Selenium Content in Blood of Donors from the North of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract: Selenium is an element which participates in antioxidant enzymes. A medium and long term lack of such element is associated, mainly, with heart disease, joint and bone structure problems and thyroid activity. Selenium contents in blood reflect its ingestion and food content variation. It depends on soil characteristics, such as pH and selenium presence. There are few studies concerning selenium levels in food and blood in Brazil. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine selenium content in a blood donor group in Rio de Janeiro state, conducted from December 2008 to March 2009. From the donated blood to Regional Blood Center of Campos dos Goytacazes, 4.0 mL were submitted to selenium analysis through atomic absorption spectrometry of hydride generation and organic matter oxidation wet basis with nitric and perchloric acid. Selenium content varied from 75 ± 16 ng·g-1 for females and 70 ± 21 ng·g-1 for males. There was no significant difference among selenium contents in blood from donors of different gender, age and residence. Seventy four percent of donors had selenium content in blood below 70 ng·mL-1, the lowest level for maximum selenoproteins production, according to the Nutritional Prevention Cancer.

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho foi mensurar o valor energético, a composi o centesimal e teores de sódio em queijos Minas frescal, Minas frescal “light” e ricota e avaliar a rotulagem nutricional com base na legisla o vigente. Amostras de queijo foram coletadas no comércio da cidade de Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ e os teores destes nutrientes foram determinados pelos métodos o ciais. A maioria dos queijos apresentava quantidade elevada de gordura e sódio. Nenhuma amostra de queijo com alega o “light” na embalagem atendeu a legisla o vigente. Além disso, a maioria das marcas analisadas apresentou teores de algum nutriente fora da varia o de 20% em rela o aos teores declarados no rótulo nutricional e 25% das amostras eram comercializadas sem a informa o nutricional obrigatória.

Abstract: Objetivo: avaliar a prevalência de transtornos mentais comuns entre a popula o de rua. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 245 moradores de rua em Belo Horizonte. Os transtornos mentais comuns e as categorias de sintomas foram avaliados pelo Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Resultados: 49,48% da popula o tem problemas mentais. Na distribui o dos sintomas há prevalência de depress o e ansiedade, seguida por sintomas somáticos, decréscimo de energia vital e pensamentos depressivos. Conclus o: A prevalência de transtornos mentais comuns encontradas em homens adultos que vivem nas ruas de Belo Horizonte pode ser o resultado da vulnerabilidade deste grupo social. Abstract Objective: To assess the prevalence of common mental disorders among the homeless population. Methods: Cross sectional study with 245 homeless men in Belo Horizonte. Common mental disorders and the categories of symptoms were evaluated by the Self- Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Results: 49.48% of the population has mental disorders. In the distribution of symptoms there is prevalence of depressed mood and anxiety, followed by somatic symptoms, decrease of vital energy and depressive thoughts. Conclusion: The prevalence of common mental disorders found in adult males living on the streets of Belo Horizonte can be the result of the vulnerability of this social group.

Abstract: Este estudio epidemiológico de carácter descriptivo, buscó conocer la prevalencia de consumo de alcohol entre la población en situación de calle. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó el AUDIT con 245 hombres en situación de calle en Belo Horizonte. Se verifica mayor frecuencia del uso nocivo y probable dependencia en adultos maduros y mayor frecuencia del estándar de riesgo para los que viven en situación de calle por período superior a 6 a os y entre los que duermen en la vía pública. Este estudio realza la importancia de construcción de políticas de salud orientadas a la población en situación de calle.

Abstract: this study investigates historical and comparative aspects of tapajúna (jê family) consonantal features, comparing cognates between tapajúna and suyá (also of the jê family) with the goal of specifying similarities and differences in an effort to describe the reconstruction of the macro-jê stock. the comparative method was applied to detect correspondences between the languages. data from tapajúna and suyá were compared to proto-jê data, as reconstructed by davis (1966). there are few differences between tapajúna and suyá. where there are variations in identical phonetic-phonological contexts, the question of speaker age arises, since, for example, pre-nasalized consonants occur in the speech of young people, whereas older tapajúna speakers use only nasalized consonants.
Mulheres hospitalizadas por abortamento em uma Maternidade Escola na Cidade do Recife, Brasil

Abstract: this cross-sectional study was performed with 160 women between 2005-2006. the objective was to describe the social-demographic and reproductive characteristics of women hospitalized due to abortions, and their knowledge about contraceptive methods and abortion induction. in order to determine the association between the abortion classification and social-demographic variables, pearson's chi-square test was used, with a significance level of 5%. a frequency of 56.3% was found for probably induced abortions. most cases of abortion occurred before 12 weeks (55.7%). as for the women's profiles: 48.9% were between 20-29 years old, 72.0% had eight years or more of schooling, 90.1% had a partner, 52.0% had 1-3 children, 100% knew about oral contraceptives and condoms and 80.0% had heard about misoprostol. the social-demographic and reproductive profile of women hospitalized at the referred service due to abortion did not change over the last years. misoprostol remains the most known method for abortion induction.

