affection, dialogue between professionals and those seeking assistance and an ethical commitment forged within a political and socio-cultural perspective.

Abstract: cowpea [vigna unguiculata (l.) walp.] is one of the most widely adapted grain legumes in hot regions of africa, asia and the americas. in the semiarid northeast of brazil, it is the main subsistence crop, an excellent protein source of low cost, for the poor population. the objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters to understand the inheritance of seed sizes in cowpea. the parents p1 and p2 and the generations, f1, f2, bc1 and bc2 of the cross tvx5058-09c x manteiguinha formed the genetic material for this study. these six generates (p1, p2, f1, f2, bc1 and bc) were evaluated in a completely randomized block-design with six replications, in teresina - pi, brazil, in 1998. the genetic parameters estimated were: phenotypic and total genetic variance, additive and dominance genetic components of variance and the variance attributed to the environment, heritability in the broad and narrow senses, average degree of dominance and the number of genes controlling the character. the additive - dominance model fitted the data for 100-seeds weight in as much as the midparental value and the additive effect were the more important genetic parameters for the determination of this character. the number of genes that control its expression is five. the occurrence of high values for narrow sense heritability indicates that the selection for seed size can be made in early generations.

Abstract: in the year 2 000 the brazilian population will be about 14 million old citizens and osteoporosis will affect 3 in 20 brazilian women. the prevention of osteoporosis consists of maximizing the peak of bone mass genetically determined (that occurs from 25 to 30 years old), maintaining this achieved bone mass throughout adulthood and losing the minimum in old ages. the aim of this study was the evaluation of the calcium intake by adolescents from the city of osasco (s?o paulo, brazil), looking forward to osteoporosis prevention. the food intake of 323 schoolchildren in the 5th and 8th grades from 8 schools located in the central and peripheral areas of the city was evaluated. the mean of the 3 alternate days dietary records was calculated. the mean daily intake of calcium and the calcium percentage from dairy foods were not significantly different for men and women. only 6.2% of the men and 2.8% of the women consumed above 1 200 mg/d of dietary calcium. there were significant differences in the energy and calcium intake and in the percentage of calcium from dairy foods and the mineral density of the diet in relation to the geographic areas. the mean calcium intake of the quarter of the population that showed the highest consumption (1 015 mg/d) did not meet the daily recommendation of 1200 mg. milk was the dairy food that most of the adolescents referred to, but the quantities differed according to gender; women took 190 ml/day and men 240 ml. the calcium intake of these adolescents was well below the present recommendations and so is the mineral density of their diets. it would be desirable an intake of, at least, 550 mgca/1 000 kcal to reach the daily recommendations. an effort should be made, by health professionals, to raise the intake of calcium-rich foods looking forward to the prevention of osteoporosis and its consequences.
