Bragantia , 1982, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051982000100017
Abstract: the basic density of sunn hemp (crotalaria juncea) and kenaf (hibiscus cannabinus) stalks were determined by the maximum moisture content method and water displacement method. the density of the solid substance of sunn hemp and kenaf stalks was also determined. the results showed a direct relationship between diameter of the stalks and basic density. the density of the solid substance of sunn hemp and kenaf stalks was similar to the density of wood substance.
Sinais neurológicos sutis: uma revis?o

Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0047-20852010000300010
Abstract: this work aims to discuss the meaning of neurological soft signs and their relevance for research in psychiatry, with emphasis in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. a narrative review of the literature was performed based on the databases medline and bireme. neurological soft signs are abnormalities on the neurological exam affecting several functions, such as sensory integration, motor coordination, motor sequencing and presence of primitive reflexes. these signs indicate non-focal brain dysfunction and can be regarded as risk factors for psychiatric disorders. they can also suggest endophenotypes related with specific neural circuits, providing relevant information on the pathofisiology of these disorders. there are only a few studies on this subject in the brazilian literature. the observation of neurological soft signs points to the potential of the neurological exam to link the neurobiological knowledge and the clinical practice.

Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81082006000100009
Abstract: frontotemporal dementia is a major cause of dementia in the presenium. it is characterized by significant changes in behavior and personality, while cognitive functioning as assessed by traditional psychometric tests is relatively preserved. thus, many patients present to the psychiatrist because of the prominence of behavioral symptoms, such as apathy, disinhibition, perseverative or stereotyped behaviors. rational treatment for frontotemporal dementia is currently limited. the behavioral symptoms are controlled mainly with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Abstract: This work consists of a bibliometric and bibliographic research which investigated the results of the impact of children witnessing interparental violence. An electronic search was conducted in two different databases, BVS and Psyc Info, with the descriptors “conflito familiar” (family conflict) with “crian a” (child) and “domestic violence” with “child”, respectively. Only articles written from 2005 and 2010 were selected, taking into account the author, the journal, the methodology, and the main results. From the 211 articles collected, 15 were selected, highlighting country and journal with more publications (USA, 12; Canadian Psychology, Journal of Youth Adolescence and Journal of Family Psychology, two, respectively). The results suggested that the impact of this type of violence observed by children is evident in the course of their development, causing depressive symptoms and decrease of school performance. The need for new researches related to the issue is highlighted, for its production is still incipient.

Abstract: A complex and dynamic environment where impulsivity probably interferes in the human behavior is the sport context. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the possible relationship between impulsivity and technical performance in handball athletes. Eleven junior female athletes on a handball team were submitted to a neuropsychological assessment of impulsivity using Conner’s CPT-II and the Iowa Gambling Task. In 11 matches, participants’ handball performance was analyzed. We adopted the resampling statistical approach to correlate the measures of technical performance with the neuropsychological measures. IGT net score was posi- tively correlated with technical faults. Omission errors on the CPT-II were positively correlated with the number of fouls suffered, the number of fouls committed, and the number of offensive fouls. Commission errors on the CPT-II were negatively correlated with rebounds with defense ball possession. Our results support the idea of relationships between impulsivity and technical performance in specific match situations.

Abstract: nowadays, it is known that not only thermodynamics elements influence swine productivity, but also the interaction with the aerial environment along with the noise level must be taken into account. this research studied the acoustic environment inside a pig nursery housing using average noise level distribution maps as a function of ambient temperature and relative humidity. the structural environment was divided in 2 m2 cells. noise level, air dry bulb temperature and relative humidity were recorded at piglet height in the centre of each cell. the results were mapped and the resulting nursery noise level was found to be 12.49 db. however, a positive correlation between thermal environment and noise level was not found. from the results, it was possible to estimate the room noise level due to presence of piglets at around 12.49 db. the resulting noise level found was below the international limit for swine housing and in accordance to national standards for farm workers. the results indicate that the piglets that were recently transferred to that environment vocalized more than the ones already acquainted with the room (10.98 db), presenting a higher level of noise (12.58 db).

Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-43662008000600011
Abstract: this research had the objectives of evaluating the fermentation process of solid pig manure, performing the physical, chemical and microbiological characterization of organic fertilizers produced and identifying the ideal time of fermentation. solid pig manure, derived from mechanical separation, was arranged in heaps of 2.0 m3 with, and without, plastic covering. the heaps were turned every fifteen days and watered whenever necessary, with daily control of temperature. by the analysis of the characteristics of temperature, c:n ratio and ph, it was verified that the time of fermentation of 65 days was sufficient for maturation of the pig manure with appropriate chemical and physical characteristics. there was an increase in the concentration of nutrients, except for zinc, during the fermentation, which improved the quality of the pig manure. the period of 84 days of fermentation was sufficient to reduce the population of coliforms by 99.90% compared to the initial population. the presence of salmonella sp and listeria monocytogenes was not verified in any of the fermentation samples of pig manure.

Abstract: background: language deficits cause difficulties in the family, school and social settings, so early detection and intervention are crucial. in primary care, children undergo developmental screening using the tepsi test, which includes language at 4 years-old. objective: establish the frequency of language delay in children at pre-school, determined by specific language tests, in order to establish their concordance with tepsi test. method: children between 3 and 5 years-old, attending 2 low-income pre-school facilities from the north metropolitan area, were evaluated during 2006. the information was obtained in a blind and simultaneous mode through tepsi test performed by nurses and 3 specific language tests performed by speech therapists. a performance < p10 or < 2sd in one or was more language tests was considered a deficit. the concordance and discordance between both evaluations were established. results: from a total of 219 children, 194 (89%) completed the evaluation. 48% had a language deficit by speech evaluation and 13,9% by tepsi test. the concordance between both evaluations was poor (kappa 0,2), with a significant discordance (p < 0,0000) by mc nemar?s x2. conclusion: the frequency of language problems in this population is high; a poor concordance between the tests used in primary care and language evaluations performed by speech therapists was found. the differences could be caused by the different aspects of language being evaluated. the findings lead to reconsider the screening strategies used in primary care and to implement language stimulation programs directed to low-income populations at high risk for language deficits

Abstract: background: a classic amnestic syndrome is characterized by a significant impairment of the anterograde memory, a variable and transitory retrograde amnesia with preserved non-declarative memory. however, case reports of patients with disproportionate compromise of the retrograde memory have been described in the recent literature. objectives: to report a 26-year-old patient with a severe global retrograde amnesia with no evident triggering factor. methods: psychiatric interview and neuropsychological evaluation. results: his memory loss compromised all domains of his life, although he could acquire and retain new information. he also exhibited prominent deficits in production and comprehension of common words as well as in recognition and use of objects. discussion: the final diagnostic formulation of the present case is difficult possibly indicating a continuum between psychogenic and organic retrograde amnesia.
