Education, as one of the basis of personal and professional development, increasingly becomes the object of study in contemporary times. This is even more necessary when referring to a discipline such as sociology, still in its infancy in the school context. Then, it is important to understand the teaching practices that teachers use while conducting their jobs, as well as their working conditions as they perform their activities. Taking into consideration that the teacher is a plural and heterogeneous person, we think that other teachers, with other academic backgrounds, can teach the subject, because teacher training is not the only element that is able to guide everyday practices in the classroom, although not discarded in order to teach. This is because the habitus is built by the teaching practice experiences, the provisions acquired throughout professional career. The teachers’ knowhow, therefore, acquires a central role to think about the consolidation of a discipline that for years did not belong to the high school curriculum. Our objective therefore is to elucidate a debate on the construction of teaching habitus, and the importance of initial formation in Sociology teaching.

Piper aduncum L. (Piperaceae) has great potential for economic exploration because of the proven use of its essential oil in the agriculture and in the human health. A technique that improves its propagation, as the tissue culture, becomes necessary. Some parameters must be determined for the successful cultivation in vitro. Thus, this study aimed to determine the salts concentration of MS medium, temperature, luminosity and light quality for in vitro culture of this species. The following treatments were conducted: 1/4MS, 1/2MS, MS and 2MS; 20, 25, 30 and 35; monochromatic blue, red and white lights and the combination of red and blue, using light emitting diodes (LEDs); luminosities of 17, 37, 48 and 73 μmol·m-2·s-1 obtained with cool white fluorescent lamp. After 35 days, the treatments were analyzed. To determine the salts concentration of MS, the variables were evaluated: number of shoots, leaves and roots, length and width of leaves, length and dry mass of root and shoots and percentage of death by necrosis. To the plantlets under different temperatures, length and dry mass of shoot and root, number of shoots, number, length and width of leaves and survival and rooting percentages were measured. The plantlets that were maintained under different luminosities were evaluated for length of shoot and root, dry mass of leaf and root. To evaluate the growth under the LEDs, the length and dry mass of shoot and root, number of shoots and roots, percentage of rooting and sprouting were assessed. The medium 1/4MS and the medium 1/2MS showed better responses for number and length of root, leaf width and shoot length. The temperature 25 provided the highest number of leaves, length of shoot and root, root dry mass and rooting percentage. The luminosity 73 μmol·m-2·s-1 provided higher values in length of root and dry mass of leaf and root. The red LED provided plantlets with greater growth. Thus, for the in vitro cultivation of Piper aduncum, 1/4MS, environment temperature of 25, light intensity of 73

Abstract: Naphthoquinones isolated from the wood of trees of the families Bignoniaceae and Verbenaceae have been subjected to an interdisciplinary study since the seventies, when Dr. Benjamin Gilbert, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, launched a program on the chemistry of natural products active against endemic diseases. In this paper we describe the synthesis of five naphthoimidazoles, derived from this program and their activity towards T. cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. We also review the influence of chemical structure on trypanocidal action of naphthoquinones and of derived heterocycles with imidazole, oxazole, phenoxazine, indole, dipyrane and cyclopentene rings. The overall analysis corroborates the tendency of trypanocidal activity in compounds with an imidazole or oxazole ring linked to a naphthopyrane structure. Two naphthoimidazoles presented higher activities (14.5x and 34.8x) than the standard crystal violet. Emphasis is given to the biodiversity of the Brazilian flora as a starting point for the development of an autonomous and creative medicinal chemistry.
What’s in a Bot? L2 Lexical Development Mediated through ICALL  [PDF]

Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2014.41013

In recent years, the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has made great strides to refocus its attention on the essential role that vocabulary plays in becoming a proficient L2 learner (Nation, 2001). Moreover, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has made advances in providing interactive online tools that help L2 learners strategically engage and work through their vocabulary development. This present study reports on how an Intelligent CALL tool (ICALL), Langbot, helps learners at the beginner and intermediate levels with their lexical acquisition. Modeled after instant messaging systems, which create a synchronous communicative environment, Langbot acts like a pedagogical scaffold or online buddy that caters to the vocabulary needs of each individual learner. It provides 1) translation requests with examples in context, 2) a frequency-based “word of the day” and 3) quizzes based on recent inquiries and a specific frequency range according to the learner’s level. The results from breadth and depth tests (N = 142), suggest that learners at all levels that have access to Langbot significantly improve their vocabulary breadth, while only intermediate-high learners with access to Langbot improve their vocabulary depth. Furthermore, survey data demonstrate Langbot’s effectiveness and accessibility based on learner perceptions.

