Carbon Xerogel Catalyst for NO Oxidation
Juliana P. S. Sousa,Manuel F. R. Pereira,José L. Figueiredo
Catalysts , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/catal2040447
Abstract: Carbon xerogels were prepared by the polycondensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde using three different solution pH values and the gels were carbonized at three different temperatures. Results show that it is possible to tailor the pore texture of carbon xerogels by adjusting the pH of the initial solution and the carbonization temperature. Materials with different textural properties were obtained and used as catalysts for NO oxidation at room temperature. The NO conversions obtained with carbon xerogels were quite high, showing that carbon xerogels are efficient catalysts for NO oxidation. A maximum of 98% conversion for NO was obtained at initial concentration of NO of 1000 ppm and 10% of O 2. The highest NO conversions were obtained with the samples presenting the highest surface areas. The temperature of reaction has a strong influence on NO oxidation: the conversion of NO decreases with the increase of reaction temperature.

Lopes, Manuel Alvim Leite;Ferreira, Hebert Pereira;Carvalho, Juliana Costa;Cardoso, Lídia;André, Charles;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2007000700019
Abstract: objective: to verify the sensitivity of the conventional subtests of the behavioral inattention test (bit) in the diagnosis of hemineglect after stroke. method: one hundred and two patients with cerebral infarct or hemorrhage were prospectively evaluated. in 22, hemineglect was diagnosed using standard bit criteria. the frequency of hemineglect using 6 commonly used screening subtests of this battery was assessed. results: hemineglect would not be recognized in 10 patients if they were only screened using the line crossing test; this would be the case in 2 patients with the letter cancellation test; and in 4 patient with the line bisection test. three patients would not be diagnosed even if both line crossing and line bisection tests were used. conclusion: hemineglect may not be recognized with single screening tests commonly used. the use of a standard battery is recommended to improve diagnostic sensitivity in individuals with various subtypes of hemineglect.

Abstract: Diabetic Nephropathy (DN) is considered the main cause of end stage kidney disease around the world. However, its pathogenesis is not completely established. More than just a direct consequence of chronic glycemic changes, recent studies had suggested Diabetic Nephropathy could be considered an inflammatory disease. It has been shown that concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as IL-1, IL-6, IL-18, IL-33, IFN-γ and TNF-α actively participate in development and progression of DN, and thus, are involved in pathogenesis. Besides, changes in acquired immune response, especially the presence of cellular immune response profiles of pro-inflammatory and effector nature, mainly Th1 and Th17, as the imbalance between interaction of cytokines and T regulatory cells, foment the onset and progression of DN. Here we summarize the main evidences that support the critical role of the immune system in this condition. These new conceptual advances in DN understanding are essential for development of new the rapeutical strategies and prognostic factors, which could be protagonists or adjuvants to the current ones, leading ultimately to a better clinical management of DN patients.

Abstract: considering that the grain temperature may influence the exposure time of the fumigants, the present study was carried out to investigate the influence of increasing temperatures of the grain mass (20, 30, 35 and 40 oc) on the exposure time to ozone required to kill 50 and 95% of adult insects of tribolium castaneum (herbst) (coleoptera: tenebrionidae). maize grains were distributed in cylindrical polyvinyl chloride recipients having connections for gas injection and exhaustion. the insects held in cages were placed at the median height of the grain mass in each recipient, which was then fumigated with ozone at the concentration of 50 ppm. the lethal times (lt50 and lt95) for adult insects of t. castaneum were reduced by increasing grain temperature, from 20 to 30 oc; however, at 35 oc the lethal times were not reduced compared with lower temperatures; but at 40 oc the exposure time decreased again, resulting in lower lt95.

Abstract: this retrospective study aims to analyze the usefulness of bilateral bone marrow biopsy in bone marrow infiltration by diffuse large b-cell lymphoma (dlbcl). our objectives were to assess the incidence of unilateral bm involvement by dlbcl and compare fragment length obtained from positive and negative samples for infiltration. furthermore, we compared the differences between unilateral and bilateral infiltration correlating with lactic dehydrogenase (ldh) and computerized tomography (ct) staging. we evaluated 268 cases of dlbcl and observed medullary infiltration in 34 cases (13%). it was not possible to evaluate 6 out of 34 cases. 70 bm fragments were reviewed as to the presence or absence of infiltration and length. the mean number of fragments per case was 2.5; the mean bm fragment length was 11.01 mm (± 5.12 mm) and the mean bm fragment length per case was 27.53 mm. there was unilateral bm infiltration in six cases (21.4%). there were no differences in the mean fragment length as to the presence/absence of infiltration 10.95 mm (± 5.2 mm) versus 11.57 mm, p > 0.05, respectively. there were no differences in 23 cases between the comparison of unilateral medullary infiltration versus bilateral with lactic dehydrogenase and ct staging. we concluded that bilateral bone marrow biopsy was superior to unilateral because it may increase by 21.4% the detection of bm involvement by dlbcl.

Abstract: fluoride determination by ion selective electrode (ise) in carbon nanotubes (cnts) is proposed after pyrohydrolysis decomposition. up to 1 g of cnts could be decomposed improving the limit of detection (1.5 μg g-1), precision (rsd < 5%) and accuracy (agreement higher than 95% with values of certified reference materials (crms) and microwave-induced combustion (mic)). fluoride could be absorbed in water and the resulting solution can be analyzed by ise. pyrohydrolysis is easy to be performed and does not require any sophisticated instrumentation, which is attractive for routine fluoride control in cnts.

Abstract: vascular neoformation is an essential event in the development of the human body. in this phase vascular networks undergo expansion. mature endothelial cells constitute the structure of vessel walls so endothelial cells from bone marrow migrate to sites of vascular neoformation with subsequent differentiation as mature endothelial cells (endothelial progenitor cells). physiopathological and pathological processes such as cancer use angiogenesis as an important component for growth. studies correlate angiogenesis with aggressive tumors for some types of tumors, including hematological malignancies, thereby highlighting the importance of anti-angiogenic therapy.

Abstract: The proposal of this study was to compare the effects of two commercial diets, one consisting of dry dog food and another one of pelletized feed for toucans, in the growth of young toco toucans. The development of 14 specimens was observed, being four and five months of age, and divided randomly into two groups. Once a week, the fasted birds were weighted and evaluated in relation to the following biometrics parameters, with the help of a caliper: wings (right and left); head and beak (length, width and height), wingspan and total body length. To evaluate the presence of difference in body gain between the two groups, the U test of Mann-Whitney was used as statistical analysis, with significance level of 0.05 in a bilateral test. Birds of both groups showed no changes in behavior such as depression or aggression. The diets were well accepted, no waste was observed and all the animals remained healthy during the research. In respect to biometrics, toucans fed with dog food had a better development for the length of right and left wings, head width, height and length of the beak and weight gain, when compared with those treated with feed for toucans. This fact enables the use of dry dog food with 23% of crude protein and 71,15mg/Kg of iron for feeding of toco toucans in captivity.

Thirty bean samples of different brands were chosen in the Goiania retail market to be analized by thin-layer chromatography in order to detect the possible presence of aflatoxins. Only one sample showed a very low concentration of aflatoxins B1 and G1. The level of contaminants was inferior to 2.5 ppb (the standard). The process was repeated by boiling the sample at 116oC for 30 minutes under 0.7 kgf/cm2 of pressure and then analyzed once again. The same level of contaminants was found proving the insufficiency of the thermal combustion method. KEY-WORDS: Micotoxin; food; Leguminoseae.
