Analysis of Radium Isotopes in Surface Waters nearby a Phosphate Mining with NORM at Santa Quitéria, Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract:

The radium isotopes 226Ra and 228Ra were analyzed in surface water at six points in the neighborhood of a mine of phosphate, associated with uranium, in the region of Santa Quitéria, state of Ceará, Brazil. Water samples were collected during twenty months, filtered and the concentrations of activity determined in the soluble and particulate phases. The results were analyzed using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for ordination of environmental data, and also by ANOVA, Tukey and Z tests to compare sets of data considering the radionuclides, the two analyzed phases and the six collecting points. The PCA identified four groups that included all collecting points, using aggregation features such as radionuclide and analyzed phase. The first group is composed by the samples of 226Ra in the soluble phase; the second group by samples of 226Ra in the particulate phase; the third one by 228Ra in the soluble phase, and finally, the fourth group by 228Ra in the particulate phase. This last group has two discrepant points (01 and 06). Statistical analysis identified differences between the concentrations of activity of radionuclides (228Ra higher than 226Ra) and in analyzed phases (soluble phase higher than the particulate one) but showed no differences between sampled points.

Abstract:

This study aims to assess the behavior of the release of Unat (i.e. uranium isotopes in natural relative abundance) from the release of water treated by the Ore Treatment Unit (UTM) in Caldas, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during the years 1999 to 2009. During this period, the unit showed no industrial activity, except between 2004 and 2005, when UTM operated 400 tons of monazite in a process to obtain rare earths. Unat was analyzed by spectrophotometry once per week in the effluent waters at sampling point 014. Two fractions were considered for analysis: the soluble one (that passes through a 0.45 μm filter) and the particulate one (retained on a 0.45 μm filter). Statistical analyses were performed: the “Z” test and Pearson’s r2 correlation index. The values for the soluble fraction were consistently lower than those of the particulate fraction and no statistically significant correlation was observed between the soluble and particulate fractions. However, the particulate and the total fractions (the sum of soluble and particulate) strongly correlated.

Abstract: the effect of gamma irradiation on aflatoxin b1 levels and fungal infection were investigated in peanut samples, tatu vermelho cultivar. at a radiation dose of 10 kgy, growth of molds was completely inhibited. doses of 15, 20, 25 and 30 kgy were sufficient for destruction of aflatoxin b1 by 55-74%. the results suggested that the decontamination of molds by irradiation, before production of aflatoxin b1, is the most acceptable method in the preservation of peanut.

Abstract:

Proteins recovered were obtained from Whitemouth Croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) byproducts and their physico-chemical and functional properties were evaluated. The proximate composition, presented 8.64% ± 0.10% of moisture, 85.33% ± 0.12% of protein, 2.69% ± 0.09% of ashes and 2.16% ± 0.12% of lipids, in dry basis. The highest solubility was obtained in pH 11 (93.24%), the maximum water holding capacity was presented at pH 11 (25.71 mL H2O/gprotein), the oil holding capacity was 13.71 mL/gprotein and the digestibility in vitro was 91.32% ± 0.15%. The electro-phoretic profile was observed typical of the myofibrillar proteins, with the appearance of the heavy chain of myosin (220 kDa) and actin (50 kDa). The results show that the products of low commercial value of fish that are usually used for the production of animal feed or simply discarded, contributing to environmental pollution, may be used to produce products with a greater added value.

Abstract: this work aims at analyzing the development of fish farming in the lower region of the s?o francisco river in the state of alagoas, brazil. we interviewed active and inactive fish farmers from this region between march and july 2005. the obtained results show mainly that the level of income can be determining for the development of sustainable and profitable fish farming taking into account that some of the small producers depend on governmental subsidies.

Abstract: the article deals with the historical memory of getúlio vargas (1883-1954) - who governed brazil from 1930 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1954 -, in its close association to the catete palace, in rio de janeiro, which was the republic presidency's seat during that period. such a memory was investigated in terms of the social representations about getúlio which were manifested by 410 visitors to an exhibition held in the palace - republic museum, nowadays - in honor to the fiftieth anniversary of his death. results, which were obtained from responses to a free association task and to a concise questionnaire, evidence that the memory which was built about the historical trajectory of vargas is a complex and controversial one, but it tends sharply for the positive pole, since the evaluations that getúlio did more good than bad things and that he deserves to be remembered as "father of the poor people" and as "brazil's greatest statesman" prevail.

Abstract: OBJETIVO: Avaliar o consumo dos grupos alimentares em crian as usuárias da rede pública de saúde do município de Aracaju, Sergipe. MéTODOS: Estudo transversal com crian as de 6 a 35 meses de cinco Unidades Básicas de Saúde. Para a avalia o dietética foi utilizado o recordatório alimentar de 24 horas. Os alimentos e prepara es consumidos pelas crian as foram transformados em por es relacionadas aos oito grupos da Piramide Alimentar, e suas inadequa es foram analisadas de acordo com as recomenda es dos guias alimentares brasileiros. Comparou-se o consumo alimentar das faixas etárias de 6 a 11, 12 a 23 e 24 a 35 meses. Para análise das variáveis, os testes estatísticos Kruskal-Wallis e qui-quadrado foram utilizados, considerando nível de significancia de 5%. RESULTADOS: Dentre as 359 crian as incluídas, observou-se consumo insuficiente de hortali as, frutas, leite e derivados, e alto consumo de a úcares e doces. Quando comparado o consumo entre as diferentes faixas etárias, as crian as de 6 a 11 meses apresentaram menor consumo de frutas, carnes e leguminosas, e as de 24 a 35 meses tiveram maiores percentuais de ingest o excessiva de cereais, a úcares e doces, óleos e gorduras. CONCLUS ES: O consumo alimentar das crian as apresentou inadequa es nos grupos alimentares das frutas, hortali as, leite e derivados, a úcares e doces, além de diferen as significativas no consumo entre as faixas etárias. Nesse contexto, é importante salientar a necessidade da educa o alimentar e nutricional, respeitando as especificidades de cada grupo etário, visando a contribuir para a preven o de problemas nutricionais em médio e longo prazos. Carbon Xerogel Catalyst for NO Oxidation

Abstract: Carbon xerogels were prepared by the polycondensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde using three different solution pH values and the gels were carbonized at three different temperatures. Results show that it is possible to tailor the pore texture of carbon xerogels by adjusting the pH of the initial solution and the carbonization temperature. Materials with different textural properties were obtained and used as catalysts for NO oxidation at room temperature. The NO conversions obtained with carbon xerogels were quite high, showing that carbon xerogels are efficient catalysts for NO oxidation. A maximum of 98% conversion for NO was obtained at initial concentration of NO of 1000 ppm and 10% of O 2. The highest NO conversions were obtained with the samples presenting the highest surface areas. The temperature of reaction has a strong influence on NO oxidation: the conversion of NO decreases with the increase of reaction temperature.
