P-T PHASE DIAGRAM AND GOLD VALENCE STATE OF NEW GOLD MIXED-VALENCE COMPLEXES, Cs2[AuIX2][AuIIIY4](X, Y = Cl, Br, I; X 1 Y)

Abstract: Cs2[AuIX2][AuIIIX4](X = Cl, Br, and I) is well known for the perovskite-type gold mixed-valence system. This system undergoes pressure-induced and photo-induced Au valence transition from the mixed valence state of AuI,III to the single valence state of AuII. Recently, we have succeeded in synthesizing new gold mixed-valence complexes having perovskite-type structure, Cs2[AuIX2][AuIIIY4](X, Y = halogen, X 1 Y), in organic solvent by using a new method. This hetero-halogen bridged gold mixed-valence system was confirmed by means of Raman spectroscopy. From the analysis of 197Au M ssbauer spectra, it was elucidated that the charge transfer interaction between AuI(5dx2-y2) and AuIII(5dx2-y2)in the a-b plane becomes dominant for the AuI-AuIII interaction in Cs2[AuIX2][AuIIIY4] (X, Y = Cl, Br, and I) in the order of X = Cl < Br < I, where Y is fixed. In order to elucidate the Au valence transition for Cs2[AuIX2][AuIIIY4], we have investigated the X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra under high pressure. Moreover, we have synthesized TlAuX3(X = Cl and Br) having cubic perovskite structure and highly conducting behavior. The Au valence state in TlAuX3 is considered to be AuII at ambient pressure.
Procalcitonin level as a marker of severe sepsis and septic shock patients who required polymyxin-B immobilized fiber with direct hemoperfusion

Abstract: We evaluated the levels of procalcitonin (PCT) and markers of sepsis (IL-6, IL-8, IL-1ra and PAI-1) in 159 patients who had severe sepsis and septic shock. Before starting the polymyxin-B immobilized fiber with direct hemoperfusion (PMX-DHP) treatment, patients were divided into three groups according to their PCT levels (L group: 0.5 10.0 ng/ml).Sixty-two percent of the patients showed high PCT levels (>10.0 ng/ml). The APACHE II score and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score tended to be high in the H group, but there was no significant difference among the groups. The survival rate declined with high PCT levels. The levels of inflammatory (IL-6 and IL-8) and anti-inflammatory (IL-1ra) cytokines tended to be high in the H group, but there was no statistically significant difference among the groups. On the other hand, the PAI-1 level was significantly increased in the H group (498 ± 499 ng/ml) compared with the L group (157 ± 103 ng/ml) and M group (311 ± 319 ng/ml).Sixty-two per cent of patients who required PMX-DHP treatment had high PCT levels. PCT might be a mediator of sepsis and sepsis markers. PCT can potentially affect sepsis-related markers.
Toroidal Lie algebras and Bogoyavlensky's 2+1-dimensional equation

Abstract: We introduce an extension of the \ell-reduced KP hierarchy, which we call the \ell-Bogoyavlensky hierarchy. Bogoyavlensky's 2+1-dimensional extension of the KdV equation is the lowest equation of the hierarchy in case of \ell=2. We present a group-theoretic characterization of this hierarchy on the basis of the 2-toroidal Lie algebra sl_\ell^{tor}. This reproduces essentially the same Hirota bilinear equations as those recently introduced by Billig and Iohara et al. We can further derive these Hirota bilinear equation from a Lax formalism of the hierarchy.This Lax formalism also enables us to construct a family of special solutions that generalize the breaking soliton solutions of Bogoyavlensky. These solutions contain the N-soliton solutions, which are usually constructed by use of vertex operators.

Abstract:

Electrically-induced bending of Selemion IPMC is caused by the charge induced into the IPMC. This induced charge quantity is susceptible to the absolute humidity of environment. There are two types of charges, the charge causing bending and the rest of charge that causes no bending. In the high humidity environments, where absolute humidity is above 10 gm-3, the quantity of charge causing no bending accounts for the large part of whole charge induced into the Selemion IPMC, while quantity of such charge is negligibly small at the absolute humidity of less than 10 gm-3. Estimating the quantity of those two types of charges individually, we successively analyzed the bending stability of Selemion IPMC at the absolute humidity above 10 gm-3. Consequently, we deduced the following conclusions. 1) There exists a large time delay in the current in response to the voltage input, 2) Current is highly dumping, and 3) Bending behavior is marginally stable under the input of any frequency.

