Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81082010000300007
Abstract: objective: to describe the process of translation and adaptation into brazilian portuguese of the family accommodation scale for obsessive-compulsive disorder - interviewer-rated (fas-ir). method: the process of translation and adaptation of the scale involved four bilingual health professionals. the scale was initially translated into brazilian portuguese independently by two professionals. then, the two versions were compared, resulting in a preliminary portuguese version that was administered to 15 relatives of patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd) with different education levels, deliberately chosen to collect language adjustment suggestions. subsequently, the scale was translated back into english independently by two other professionals. after comparing the two back translations, a new english version was generated. this version was reviewed and approved by the authors of the original scale. results: the brazilian portuguese version of the fas-ir proved to be easily understood and can be used in relatives of ocd patients from different socioeconomic backgrounds. conclusion: adaptation of the fas-ir into brazilian portuguese will enable health professionals to assess the level of accommodation in relatives of ocd patients and allows the development of future studies aimed at 1) studying the influence of family accommodation on maintaining and possibly facilitating ocd symptoms, and 2) assessing the effect of family accommodation on treatment outcomes in portuguese-speaking populations.
Pesticide Influence on the Desmid Flora of a Reservoir in an Agricultural Region at Campo Verde, Mato Grosso, Brazil  [PDF]

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2014.512110
Abstract: The objective of the research was to investigate the influence of pesticides on the desmid flora. Five series of samples were taken between July 5, 2005, and April 6, 2006, for analysis of pesticide content and algal community structure in the Sao Lourenco River springs on the Pirassununga Ranch, Campo Verde, Mato Grosso. The greatest amounts of pesticides were detected in July, when the abundance of algae was also greatest. Positive correlations were determined between the concentrations of endosulfan (r = 0.94; p = 0.051), cyhalothrin (r = 0.96; p = 0.037) and endrin (r = 0.96; p = 0.037) and the biomass of desmids. Insecticides, such as endosulfan, inhibit the activity of ATPase, contributing considerably to the mortality of the biota, since ATP is of fundamental importance in the energy metabolism of all organisms. This suggests that the pesticides promote algal growth both by removing the small herbivores that feed on the algae and increasing the release of inorganic nutrients from decomposing animals in the water. Algae were least abundance in January, possibly due to the presence of the herbicide atrazine (r = -0.63; p > 0.05).
Imposex in Thais rustica (Mollusca: Neogastropoda) (Lamark, 1822) as an indicator of organotin compounds pollution at Maceio coast (Northeastern Brazil)

Brazilian Journal of Oceanography , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-87592004000200002
Abstract: the use of otc (organotin compounds) as biocides in naval antifouling paints causes impacts on non-target organisms. one of these impacts is a syndrome called imposex in gastropod molluscs. imposex is the imposition of male secondary sexual characteristics in female gastropods as result of endocrine disruption. in this preliminary study, imposex was observed in four out of ten sampled stations in maceió: the city port (100% females exhibited imposex), the marine emissary (23% females exhibited imposex), the marine terminal (35% females exhibited imposex) and saco da pedra beach (12% females exhibited imposex). these stations were distributed in a ne-sw orientation from the port southwards along the coastline, following the general circulation pattern of the area. the low values of vdsi, rpsi and rpli indicate that maceió coast is a less contaminated area, probably because of low shipping activities together with the fact that the sampling zone is an open coastal system and not an enclosed bay. these results suggest that the imposex development in thais rustica may be used as a biological indicator of otc pollution.

Abstract: Different components of the mixed function oxidase (MFO) system and the levels of fluorescent aromatic compounds in bile (FACs) were measured in Cathorops spixii in order to assess the impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Fish were sampled in an estuary (Santos/S o Vicente) with a history of contamination by PAHs, mainly due to the presence of the industrial complex of Cubat o city and of another of low anthropogenic influence (Cananéia) on the Brazilian coast. FACs were higher in fish from the polluted site, and the PAH 5 and 6-ring metabolites were the most frequent - with 14% and 15%, respectively. Levels of the different components of the MFO system showed the same variation profile as the FACs for both estuaries. Therefore, the values found for somatic indexes and biomarkers with data of bile PAH metabolites indicate the presence of organic contaminants, especially in the area subject to the influence of the industrial complex on the Santos/S o Vicente estuary.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate the intake, total and partial dry matter (dm) digestibility and the nutrients and ruminal parameters of steer fed diet based on cottonseed processing residue (cspr) supplemented with sugarcane dried yeast. six steers, with rumen and duodenal cannulae were fed diets consisting of 80% cspr and 20% concentrate, consisting of corn, urea and yeast at levels of 0, 20 or 40%. a randomized block design was used to analyze intake and digestibility and the ruminal parameters were analyzed in split plots. the dm, om, ee, ndf and adf intake and digestibility were not influenced by yeast supplementation, possibly because of the high value of the c fraction of the cspr (44.51% dm) and the low protein fraction of slow degradation of yeast that prevented synchronization energy/nitrogen for greater residue degradation. the ruminal liquid ph decreased linearly in the animals kept on yeast supplemented diets. in all treatments the ph and ammonia nitrogen concentration were adequate for microbial growth. the ruminal concentrations of acetate, propionate, butyrate, total fatty acid and the acetate: propionate ratio values were not influenced by yeast supplementation. cottonseed processing residue can be used as ruminant feedstuff.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-736X2011000200009
Abstract: the objective of the study was to determine the association between clinical ophthalmic alterations and seroreactivity to leptospirosis by serovar icterohaemorrhagiae in horses in rio de janeiro, brazil. a total of 199 horses were studied. a microscopic agglutination test (mat) was used to detect specific anti-leptospira antibodies in blood serum. a total of 107 (53.8%) horses were seroreactive (titres > 200); 54 had high (> 800) titres, of which 44 were against serovar icterohaemorrhagiae. forty-two out of these 44, plus 40 seronegative horses (titers < 100) were given detailed ophthalmic examinations. epiphora, ocular congestion, blepharospasm, photophobia, and peripapillary focal depigmentation were the most frequent alterations in seroreactive horses. most ocular alterations were significantly more frequent in seroreactive horses. horses seroreactive for leptospirosis (serovar icterohaemorrhagiae) had a significantly higher prevalence of ophthalmic alterations than seronegative horses, providing additional evidence for an association between leptospirosis and equine uveitis.
