Comparative advantage, economic growth and free trade
Gallardo, Julio López;
Revista de Economia Contemporanea , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-98482005000200004
Abstract: the paper has two objectives. the first is to discuss whether developing countries can benefit by specializing according to their comparative advantage. the second objective is to discuss if an economy that adopts a free market policy, will in effect achieve greater economic efficiency. the author concludes that specialization according to comparative advantage would indeed benefit a country. he also argues that in an economy ruled by free competition and without governmental interference, market signals and forces are not by themselves sufficient to provide the necessary incentives to producers so that they fully use the available resources, and produce and trade according to comparative advantage.

Moneta e Credito , 2012,
Abstract: Kalecki devised a novel method of analysis, which was also used by some of his collaborators. Unfortunately however, that method has not had the impact it deserves on applied research, not even among his followers. The objective of the present paper is to revisit Kalecki’s applied studies. I will in the first place explain and discuss Kalecki’s outlook and methodology. In the second place, I will use it to see how much it can help to understand the recent evolution of the US economy. In the current US crisis, monetary policy, in the shape of quantitative easing and historically low rates of interest, has been hailed by publicists and pundits as the solution to confront the decline of private spending and the business downswing. The results of have been rather disappointing. Using Kalecki’s approach and methodology, I have verified that it has been public spending that has played the key role to avoid a deeper crisis than the one that actually took place.
The aim of this paper is to study the proximate causes as well as the historical origins of the downfall of the Mexican “economic miracle”, which took place approximately between 1950 and the mid-1970s. The author shares a view that holds that in the mid-1970s, Mexico’s previous growth strategy faded, and that sees the economic troubles as an expression of the exhaustion of that strategy. He shows how this economic exhaustion came about by considering the supply and demands limits to fast growth in an international context that deteriorated, especially when the import substitution strategy reached a relatively advanced stage. He then considers the relationship between economics and politics during the “miracle” period as much as in the following years, arguing that fast and stable growth also served as material support for an alliance between the upper classes and the political bureaucracy. Thus, the demise of the previous economic model also eroded the material and ideological framework that made possible or eased the class alliance built during the “miracle” years.
Manufacturing real wages in Mexico
López V, Antonia;Gallardo, Julio López;
Revista de Economia Política , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572006000300008
Abstract: in this paper we analyse the recent evolution and determinants of real wages in mexico?s manufacturing sector, using theories based on the assumption of imperfect competition both in the product and in the labour markets, especially wage-bargain theory, insider-outsider and mark-up models. we show evidence that the mexican labour market does not behave as a traditional competitive market. the proposed explanation for this fact is that some workers benefit from advantages when compared with others, so that they can get a greater share of the proceedings of the productive process. also, we find that changes in the degree of competition in the market for output influence the behaviour of real wages.
