Abstract: some biopharmaceutical characteristics such as disolution and uniformity of the content of galenic forms of three active labile principles were evaluated, as well as their stability under conditions of thermal stress and relative humidity in the different containers used. to meet the need of specific pediatric or patient doses that are not available as commercial products, a common practice of the hospital is to make and fraction doses as galenic preparations. the pharmacy of “dr. gustavo fricke” hospital, in vi?a del mar, chile, recently decided to replace the paper containing a dose of medicine with hard gel capsules as the fractioning method. however, there is a lack of experimental basis allowing to establish if the product conserves its biopharmaceutical quality and stability in the pharmaceutical form and the final system of the package used. the results of this study validate the use of the making methodology used in terms of biopharmaceutical quality and stability extrapolated to room temperature. no statistical relation was found between the stability and the packaging systems used for distribution.

Biological Research , 2004,
Abstract: The expression of the acetyl xylan esterase II (axeII) gene from Penicillium purpurogenum is repressed by glucose and induced by xylan, as well as to a small degree by xylose and xylitol. This gene is expressed at neutral pH, but not under alkaline or acidic conditions, in agreement with previous findings for other xylanolytic genes of this organism. This is the first report showing pH regulation of an axe gene.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Hiperplasia Epithelial Focal (HEF) in indigenas populations of the tribes Sanema and Yekuana of the Bolivar Sta

Abstract: Purpose: Identifying the source of stone formation in recurrent stone formers has always been a big problem. Material and Methods: In this study kidney stones from 52 patients were submitted to direct examination by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) after manual fracture and 27 calculi were cultured in Eagle’s Minimum Essential Medium (E-MEM) and Brain-Heart Infusion (BHI) for eight weeks at 37°C in 5% CO2 atmosphere. Twenty-seven powdered and demineralized stones were suspended in sterile PBS, filtered through 0.22 m-pore-size sterile filters Millex (Millipore, Massachusetts, USA) and submitted to DNA extraction (Quiagen-Brazil). Platinum PCR SuperMIX (GIBCO-BRL), primers (Invitrogen), and Ultra Pure Water (Advanced Biotechnologies, Columbia, MD) were used for PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), which was generally conducted for 30 or 35 cycles with annealing of primers for 40 sec at 55°C and extension for 1 min at 72°C. Results: In 36 out 52 (69%) kidney stones it was detected the presence of biofilm coating the mineral surface of the stone when examined by SEM, consisting of coccoid particles, isolated or clustered, with diameter of 500 nm or less. Eleven out 27 (41%) kidney stone cultures produced white-colored sediment on the bottom of the tubes after eight-week incubation, revealing tiny structures similar to those observed directly by SEM. These structures were similar in size and morphology to spherical apatite particles previously observed in human kidney stones and named as nanobacteria (NB). No PCR products were observed in the samples. Conclusion: We found a strong correlation between renal stones and calcifying nanoparticles (CNP) in this study and these results open a new insight on this area to explore the etiology of stone formation. Whether NB/CNP are truly microorganisms or self-propagating mineral compounds is still controversial and its contribution, if any, in apatite nucleation and crystal growth remains uncertain.

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to assess the current knowledge and recommendations of obstetricians and dentists as to the dental care to pregnant patients in the cities of londrina/pr and bauru/sp, brazil. questionnaires were distributed to professionals of both cities, arguing on the following issues: oral health during pregnancy; contact between prenatal care and dental care providers; prenatal fluoride supplementation; selection of therapeutic agents for local anesthesia, pain control and treatment of infection; and dental procedures that can be performed during each trimester. data were analyzed by frequency of responses and statistical analyses were carried out using x2 (type of workplace/service) and t test (time since graduation), significant if p<0.05. seventy-nine obstetricians and 37 dentists responded the questionnaires. most physicians referred the patient to dental care only when a source of dental problem was mentioned, limiting the adoption of a preventive approach. forty-three percent of dentists and 34% of obstetricians did not know the potential contribution of periodontal infection as a risk factor for preterm low birth-weight babies. there was divergence from scientific literature as to the recommendation of local anesthetics (dentists and obstetricians), prenatal fluoride supplementation (obstetricians) and dental radiographs (dentists). the findings of this survey with dentists and obstetricians showed that dental management during pregnancy still presents some deviations from scientific literature recommendations, indicating the need to update these health care professionals in order to establish guidelines for prenatal dental care.
