Delbem, Alberto Carlos Botazzo;Tiano, Gilberto Carlos;Alves, Karina Mirela Ribeiro Pinto;Cunha, Robson Frederico;
Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572006000400004
Abstract: objetives: the aim of this study was to verify the anticariogenic effect of acidulate solutions with low naf concentration, using ph-cycling model and bovine enamel. material and methods: enamel blocks were submitted to the surface microhardness (smh) test and randomly divided in 12 experimental and one placebo groups. the blocks were submitted to ph cycling for 7 days, with daily applications once/day of 0.05% naf and 0.1% naf and twice/day of 0.02% naf solutions. four different ph: 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 were used. next, smh test was again used to determine the surface microhardness percentage change (%smh). data obtained for %smh were homogeneous and passed through variance analyses and tukey's test (5%) as far as fluoride concentrations and ph. results:the results showed that ph influenced %smh in 0.02% naf and 0.05% naf solutions with ph 4.0, which had less mineral loss compared to ph 7.0 (p<0.05). the 0.02% naf - ph 4.0, and 0.05% naf - ph 7.0 groups showed similar results (p>0.05). a dose-response relationship was observed among the tested solutions, with better anticariogenic effect for the 0.1% naf solution. conclusion: the results suggest that the addition of citric acid to acidulate mouth rinses reduce mineral loss.

Pentecostalismo. Protestantismo. Tribos urbanas. Abstract: In Brazil, we witness the emergence of new religious alternatives almost daily, as well as a strong institutional fragmentation within the established Protestant churches. In this scenario, emerge autonomous churches with target specific audiences, offering symbolic products that match the needs of those audiences. For example, churches focused on "urban tribes" such as "Igreja Evangélica Bola de Neve" ("Snowball Church"), incorporated in 1999, on the Tatuapé neighborhood of S o Paulo, SP, Brazil. This article presents an anthropological analysis of "Snowball church", seeking to understand the structure of worship, the profile of members, and the kind of communication that is used in there. The research methodology was field work, targeted readings about neopentecostalism in Brazil, and interviews with church members. It also raises the possibility of this church and others focused on “urban tribes” be interpreted as a fourth wave of pentecostalism in Paul Freston`s wave theory, where a Theology of Autonomy prevails. Keywords: Snowball. Pentecostalism. Protestantism. Urban tribes.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762002000400021
Abstract: the present study was conducted to investigate a possible correlation between plasma (pvl) and seminal viral load (svl) on treatment-na?ve hiv-1-infected patients in vitória, es, brazil. we also evaluated whether the progressive immunosuppression associated with hiv disease (as evidenced by declining cd4 t cell counts) has any impact on the correlation between pvl and svl hiv-1. viral load on paired blood and semen samples from 56 consecutive treatment-na?ve patients were evaluated and compared to cd4 cell counts. viral load and t cell counts (cells/μl) were determined by nasba and by flow cytometry, respectively. overall, a strong positive correlation between pvl and svl (rho = 0.438, p = 0.001) was observed. however, when patients were grouped according to their cd4 counts, this correlation was only significant among patients with cd4 counts > 200 cells/μl. results presented here demonstrate the existence of a strong correlation between pvl and svl on patients with cd4 cell counts > 200 cells/μl, suggesting that this association may correlate with disease progression.

Abstract: tear film disorders in dogs can be classified into quantitative or qualitative abnormalities, or both, and are commonly observed in daily clinical practice. inadequate production of one or more tear film components can lead to variable degrees of ocular disorders, called keratoconjunctivitis sicca. keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs has several causes, but in most cases the disease is idiopathic, with t lymphocytes playing a role. in veterinary medicine, the diagnosis is made based on the results of the schirmer tear test. in this article, we review aspects related to the etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs and discuss new therapeutic modalities for this disease.

Abstract:
A method for adsorption involving banana peel (BP) was studied to remove the pollutant acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in aqueous medium. The results show that bioadsorbent has satisfactory maximum adsorption capacity (2.29 mg/g) for removing this analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug in aqueous solution (pH 7.0) using the Langmuir mathematical model. The tested concentrations of this pollutant were higher than the levels commonly found in the aquatic environment. This and other results suggest the BP as an alternative to ASA removal in water contaminated with pharmaceuticals pollutants.

Abstract: dry matter yield and chemical composition of forage grasses harvested from an area degraded by urban solid waste deposits were evaluated. a split-plot scheme in a randomized block design with four replicates was used, with five grasses in the plots and three harvests in the subplots. the mineral content and extraction and heavy metal concentration were evaluated in the second cut, using a randomized block design with five grasses and four replicates. the grasses were brachiaria decumbens cv. basilisk, brachiaria ruziziensis, brachiaria brizantha cv. marandu and cv. xaraés, and panicum maximum cv. tanzania, cut at 42 days of regrowth. the dry matter yield per cut reached 1,480 kg ha-1; the minimum crude protein content was 9.5% and the average neutral detergent fiber content was 62.3%. the dry matter yield of grasses was satisfactory, and may be an alternative for rehabilitating areas degraded by solid waste deposits. the concentration of heavy metals in the plants was below toxicity levels; the chemical composition was appropriate, except for phosphorus. the rehabilitated areas may therefore be used for grazing.

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982011001000008
Abstract: the coastcross-1 growth index in relation to five nitrogen doses (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha.year) and two regrowth ages (28 and 42 days) were evaluated. nitrogen doses were arranged in a 5 × 2 factorial scheme in a randomized complete block design with three repetitions. nitrogen fertilization was performed in three applications right after the forage harvesting. higher values for leaf/stem and leaf weight ratio were observed at 28-d regrowth, in comparison with the 42 days of regrowth. linear reduction of leaf/stem ratio from 1.6 to 1.0 at 0 and 133 kg n/ha.harvest, respectively was observed. the specific leaf area of bermudagrass at 28-d regrowth resulted in increased leaf area ratio (from 10.3 to 20.8 m2/kg with the increase of 0 to 133 kg n/ha. harvest). at the absence of n treatment, specific leaf rate was higher at 42-d (14.3 m2/kg) in relation to the 28-d of regrowth (8.6 m2/kg). regrowth age and nitrogen fertilization modify the pattern of forage accumulation and the characteristics of coastcross-1 pasture. during the summer, the coastcross-1 grass pasture fertilized with the highest n-dose should be managed at a younger regrowth age (28-d).

Abstract: context and objective: it is currently asserted that, in industrialized countries, nodular sclerosis is the most frequent type of hodgkin's lymphoma, in contrast to developing countries, where mixed cellularity and lymphocyte depletion are more frequently seen. the objective was to review histological data from cases of hodgkin's lymphoma from s?o paulo and campinas cities. design and setting: cross-sectional histopathological analysis, in four university hospitals and one cancer care center. methods: 1,025 cases diagnosed as hodgkin's lymphoma between 1990 and 2000 were collected from five institutions; 631 of them (61.5%) had been immunophenotyped using antibodies to cd20, cd3, cd15 and cd30. the relative frequencies of histological types (as informed by the contributing authors, who are hematopathologists in their institutions) were determined according to age and gender. results: the hodgkin's lymphoma types were distributed as follows: lymphocyte predominance 4.8%, nodular sclerosis 69.2%, mixed cellularity 21.1% and lymphocyte depletion 4.6%. conclusions: the controversy regarding the frequencies of hodgkin's lymphoma types within the brazilian setting seems to be due to the small number of cases in previous studies. the present data show a picture close to the situation in the industrialized countries.