Abstract: As class status improves, engagement in civic and political activities increases. These activities are voting, volunteerism and vocal activism. However, depressed socio-economic status leaves many individuals disengaged from civic-political structures. Applying Attachment Theory, this article proposes there are five statuses of civic-political development to being an engaged citizen. These statuses correspond to fixed class categories and are 1) disengaged and detached; 2) insecure, responsive; 3) insecure, subscribing; 4) secure, subscribing; 5) secure and defining. The lower the quintile, the less engaged an individual is in the civic-political structures of society and attached to their community. Organizing communities is one way to engage individuals into the civic-political structures of their community in spite of their economic status.

Abstract: objective: investigate the prevalence of suspected cases of common mental disorders in a population assisted by one professional team of the brazilian family health program as well as to evaluate its associated factors. methods: a cross-sectional survey study was carried out using a randomized systematic sampling procedure for selecting 277 subjects from the target population. for data collection, two instruments were administered to the sample, the self report questionnaire (srq-20) as well as a sociodemographic questionnaire. results: the global prevalence of cases suspected of presenting common mental disorders in the target population was of 43.70%. females had a significantly higher prevalence rate (48.37%), when compared to males (34.41%). the variable "family income" had an inverse relation to the common mental disorders prevalence. the logistic regression analysis indicated that only two variables - "use of medication" and "family income" - were significantly associated to common mental disorders. conclusions: the results indicated a higher prevalence of common mental disorders in this target-population, compared to data from other similar studies, indicating the need for a special attention to be rendered by the primary health care system to detect and treat those cases in families attended by the brazilian family health program, specially those characterized by the associated factors detected.

Abstract: the vegetative propagation of medicinal species is in increasing agronomic interest because it is the starting point and a basic tool for any cultivation in commercial scale. the objective of this work was to determine the best shoot cutting length and the best substrate for vegetative propagation of ocimum selloi. cuttings were placed in greenhouse conditions under intermittent mist. two cutting sizes (10 and 20cm) and three substrate types (washed sand, carbonized rice hulls and commercial substrate plantmax?) were tested. the experiment was in blocks randomly distributed in four replications and five cuttings for parcel. after thirty five days the percentage of rooting, the length of the bigger root (cm) and the leaf and root dry weight (mg) were analysed. the results indicated that the vegetative propagation of ocimum selloi by cuttings is viable, once its mean rooting was over 70%. it was not observed significative interaction within the adopted treatments. the cuttings with 20cm length presented larger leaf and root dry weight but the percentage of rooting and the length of the bigger root was not affected by the cutting lenght. the substrate types did not present effect on the development of the cuttings. the production of ocimum selloi seedlings is recommended with 20cm length cuttings using any substrate tested.

Essential oils are odorous principles stored in special plant cells. The essential oil in the Hyptis genus is traditionally used as an anesthetic, antispasmodic, antiinflammatory, and can induce abortion in high doses. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the influence of seasons in essential oil content and chemical composition of species H. marrubioides. A completely randomized complete design was used with four treatments (winter, spring, summer and autumn) and six replications, totaling 60 plants. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation with a Clevenger apparatus. The qualitative analysis of the essential oil was performed by gas chromatography (GC/MS). In summer, plant leaves showed higher essential oil content. In the other seasons, essential oil content was similar. The majorcompounds in the essential oil were monoterpene α-thujone and β-thujone. The peak relative concentrations of β-thujone did not show considerable difference among the seasons. The oxygenate sesquiterpenoids (cedrol and caryophyllenol) and not oxygenate (α-copaene, α-caryophyllene, germacrene D and cadalene), were found in lower quantity in the essential oil; however, quantitative differences were observed over the seasons.
