An efficient self-microemulsifying vehicle for PLH was selected and optimized using solubility testing and phase diagram construction. The formulations were characterized by assessing self-emulsification performance, droplet size analysis, in vitro drug release characteristics and formulation stability studies. Optimized formulations for in vitro dissolution and bioavailability assessment were Triethylcitrate (TEC; 10%), Tween 20 (50%), Span 20 (25%), triethanolamine (5%), and benzyl alcohol (10%). The SMEDDS readily released the lipid phase to form a fine oil-in-water microemulsion with a narrow distribution size. Saturated solubilities of PLH from SMEDDS in water, pH 4.0 and 6.8, were over 150 times greater than that of plain PLH. The release of 100% PLH from SMEDDS was considerably greater compared to only 1.12% in simulated intestinal fluid (pH 6.8) from plain PLH after 2 hours. The PLH suspension with 0.5% sodium carboxymethylcellulose or 3% PLH-loaded SMEDDS was administrated at a dose of 40 mg/kg as PLH to fasted rats. The absorption of PLH from SMEDDS resulted in about a threefold increase in bioavailability compared with plain PLH aqueous suspension. Our studies illustrated that the potential use of the new SMEDDS can be used as a possible alternative to oral delivery of a poorly water-soluble drug such as PLH.

That is, MBGs may induce the rapid formation of hydroxy apatite (HA) in simulated body fluid (SBF), which is a major inorganic component of bone extracellular matrix (ECM) and comes with both good osteoconductivity and high affinity to adsorb proteins. Meanwhile, the high bioactivity of MBGs may lead to an abrupt initial local pH variation during the initial Ca ion-leaching from MBGs at the initial transplant stage, which may induce unexpected negative effects on using them in in vivo application. In this study we suggest a new way of using MBGs in bone tissue regeneration that can improve the strength and make up for the weakness of MBGs. We applied the outstanding bone-forming bioactivity of MBG to coat the main ECM components HA and collagen on the MBG-polycarplolactone (PCL) composite scaffolds for improving their function as bone scaffolds in tissue regeneration. This precoating process can also expect to reduce initial local pH variation of MBGs. Methods and materials: The MBG-PCL scaffolds were immersed in the mixed solution of the collagen and SBF at 37°C for 24 hours. The coating of ECM components on the MBG-PCL scaffolds and the effect of ECM coating on in vitro cell behaviors were confirmed. Results: The ECM components were fully coated on MBG-PCL scaffolds after immersing in SBF containing dilute collagen-I solution only for 24 hours due to the high bone-forming bioactivity of MBG. Both cell affinity and osteoconductivity of MBG-PCL scaffolds were dramatically enhanced by this precoating process. Conclusion: The precoating process of ECM components on MBG-PCL scaffold using a high bioactivity of MBG was not only effective in enhancing the functionality of scaffolds but also effective in eliminating the unexpected side effect. Abstract: The effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs) were studied on growth, total flavonoid, gibberellins (GA) and salicylic acid (SA) contents of Taraxacum officinale (dandelion), a widely used medicinal plant in Korea. All the four PGRs used; gibberellic acid (GA3), kinetin (Kn), salicylic acid (SA) and ethephon (2- chloroethylphosphonic acid) were applied at the rates of 0.5 and 1.0 mM. GA3 markedly enhanced fresh shoot weight, while 0.5 mM of kinetin application significantly enhanced dry root mass as compared to control. SA enhanced both shoot and root attributes, while ethephon decreased plant growth. Endogenous bioactive GA1 and GA4 content and SA content enhanced with the application of GA3, SA and kinetin, but declined with ethephon. The flavonoid content of dandelion significantly increased with SA treatment, but was not altered with the application of other PGRs. The current study demonstrated the favorable effect of GA3, kinetin and SA on growth, bioactive GAs, SA and flavonoid contents of dandelion. These investigations offered interesting information as PGRs were never tested for plant growth and development of dandelion. It also reports the presence of both early C-13 hydroxylation and non C-13 hydroxylation pathways of GA biosynthesis in dandelion for the first time.
Prevalence and Antifungal Susceptibility of Candida Species Isolated from Women Attending a Gynaecological Clinic in Kumasi, Ghana

Abstract: Candidal vulvovaginitis causes extreme discomfort and affects the well being of women. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Candida infections among women attending gynaecological clinic at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi and the antifungal susceptibility patterns of the Candida species isolated. A total of 186 high vaginal swabs (HVS) were collected from women suspected of having candidal vulvovaginitis between March and June 2009. Wet mount preparations in potassium hydroxide (KOH) and Gram-stained smears were performed directly on specimens. Cultures for Candida species were done using sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) (Oxoid, UK) at room temperature (25 - 28oC). Antifungal susceptibility of the Candida species to amphotericin B, fluconazole and itraconazole was assessed using the ATB FUNGUS 3 test kits (bioMerieux, Marcy-l’Etoile, France). Of the 186 HVS cultured, 39 yielded Candida species giving Candida prevalence in HVS during the study period as 21%. Candida species isolated from HVS specimens were Candida albicans (n=19, 48.7%), Candida glabrata (n=7, 17.9%), Candida tropicalis (n=4, 10.3%) and Candida dubliniensis (n=4, 10.3%). Other species isolated were Candida sake (n=2, 5.1%), Candida krusei (n=2, 5.1%) and Candida parapsilosis (n=1, 2.6%). Susceptibility of the isolates to antifungal agents ranged from 66.7% to 87.2% with MICs ranging from ≤ 0.125mg/l to 8mg/l. Amphotericin B was the best performing antifungal agents with sensitivity of 87.2%.
The link between poverty and malnutrition: A South African perspective

Abstract: In this article, a brief review of the nutritional problems in South Africa, as well as the intergenerational, vicious cycle of poverty and malnutrition, are used to argue for the necessity of including a nutrition intervention component in poverty alleviation programmes. It is concluded that this cycle can be broken by improving the nutritional status of women in their productive years, whereby foetalmalnutrition, arrested mental development and physical stunting in children, adolescents and adults can be prevented. The result will be an improvement in human capital, health and productivity with the ultimate aim of escaping poverty as suggested by the seven principles of Solomons(2005).

Abstract: It is the duty of the directors of a company to run the business of the company in the best interests of the company and its shareholders. In principle, the company, alone, is responsible for the debts incurred in the running of the company and the creditors are, in principle, precluded from looking to the directors or shareholders for payment of any shortfall arising as a result of the company\'s insolvency. This principle has, in a number of jurisdictions undergone statutory change such that in certain circumstances, the directors and others who were concerned with the management of the company may be made liable to contribute, personally, to meet the payment – in part or entirely – of the company\'s debts. This paper aims to explore this statutory jurisdiction. It also seeks to describe succinctly the process by which the shift from unlimited to limited liability trading was achieved. It will end by examining briefly a comparatively new phenomenon, namely that of a shift in the focus of the directors\' duties from company and shareholders to the creditors as the company becomes insolvent and nears the stage of a formal declaration of its insolvent status – the so-called \'zone of insolvency\'.
