Climate Change and China as a Global Emerging Regulatory Sea Power in the Arctic Ocean: Is China a Threat for Arctic Ocean Security?  [PDF]

Abstract: The impact of climate change in the Arctic Ocean such as ice melting and ice retreat facilitates natural resources extraction. Arctic fossil fuel becomes the drivers of geopolitical changes in the Arctic Ocean. Climate change facilitates natural resource extractions and increases competition between states and can result in tensions, even military ones. This article investigates through a political and legal analysis the role of China as an emerging regulatory sea power in the Arctic Ocean given its assertive “energy hungry country behaviour” in the Arctic Ocean. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Arctic Council (AC) are taken into consideration under climate change effects, to assess how global legal frameworks and institutions can deal with China’s strategy in the Arctic Ocean. China’s is moving away from its role as “humble power” to one of “informal imperialistic” resulting in substantial impact on the Arctic and Antartic dynamism. Due to ice-melting, an easy access to natural resources, China’s Arctic strategy in the Arctic Ocean has reinforced its military martitime strategy and has profoundly changed its maritime military doctrine shifting from regional to global in the context of UNCLOS. In particular, it is wondered, what China understands about the public order dimension of UNCLOS. The article concludes that despite China’ assertive behaviour towards the Arctic environmental ocean and its rise as global sea power, for the time being, China cannot be considered as a variable for Arctic security as there are no sufficient legal and policy objective elements to adduct that it constitutes a threat to Artic ocean security.
Photocatalytic Degradation of p-Nitrophenol (PNP) in Aqueous Suspension of TiO2  [PDF]

Abstract: The effects of initial concentrations of PNP, doses of TiO2, cations and anions have been investigated to find out the conditions for the maximum degradation of PNP in presence of 254 nm UV light. The rate of photocatalytic degradation of PNP was increased with increasing TiO2 dose until the dose concentration reached at a value 0.4 g/100 mL. Further increase of TiO2 decreased the degradation. The maximum degradation of PNP was found with the catalyst dose 0.4 g/100 mL at pH 3. The degradation of PNP was decreased with increasing of PNP concentration. About 90% degradation of PNP was observed when 1.0 × 10﹣4 M PNP was irradiated for 2 hours in 0.4 g/100 mL of TiO2 suspension. The effect of Cu(II) and Fe(II) ions on the degradation was also investigated. Addition of Cu(II) ions enhances the percent degradation but excess of Cu(II) ions decreases the degradation. Under the same experimental conditions, the presence of \"\" and \"\" is found to be detrimental to the photodegradation of PNP. Hydrogen ion concentration of reaction mixture was found to increase continuously during photodegradation suggesting mineralization of PNP.
Development and Performance Study of Controlled Atmosphere for Fresh Tomato  [PDF]

Abstract: Development of a controlled atmosphere (CA) plant and shelf-life of fresh tomatoes at different storage conditions were studied in this research. The controlled chamber (4.5' × 4.5' × 4.5') with supplement of 1% L-ascorbic acid as antioxidant source was constructed using locally available materials. Fresh tomatoes were kept with wrapping by low density polyethylene under refrigerated and CA storage conditions. The maximum shelf-life of fresh tomato was 42 days under CA condition and followed by 35 days in refrigeration condition. Though initial cost of controlled atmosphere was high but it resulted in maximum shelf life of tomato. However, CA condition retained the physiological changes namely, color change, TSS, and weight loss of fresh tomatoes than that of stored in refrigerated condition. From nutritional point of view, it was concluded that developed CA plant could be used to extend the shelf-life of fresh tomatoes with minimum physico-chemical changes throughout the storage period.
Exclusive Breastfeeding among Preterm Low Birth Weight Infants at One Month Follow-up after Hospital Discharge

