International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology , 2013, DOI: 10.7162/S1809-97772013000100016
Abstract: introduction: paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors that most commonly originate in the adrenal gland, a type that is called pheochromocytoma; however, 5-10% of paragangliomas are extra-adrenal and may arise in any area between the neck and pelvic region along the sympathetic nervous system. those located in the head and neck comprise 3% of extra-adrenal tumors, with the majority originating in the tympanic-jugular region and carotid body. objective: to present a rare case of nasal paraganglioma and review the literature. case report: the patient was submitted to medial subtotal maxillectomy, and her clinical findings, diagnostic data, and treatment outcome were recorded. conclusion: paragangliomas are considered benign tumors, but they occasionally display a malignant character. the most important finding in this case was the need for total resection of the tumor to avoid recurrence.

Abstract: fibrous dysplasia is a pseudo-neoplastic lesion, ethiology unknown, benign and recurrent, which normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue and lamelar bone trabeculae. the main differential diagnosis of the monostotic form on head and neck bones is ossifying fibroma which some consider another form of the same entity. the purpose of this study is to make a review of the main clinical, radiological and histopathological findings that contributes to the differential diagnosis. the recurrent behavior of fibrous dysplasia is essential to its surgical planning and it was also analyzed on this study. we have reported three cases followed at the ent department of irmandade da santa casa de misericórdia de s?o paulo evaluated based on the patients symptoms, physical exam, imaging findings and treatment. in all three cases, the diagnosis was confirmed based on histopathological findings. all of them had recurrences after surgical removal, diagnosed between first and eighth year of follow up. due to fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma similar clinical courses, the histopathological findings are essential to their differential diagnosis. the long term follow up of this pacients is necessary in order to make an early diagnosis of recurrences.

Corvo, Marco Antonio dos Anjos;Granato, Lídio;Ikeda, Felipe;Próspero, José Donato de;
International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology , 2013, DOI: 10.7162/S1809-97772013000200016
Abstract: introduction: extramedullary plasmacytoma is a plasma cell tumor that grows within any of the soft tissues of the organism. similar to all plasmacytic dyscrasia, the disease is extremely rare. aim: this study reports a case of an extramedullary plasmacytoma of the nasal cavity and provides a literature review on the topic. case report: a 51-year-old woman presented at our tertiary university hospital with a 6-month history of progressive nasal obstruction, predominantly to the right side, and self-limiting epistaxis. examination revealed a large pale-reddish tumor within the right nasal cavity. anatomopathological analysis showed features consistent with a plasmacytoma diagnosis, which was subsequently confirmed by immunohistochemical techniques. further assessment revealed the solitary nature of the condition, consistent with extramedullary plasmacytoma. radiotherapy was initiated, which led to partial regression of the symptoms. the tumor was surgically removed by using a mid-facial degloving approach. the patient evolved with a naso-oral fistula and underwent 3 corrective surgeries. no evidence of associated systemic disease was found after 5 years of follow-up. conclusions: this case report, which describes a rare tumor of the nasal cavity, is expected to improve the recognition and referral of this condition by ear, nose, and throat (ent) specialists for multidisciplinary management and long-term follow-up.

Revista Brasileira de Plantas Medicinais , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-05722009000400014
Abstract: quassia amara is a 3-6m tall bush which has been indiscriminately removed from forests for extraction of quassins from its stem. these substances have been used in pharmaceutical industry and as insecticide in organic agriculture. there is not much technical information about the growth of this species to subsidize sustainable management strategies. the aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of quassia amara under agroecological cultivation in costa rica. the study consisted in evaluating the development of q. amara individuals in permanent plots intercropped with other tree species. stem diameter at 10 cm from the ground and total height were measured. according to the results concerning growth rates, mean annual increment (mai) and current annual increment (cai), even at five years after planting, q. amara wood is not ready to be harvested.

Abstract: From the rise and fall of an hegemonic middle class to the defense policies of a dissolving middle class. The case of Chaco 1970-2000 Jorge Próspero Roze In the beginning of the seventies we witnessed in the province of Chaco, Argentina, a series of conflicts. These were the result of an attempt to defend the territorial hegemony made by a middle class of cotton producers teamed up in cooperatives. The Cooperatives became a provincial line of defense, fighting for the territory against the monopoly of industrial capital that came from outside the region. Five years later, a process of internationalization of the cotton market increased the gravity of a crisis in the agrarian middle class to the point of almost dissolving it by the end of the century. Once again, in January 2000, there seems to be unity in the fractions of the middle class of Chaco, brought together by a summoning of Small Companies. Our conclusion is that the political and ideological consequences of the process of globalization show that the space in which these fractions move renders the exertion of an hegemony impossible. Even if this becomes a mean for the defense of their own existence.
