Abstract: objectives: 1) to assess the changes in body weight and body mass index in grade 2 and 3 obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, pre and postoperatively; 2) to assess the changes in pre and postoperative fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, glycated hemoglobin and insulin. methods: a prospective study was undertaken with 40 selected patients with grade 2 and 3 obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, all with indication for surgical treatment of obesity. all patients underwent roux-en-y gastric bypass without ring. the clinical parameters weight and body mass index were analyzed, as well as the laboratory parameters fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and insulin. the analyses were carried out in the preoperative period and at 60 days postoperatively. statistical analysis was conducted with student's t and the kolmogorov-smirnov tests. results: mean preoperative weight was 107.3 kg, declining to 89.5 kg postoperatively. mean initial body mass index was 39.5 kg/m2, and 32.9 kg/m2 at 60 postoperative days. preoperative fasting blood glucose was 132 mg/dl, which was reduced to 40.4 mg/dl, on average, postoperatively. postprandial blood glucose was 172 mg/dl in the preoperative period and 111.6 mg/dl in the postoperative measurement. initial glycated hemoglobin was 7%, declining to 5.7% postoperatively. preoperative and postoperative insulin levels were 29.6 μiu/ml and 13.9 μiu/ml, respectively. the level of significance was p<0.001 for all variables. conclusion: there was a statistically significant reduction in body weight and body mass index between the pre and postoperative periods, as well as in fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, glycated hemoglobin.
Relevance of Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory Cues in Pet Dogs’ Awareness of Humans  [PDF]

Abstract: Many studies have looked at how dogs respond to human communicative information. Here, we examined which human communicative factors were important in influencing dogs’ responses. Eleven healthy pet dogs with no apparent aggressive behaviour toward people were recruited. Five sensory conditions (all cues presented; either a visual, an auditory, or an olfactory cue presented; no cues presented) were provided three times randomly to each dog during the tests. All tests were video recorded, and both the dogs’ behaviour and time taken to reach the person when she presented each of the sensory cue conditions were observed. Total rates of reaching the person were as follows: 97.0% (all cues), 87.9% (auditory cues), 84.4% (visual cues), 84.4% (olfactory cues), and 69.7% (no cues). The time taken for the dog to notice the person in the box and then obtain a reward from her differed among the five conditions: all cues (6.00 ± 0.32 s) and visual cues (6.02 ± 0.91 s) were significantly faster than auditory cues (18.56 ± 9.57 s) and no cues (26.55 ± 11.72 s). Thus the type of information input was important in recognition of the person by the dogs and influenced the dogs’ response times; visual cues appeared advantageous in confirming the person’s presence.

The infinite base change lifting associated to an APF extension of a $p$-adic field
Megumi Takata
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: In this paper, the author proved that the base change lifting associated to a totally ramified extension of a non-archimedean local field coincides with a map coming from the close fields theory of Kazhdan under some conditions. As a corollary, we can construct a base change lifting for an APF extension of a mixed characteristic local field.
Deligne's conjecture on the Lefschetz trace formula for $p^n$-torsion étale cohomology
Megumi Takata
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: Deligne's conjecture is the Lefschetz trace formula for correspondences defined over a finite field. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement of Deligne's conjecture with respect to $p^n$-torsion \'etale cohomology under certain conditions, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field.
The symplectic geometry of the Gel'fand-Cetlin-Molev basis for representations of Sp(2n,C)
Megumi Harada
Mathematics , 2004,
Abstract: Gel'fand and Cetlin constructed in the 1950s a canonical basis for a finite-dimensional representation V(\lambda) of U(n,\C) by successive decompositions of the representation by a chain of subgroups. Guillemin and Sternberg constructed in the 1980s the Gel'fand-Cetlin integrable system on the coadjoint orbits of U(n,\C), which is the symplectic geometric version, via geometric quantization, of the Gel'fand-Cetlin construction. (Much the same construction works for representations of SO(n,\R).) A. Molev in 1999 found a Gel'fand-Cetlin-type basis for representations of the symplectic group, using essentially new ideas. An important new role is played by the Yangian Y(2), an infinite-dimensional Hopf algebra, and a subalgebra of Y(2) called the twisted Yangian Y^{-}(2). In this paper we use deformation theory to give the analogous symplectic-geometric results for the case of U(n,\H), i.e. we construct a completely integrable system on the coadjoint orbits of U(n,\H). We call this the Gel'fand-Cetlin-Molev integrable system.
Recognizing Referential Links: An Information Extraction Perspective
Megumi Kameyama
Computer Science , 1997,
Abstract: We present an efficient and robust reference resolution algorithm in an end-to-end state-of-the-art information extraction system, which must work with a considerably impoverished syntactic analysis of the input sentences. Considering this disadvantage, the basic setup to collect, filter, then order by salience does remarkably well with third-person pronouns, but needs more semantic and discourse information to improve the treatments of other expression types.
Intrasentential Centering: A Case Study
Megumi Kameyama
Computer Science , 1997,
Abstract: One of the necessary extensions to the centering model is a mechanism to handle pronouns with intrasentential antecedents. Existing centering models deal only with discourses consisting of simple sentences. It leaves unclear how to delimit center-updating utterance units and how to process complex utterances consisting of multiple clauses. In this paper, I will explore the extent to which a straightforward extension of an existing intersentential centering model contributes to this effect. I will motivate an approach that breaks a complex sentence into a hierarchy of center-updating units and proposes the preferred interpretation of a pronoun in its local context arbitrarily deep in the given sentence structure. This approach will be substantiated with examples from naturally occurring written discourses.
Stressed and Unstressed Pronouns: Complementary Preferences
Megumi Kameyama
Computer Science , 1997,
Abstract: I present a unified account of interpretation preferences of stressed and unstressed pronouns in discourse. The central intuition is the Complementary Preference Hypothesis that predicts the interpretation preference of a stressed pronoun from that of an unstressed pronoun in the same discourse position. The base preference must be computed in a total pragmatics module including commonsense preferences. The focus constraint in Rooth's theory of semantic focus is interpreted to be the salient subset of the domain in the local attentional state in the discourse context independently motivated for other purposes in Centering Theory.
Indefeasible Semantics and Defeasible Pragmatics
Megumi Kameyama
Computer Science , 1995,
Abstract: An account of utterance interpretation in discourse needs to face the issue of how the discourse context controls the space of interacting preferences. Assuming a discourse processing architecture that distinguishes the grammar and pragmatics subsystems in terms of monotonic and nonmonotonic inferences, I will discuss how independently motivated default preferences interact in the interpretation of intersentential pronominal anaphora. In the framework of a general discourse processing model that integrates both the grammar and pragmatics subsystems, I will propose a fine structure of the preferential interpretation in pragmatics in terms of defeasible rule interactions. The pronoun interpretation preferences that serve as the empirical ground draw from the survey data specifically obtained for the present purpose.