Abstract: Background: Establishment and maintenance of breastfeeding in preterm low birth weight (PT LBW) neonates after discharge from hospital is challenging and may be affected by multiple factors. We designed this study to find out the association of these factors with breastfeeding in our population. Objectives: To observe the rate of exclusive breasrfeeding (EBF) among the PT LBW neonates at one month follow up and to identify the factors that are related with the maintenance of EBF. Materials and Methods: This observational study was conducted during the period from July 2009 to October 2011 in Enam Medical College Hospital (EMCH). Preterm infants ≤ 34 wks gestation, stayed in the NICU for >3 days and discharged home were eligible. Mothers were interviewed at one month follow-up after discharge. Infants who were given only breast milk up to 4 weeks were termed as “Exclusively breastfed (EBF)” and who were given formula milk in addition were labeled as “Nonexclusively breastfed (NEBF)”. Baseline information regarding maternal demography, delivery of the baby, feeding during discharge was taken from database of neonatal ward. Results: Among 89 infants, 37 (42%) were female and 52 (58%) were male, including 5 twins. Gestational age ranged from 29 to 34 weeks (mean 32±2), and birth weight ranged from 1100 to 2200 grams (mean 1763±20 g). At one month follow up visit 19% (17/89) were found to be NEBF and 81% were EBF. Factors significantly associated with EBF were shorter duration of hospital stay (p=0.001), method of feeding at discharge (p=0.001), mode of delivery (p=0.004), below average socio-economic status (p=0.03), maternal education (p=0.02), number of antenatal visits (p=0.02) and larger birth weight (p=0.038). Conclusion: A variety of factors may affect EBF in PT LBW babies. Extensive counseling of the mothers during antenatal visits, counseling of the family members regarding the advantages of exclusive breastfeeding is necessary. Support should be provided for the mothers both in the hospital and also outside the hospital for a long period.

Abstract: The ZnAlxFe2-xO4 (x = 0.0, 0.2 and 0.4) spinel ferrites were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction in air at 1350°C. The X-ray diffraction of all the three samples showed sharp Bragg peaks indicating the formation of a single phase spinel structure. The lattice parameters of the samples were determined from the X-ray diffraction data using the Nelson-Riley extrapolation method. The lattice parameters, cation distribution and oxygen position parameters have also been determined by refining the data by the Rietveld method. Rietveld refinement of the XRD data reveals all the samples to possess cubic symmetry corresponding to the space group Fd3m. Lattice parameters were found to decrease with increasing Al concentration, i.e. 8.4322, 8.4002, and 8.3984 Å for x = 0.0, 0.2 and 0.4, respectively.
Outcomes of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy with or without Nephrostomy Tube: A Comparative Study  [PDF]

Abstract: Objectives: To compare the outcomes of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) with or without nephrostomy tube. Materials & Methods: This prospective comparative study intended to compare the outcomes between PCNL without nephrostomy tube and PCNL with nephrostomy tube. A total of 50 cases of renal stone disease planned for PCNL in Dhaka Medical College Hospital from July 2015 to June 2017, were included in this study according to the statistical calculation. Cases were randomly allocated to group A (PCNL without nephrostomy tube) and group B (PCNL with nephrostomy tube). Each group consisted of 25 patients. The outcome variables were post operative pain, requirement of analgesic, leakage of urine and post operative hospital stay. Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Results: No significant differences were found regarding age (p = 0.95), sex (p = 0.55) and operation time (p = 0.36) between two groups. Post operative pain (p < 0.0007) and analgesic requirement (p < 0.0001) were less in group A than group B cases. Leakage of urine is higher in group B in comparison to group A (p < 0.0001). Post operative hospital stay is shorter in group A than group B cases which is statistically significant (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy without nephrostomy tube is better than percutaneous nephrolithotomy with nephrostomy tube in selective cases. It significantly reduces post operativepain, analgesic requirement and postoperative hospital stay. So percutaneous nephrolithotomy without nephrostomy tube is safe and effective.
Stochastic Frontier Approach and Data Envelopment Analysis to Total Factor Productivity and Efficiency Measurement of Bangladeshi Rice

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to apply the Translog Stochastic Frontier production model (SFA) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to estimate efficiencies over time and the Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth rate for Bangladeshi rice crops (Aus, Aman and Boro) throughout the most recent data available comprising the period 1989–2008. Results indicate that technical efficiency was observed as higher for Boro among the three types of rice, but the overall technical efficiency of rice production was found around 50%. Although positive changes exist in TFP for the sample analyzed, the average growth rate of TFP for rice production was estimated at almost the same levels for both Translog SFA with half normal distribution and DEA. Estimated TFP from SFA is forecasted with ARIMA (2, 0, 0) model. ARIMA (1, 0, 0) model is used to forecast TFP of Aman from DEA estimation.
A Progressive Image Transmission Method Based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT)

Abstract: In this paper, a wavelet-based progressive image transmission (PIT) scheme is proposed. Here a combined method is proposed to reduce the image browsing time. The proposed scheme transforms a digital image from spatial domain into frequency domain by using discrete wavelet transformation. For wavelet transformation phase we have used Haar wavelet transformation. But it is computationally rigorous. Using concurrent computing we have significantly reduced computation time overhead as well as transmission time. According to the experimental results, the proposed scheme provides the accuracy of reconstructed image and the image browsing time reduces significantly.