Abstract: objective. to determine the selenium content of foods consumed in brazil. methods. the project was carried out between 1993 and 1999. the food samples were collected in stores in several brazilian states. the levels of selenium were determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrophotometry and by wet oxidation. results. the highest levels of selenium were found in animal products, especially fish, and in wheat products. we found that plant products generally had selenium levels of less than 5.0 μg/100 g. conclusions. in brazil a diet rich in animal products, especially fish, is important in ensuring consumption of the recommended levels of selenium.
L-ascorbic acid, β-carotene and lycopene content in papaya fruits (Carica papaya) with or without physiological skin freckles

Abstract: the skin freckles is a papaya skin disorder that depreciates de fruit appearance and hampers its commercialization, although not lowering its nutritive value. being the papaya a good source of ascorbic acid, β-carotene and licopene this research aimed at determining l-ascorbic acid, β-carotene and licopene content in papaya fruits, from 'formosa' and 'solo' group varieties, with and without apparent physiological skin disease (skin freckles). fruits were harvested in the southeast region of brazil. l-ascorbic acid content was determined by titration technique. β-carotene and licopene contents were determined by high performance liquid chromatography technique (hplc). l-ascorbic acid content in papaya fruits ranged from (59.9 ± 3.4) mg 100 g-1 to (112.4 ± 12.6) mg 100 g-1 in fresh papaya pulp. β-carotene content ranged from (0.19 ± 0.07) mg 100 g-1 to (0.56 ± 0.09) mg 100 g-1 and that of licopene ranged from (1.44 ± 0.28) mg 100 g-1 to (3.39 ± 0.32) mg 100 g-1 in fresh papaya pulp. l-ascorbic acid contents of papaya fruits with skin disease averaged 7.0 mg 100 g-1 to 10.0 mg 100 g-1 higher than those of papaya fruits without skin freckles (p < 0.05).

Abstract: Este estudo faz considera es sobre a investiga o histórico-comparativa da língua tapajúna (Jê), mais especificamente sobre as consoantes em seu aspecto fonético-fonológico, comparando cognatos dessa língua e da língua suyá (também da família Jê) com o objetivo de verificar suas semelhan as e diferen as no contexto das consoantes, tendo em vista contribuir para a reconstru o do tronco linguístico Macro-Jê. Para o estudo aqui desenvolvido, foi utilizado o método comparativo por meio do qual s o verificadas as correspondências existentes entre as línguas envolvidas em um estudo dessa natureza, com o fim de observar como seria possivelmente constituída a forma original, que teria originado as formas das duas línguas. Os dados de tapajúna e de suyá também foram comparados aos dados do Proto-Jê, reconstruído por Davis (1966). De um modo geral, observa-se que há poucas diferen as entre tapajúna e suyá. No caso das varia es em contextos fonético-fonológicos idênticos, há a quest o da varia o de faixa etária, como a ocorrência das consoantes pré-nasalizadas na fala dos mais jovens do povo tapajúna, enquanto os mais velhos usam as nasais.

Abstract: Objetivo. Determinar os teores de selênio em alimentos consumidos no Brasil. Métodos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido de 1993 a 1999. As amostras de alimentos foram coletadas no comércio varejista em vários estados do Brasil. Os teores de selênio foram determinados por meio de espectrofotometria de absor o at mica, utilizando-se a técnica de gera o de hidretos, e oxida o da matéria organica por via úmida. Resultados. Os teores mais elevados de selênio foram encontrados nos produtos de origem animal, sobretudo nos pescados, e nos produtos derivados do trigo. Observou-se que os teores de selênio nos alimentos de origem vegetal foram, de modo geral, inferiores a 5,0 μg/100g. Conclus es. No Brasil, a presen a de pescados, principalmente, e de outros produtos de origem animal é importante na dieta para garantir o consumo dos teores recomendados de selênio.
