Does Internet-Based Survey Have More Stable and Unbiased Results than Paper-and-Pencil Survey?  [PDF]

Abstract: This study designed to compare responses from an internet-based survey to those from a paper-and-pencil survey in terms of measurement reliability, validity, and equivalence using homogeneous demographic profiles of the undergraduates studying in Taiwan. Several similarities and differences were found between two types of survey in this study. For examples, contents of the survey items (i.e., internet-related vs. behavior-related) and survey environments significantly influence the distribution of responses. The normal distribution, internal consistency, in addition to construct, and convergent validity for individual construct are quite similar. However, the homological validity evidence was demonstrated through structural equation modeling across two survey modes. Implications and future research are also discussed.

Abstract: Understanding why firms choose to implement voluntary environmental schemes in a large polluted country like China is important for both environmental economists and policy makers. In this paper, we utilize unique plant-level survey data of 270 Chinese firms in manufacturing industry to identify the key determinants of their decisions on certifying ISO 14001 environmental management standard and the Chinese Environmental Label. The empirical results exhibit that while there are a number of factors (e.g., ownership, firm size, target market, and the number of rivals) having similar effects on the certification decisions between the two examined programs, the unique factors that only affect the decision of certifying one program (i.e., ISO 14001 or the Chinese Environmental Label) are also observed.

Abstract: We establish a reconstruction approach for the rotational quantum state of linear molecules possessing a magnetic manifold. Our approximate method contains an iteration with generalized matrix inverses, processing the tomographic integral of the time-dependent molecular-axis distribution in a polar angle. As shown in a simulated example for an alignment state, the density matrix is determined in a high fidelity. An analytic tomographic formula is also derived for the symmetric top rotation. The state coherent in the quantum space of both the angular momentum and its magnetic projection can be approximately retrieved from the observable time-resolved solid-angle distribution of the molecular axis.
Optimal approach to rotational state reconstruction of linear molecules

Abstract: We present a simulation for the reconstruction of the rotational quantum state of linear molecules to retrieve the density matrix. An optimal approach in the sense of minimal error limit is proposed, in which a variable set of angular frequency is properly chosen and the least square inversion is then applied. This approach of reconstruction from time-dependent molecular-axis angular distribution is proved adaptable for various object states, which has a good numerical stability independent of the selected rotational space.
Determination of baicalin in Xiaoyanling Decoction by high-performance liquid chromatography

Abstract: Objective: To establish a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of baicalin in Xiaoyanling Decoction. Methods: HPLC method was used for determination. A Kromosil C18 column was used. The mobile phase consisted of MeOH-acid water (H2O∶H3PO4=53∶0.2) 40∶60, and the detective wavelength was 277 nm. Results: The content of baicalin in each Xiaoyanling Decoction sample was not less than 0.40 mg/ml (RSD<5%). Conclusion: The content of baicalin in Xiao-yanling Decoction is high and stable, and it can be used as the quality standard for Xiaoyanling Decoction.
A Study of Choice of Leading Industry by Shift-Share-Method in the Case of Chongqing

Abstract: Based on conclusion of leading industries of the main characteristics and selection methods to compare the advantages and disadvantages, we use shift-share-method and select 29 manufacturing industry departments at two time points in 2002 and 2007 of Chongqing as analysis objects, with the circumstance of 29 manufacturing industry departments of the whole country for reference, to make a comprehensive comparative analysis of the quota to deviate weight, structure to deviate weight and competition ability to deviate weight of 29 manufacturing industry departments of Chongqing , we use of Shift-Share-Method to 29 manufacturing sectors of the share of component analysis, structural components and competitiveness to deviate from the deviation component analysis of Chongqing and draw Shift-Share analysis diagram. Through the graph analysis we screen out transportation equipment manufacturing, non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry, electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing industry in three industrial sectors, which are most likely to become the dominant industry, the advantages of industrial sectors. The above three industries, existing infrastructure and future development are analyzed in the Chongqing municipality. "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" to determine the focus of the development of industries to compare the results more consistent, indicating filter out the leading industry more in line with the actual Chongqing. The results of the analysis show that the Shift-Share-Method has a certain degree of objectivity, but also are easy to overlook the smaller lack of new industries. Therefore, to determine the future of the leading industries of Chongqing, itis yet to be fully comprehensive consideration of various influencing factors and careful determined.
A Tradeoff Drives the Evolution of Reduced Metal Resistance in Natural Populations of Yeast

Abstract: Various types of genetic modification and selective forces have been implicated in the process of adaptation to novel or adverse environments. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood in most natural populations. Here we report that a set of yeast strains collected from Evolution Canyon (EC), Israel, exhibit an extremely high tolerance to the heavy metal cadmium. We found that cadmium resistance is primarily caused by an enhanced function of a metal efflux pump, PCA1. Molecular analyses demonstrate that this enhancement can be largely attributed to mutations in the promoter sequence, while mutations in the coding region have a minor effect. Reconstruction experiments show that three single nucleotide substitutions in the PCA1 promoter quantitatively increase its activity and thus enhance the cells' cadmium resistance. Comparison among different yeast species shows that the critical nucleotides found in EC strains are conserved and functionally important for cadmium resistance in other species, suggesting that they represent an ancestral type. However, these nucleotides had diverged in most Saccharomyces cerevisiae populations, which gave cells growth advantages under conditions where cadmium is low or absent. Our results provide a rare example of a selective sweep in yeast populations driven by a tradeoff in metal resistance.
High-Resolution Mutation Mapping Reveals Parallel Experimental Evolution in Yeast

Abstract: Understanding the genetic basis of evolutionary adaptation is limited by our ability to efficiently identify the genomic locations of adaptive mutations. Here we describe a method that can quickly and precisely map the genetic basis of naturally and experimentally evolved complex traits using linkage analysis. A yeast strain that expresses the evolved trait is crossed to a distinct strain background and DNA from a large pool of progeny that express the trait of interest is hybridized to oligonucleotide microarrays that detect thousands of polymorphisms between the two strains. Adaptive mutations are detected by linkage to the polymorphisms from the evolved parent. We successfully tested our method by mapping five known genes to a precision of 0.2–24 kb (0.1–10 cM), and developed computer simulations to test the effect of different factors on mapping precision. We then applied this method to four yeast strains that had independently adapted to a fluctuating glucose–galactose environment. All four strains had acquired one or more missense mutations in GAL80, the repressor of the galactose utilization pathway. When transferred into the ancestral strain, the gal80 mutations conferred the fitness advantage that the evolved strains show in the transition from glucose to galactose. Our results show an example of parallel adaptation caused by mutations in the same gene.
