Abstract: because an enriched environment (ee) enhances t-cell activity and t-lymphocytes contribute to immunopathogenesis during heterologous dengue virus (denv) infections, we hypothesised that an ee increases dengue severity. to compare single serotype (ss) and antibody-enhanced disease (aed) infections regimens, serial intraperitoneal were performed with denv3 (genotype iii) infected brain homogenate or anti-denv2 hyperimmune serum followed 24 h later by denv3 (genotype iii) infected brain homogenate. compared aed for which significant differences were detected between the ee and impoverished environmental (ie) groups (kaplan-meyer log-rank test, p = 0.0025), no significant differences were detected between the ss experimental groups (kaplan-meyer log-rank test, p = 0.089). survival curves from ee and ie animals infected with the aed regimen were extended after corticoid injection and this effect was greater in the ee than in the ie group (kaplan-meyer log-rank test, p = 0.0162). under the aed regimen the ee group showed more intense clinical signs than the ie group. dyspnoea, tremor, hunched posture, ruffled fur, immobility, pre-terminal paralysis, shock and death were associated with dominant t-lymphocytic hyperplasia and presence of viral antigens in the liver and lungs. we propose that the increased expansion of these memory t-cells and serotype cross-reactive antibodies facilitates the infection of these cells by denv and that these events correlate with disease severity in an ee.

Abstract: purpose: to check the concordance between the middle latency response and temporal processing tests. methods: 155 normal hearing subjects of both genders (age group range between 7 to 16 years) were evaluated with the pitch and duration pattern tests (behavioral) and middle latency response (electrophysiologic) and divided into two groups: normal and abnormal, according to their test results. results: among all subjects, 30% showed abnormality in the tests, except for the middle latency response that was under 17.4%. the pitch and duration patterns (right and left ears) agreed until 12 years of age. from 13 years, there was a greater number of alteration in the pitch patterns than in the duration patterns. the pitch and duration patterns (right and left ears) and mlr did not show concordance. for the 7 and 8-year-old group, the combination pitch and duration patterns normal/abnormal middle latency response had greater occurrence than the combination pitch and duration patterns abnormal / normal middle latency response. for the other groups the opposite occurred. there was not statistical difference among the age groups regarding normal and abnormal results for the pitch patterns (right and left ears) and middle latency response, the duration patterns showed more abnormal results for the 9, 10 years old group. conclusion: it was not possible to verify concordance between the middle latency response and behavioral evaluation of frequency and duration patterns test.
Efeito da reten??o de um herbicida pela cobertura morta do solo, no controle das ervas daninhas e na produ??o do milho com cultivo mínimo
Pastana, F. I.;
Bragantia , 1972, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051972000100022
Abstract: this study was designed to determine the effects of atrazine, mulching, and irrigation on weed growth and corn yields in minimum tillage. it consisted of two field experiments set out on two soil types, which were a typic hapludult, cecil series, and a typic paleudult, norfolk series, located at watkinsville and midville, georgia, u.s.a., respectively. the experimental areas were planted to corn with irrigated and non-irrigated treatments, with mulched and non-mulched (bare) soil surfaces. these plots were sprayed with four rates of atrazine (aatrex w-80). for the conditions of this study, the following conclusions are indicated: 1 - weed growth was more vigorous on mulched, non-irrigated plots than on plots with other treatments on cecil soil. no significant differences in weed growth were found between treatments on norfolk soil. on both experiments it was observed that weed growth tended to be less as rates of atrazine were increased; 2 - corn yields were substantially higher on mulched soil than under non-mulched ones, especially with irrigation on cecil soil. mulching did not affect corn yields significantly on the norfolk soil. atrazine controlled weeds and increased corn yields significantly on the norfolk soil only.
Justi?a penal autoritária e consolida??o do estado punitivo no Brasil
Pastana, Débora;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782009000100008
Abstract: the brazilian democratic transition, still underway today, has run up against enormous difficulty in incorporating penal action. or, put in yet stronger terms, we could say that the boundaries of democratization processes, delineated through the action of that sector of the state, reveal the possibility that the juridical field remains immune to democratizing change. although prevailing discourse among law professionals asserts that penal justice is undergoing democratization, what we have observed in practice is a strong resistance within the juridical field to assuming political responsibilities within the consolidation of democracy. this article reports analyses and conclusions formulated through observation of the brazilian penal justice system that gave origin to the thesis entitled "penal justice in brazil today: democratic discourse, authoritarian practice". the research sought to reflect on contemporary criminal justice policy, which has been guided by the widening of repression and the continued use of incarceration. such policy, carried out in brazil since the beginning of the 1985 "political opening" has adjusted itself to the liberal project that is also currently underway in the country, as well as in almost the entire western capitalist world. as we can observe, penal justice, even during the execution of sentences, operates in authoritarian and exclusive ways, suppressing the rights guaranteed by law to those who have been sentenced and adopting extremely repressive forms as demonstrated by the extremely sparse benefits that it concedes. thus, in brazil, criminality has generally been responded through severe sentences, reflected in the absence of guarantees of constitutional rights and ample recourse to incarceration. in this vein, our contemporary democratic governments have frequently adopted a punitive stance that seeks to reaffirm the state's aptitudes for punishing and controlling criminality.

Abstract: This article reports analyses and conclusions formulated from comments about Brazilian Justice and that they had given to origin the thesis Criminal Justice in Current Brazil: Democratic speech - practical authoritarian. This article aims to reflect on contemporary democracy and its paradoxical coexistence with excessof order. More than mere coexistence, there is the need to subdue thedemocratic ideal to authoritarianism. This democracy, evidenced in Brazil after the political opening that occurred in 1985, he fits the liberal project also underway in the country and in virtually all the capitalist West.

Estudos de Sociologia , 2007,
Abstract: This article reports on analyses and conclusions formulated from comments made on criminal violence in the recent democratic period of national history that had originated the master degree text entitled Culture of Fear: Reflections on Criminal Violence, Social Control and Citizenship in Brazil. This research has made possible pertinent reflections regarding the public opinion related to security, also serving for an ethical questioning on the importance of the participative citizen in the consolidation of the Brazilian democracy and on new existing forms of domination in our society. By detaching the manner in which the fear of criminal violence intervenes with our contemporary social relations we sought to identify it as a recent instrument of domination in the universe of politics. Keyword: Fear. Violence. Crime. Public opinion. Democracy.
Bertoni, José;Pastana, Francisco I.;
Bragantia , 1964, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051964000100001
Abstract: data on rainfall, soil erosion and water losses from runoff plots were recorded for a 10-year period in four experiment stations, campinas, ribeir?o prêto, pindorama, and mococa. correlation studies were made between the soil and water losses, and total rainfall; also, the data were examined in relation to the 5, 15, 30, and 60-minute rain intensity in millimeters per hour. rainfall intensity and distribution influenced the intensity and total volume of soil and water losses induced by erosion. however, no definite relationship could be established based on the collected data. it is suggested that future studies, including determinations of soil humidity prior to rains (api - antecedent precipitation index), rainfall duration and kinetic energy of rainfall drops, might show a clearer relationship.