Changes in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock

Abstract: Hemoperfusion using polymyxin B fixed fiber was performed by inserting a double-lumen catheter into the femoral or subclavian vein, at a blood flow rate of 80–100 ml/min. Determinations of PAI-1 and various cytokines including interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) were performed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) just before the initiation, just after the completion, and 24 hours after the completion of PMX-DHP.The number of patients was 12 in the normal level endotoxin group (Group N) and 15 in the high level endotoxin group (Group H). No significant difference was found in age. Regarding sex difference, females were dominant in Group N, while males were dominant in Group H. For other items including the number of pertinent items, septic severity score, APACHE-II score and MOF score, Group H had higher values in general. Most of the patients the underlying disease was sepsis caused by abdominal infection. Concerning the outcome after 4 weeks, nine (75%) out of 12 patients in Group N survived and 11 (73%) out of 15 patients survived in Group H, without significant difference.PAI-1 before the initiation of PMX-DHP was 416 ± 500 ng/ml in Group H, while that in Group N was 172 ± 141 ng/ml, showing a 2.4-fold higher tendency in Group H than in Group N. However, the correlation between PAI-1 and endotoxin level before the initiation, just after completion, and 24 hours after completion of PMX-DHP was not significant. PAI-1 level just after completion of PMX-DHP was 104 ± 12 and 362 ± 559 ng/ml in Group N and Group H, respectively, showing a decreasing tendency and a greater decrease in Group H after 24 hours.At any period before the initiation, just after completion, and 24 hours after the completion of PMX-DHP, a significant positive correlation was found between PAI-1 and IL-6, indicating the possible role of IL-6 in controlling the kinetics of PAI-1. Abstract: We construct a gauge theory based on general nonlinear Lie algebras. The generic form of `dilaton' gravity is derived from nonlinear Poincar{\' e} algebra, which exhibits a gauge-theoretical origin of the non-geometric scalar field in two-dimensional gravitation theory.
New sepsis-related marker: endotoxin activity assay

Abstract: The EAA was studied in a cohort of 153 septic patients admitted to the ICU. At the same time, IL-6 (chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT, chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1, latex photometric immunoassay) were measured within 24 hours after ICU admission. The patients were divided into the following three groups: L group: EAA < 0.4, M group: 0.4 ≤ EAA < 0.6, H group: 0.6 ≤ EAA. Nonrepeated-measures ANOVA was used to compare over three groups or conditions. Statistical significance was assumed for values of P < 0.05. Normally distributed data are presented as mean ± SD, and abnormally distributed data are presented as median values.Of the 153 patients, the L group contained 61 patients, M group 41 patients, and H group 51 patients, respectively. On the day of ICU admission, the rate of EAA ≥0.4 was 60.1% (MEDIC study: 57.2%). APACHE score in the L group was 21.0 ± 7.9, M group 24.8 ± 8.4, H group 26.4 ± 8.9, and SOFA score in the L group was 8.2 ± 4.3, M group 8.9 ± 4.1, H group 9.5 ± 4.3, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference among the groups. The median value of PCT in the L group was 1.1 ng/ml, M group 5.9 ng/ml, H group 8.5 ng/ml, respectively. PCT values of the M and H groups were significantly higher than those of the L group. Median IL-6 level of the H group was significantly higher than that of the L group (H group: 2,635 pg/ml, L group: 177 pg/ml).EAA has no significant correlation with other sepsis-related markers, but may be associated with body insults (inflammation or infection).

Abstract: A generalized two-center cluster model (GTCM), including various partitions of the valence nucleons around two alpha-cores, is proposed for studies on the exotic cluster structures of Be isotopes. This model is applied to the 10Be = alpha + alpha + n + n system and the adiabatic energy surfaces for alpha-alpha distances are calculated. It is found that this model naturally describes the formation of the molecular orbitals as well as that of asymptotic cluster states dependeing on their relative distance. In the negative-parity state, a new type of the alpha + 6He cluster structure is also predicted.
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy as Guidance for Lateral Neck Dissection in Patients with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: The surgical management of lateral lymph nodes in differentiated thyroid carcinoma is controversies. Therefore, we analyzed whether sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) biopsy of the first draining nodes in the jugulo-carotid chain is an accurate technique to select patients with true-positive but nonpalpable lymph nodes for selective lateral node dissection. Materials and Methods: From January 2009 to December 2009, 12 patients with solitary papillary carcinoma measuring 2 cm by ultrasonography were included in this study. After the thyroid gland was exposed to avoid injuring the lateral thyroid lymphatic connection, approximately 0.2 ml of 5mg/ml indocyanine green was injected into the parenchyma of upper and lower thyroid gland. Some stained lymph nodes in the jugulo-carotid chain could be identified following the stained lymphatic duct and dissected as the SLN. After that, thyroidectomy with modified neck dissection was performed. Results: The mean tumor size was 22.1 ± 4.6 mm. Identification and biopsy of stained SLN in the ipsilateral jugulo-carotid chain was successful in all 12 cases. In 6 cases, histopathological analysis of SLNs revealed metastases of the papillary thyroid carcinoma. Among them, 2 cases had additional metastatic lymph nodes in the ipsilateral compartment. Of the 6 patients who had negative lymph node metastasis (LNM) in SLNs, all patients had negative LNM in the ipsilateral compartment. Conclusions: The method may be helpful in the detection of true-positive but nonpalpable lymph nodes and may support a decision to perform a selective lateral node dissection in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma.
