Occurrence of Antimicrobials in River Water Samples from Rural Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract: The occurrence of antimicrobials in the aquatic environment and drinking water has raised the question of their impact on the environment and public health. Animal production is one of the most expressive activities of Brazilian agribusiness. In order to ensure the productivity and competitiveness of the sector, the use of drugs for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes is a common practice. Due to the continuous release of antimicrobials into the environment, the aim of this study was to compare the frequency of detection of tetracyclines and sulfonamides in surface water collected from rural areas in Lidice District of Rio Claro, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An investigative study was conducted with 24 river water samples analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry and the aim of this study was to determine residues of sulfonamides and tetracyclines based on the USEPA method 1694. The results indicated the presence of sulfamethoxazole and oxytetracycline concentrations at the ng·L-1 level. The applied method showed overall good performance with recoveries above 57%, method detection limits ≤ 7.17 ng·L-1, method quantification limits ≤ 23.90 ng·L-1 and good linearity.

Abstract: Diversas manifesta es culturais presentes na cidade – e com baixa visibilidade no espa o escolar – têm os jovens como atores principais. Os jovens criam espa os próprios de socializa o que se transformam em territórios culturalmente expressivos e nos quais diferentes identidades s o elaboradas. A cultura se manifesta como espa o social privilegiado de práticas, representa es, símbolos e rituais. A produ o das identidades, além de demarcar territórios de sociabilidades e de práticas coletivas, p e em jogo interesses em comum que d o sentido ao “estar junto” e ao ser dos grupos. Nos territórios culturais juvenis delineam-se espa os de autonomia conquistados pelos jovens e que permitem a eles e elas transformar esses mesmos ambientes ressignificando-os a partir de suas práticas específicas. O artigo apresenta e discute processos sociais e culturais contemporaneos produtores das denominadas culturas juvenis e procura chamar a aten o para o necessário reconhecimento desses processos pela escola. Os grupos culturais juvenis s o decisivos na socializa o dos jovens que frequentam a escola de Ensino Médio que, além de alunos, s o, também, sujeitos de outros espa os e tempos culturais da cidade. Abstract:

The aim of this work was to evaluate the catalytic properties for n-hexane isomerization of bifunctional monometallic (Ni or Pt) and bimetallic catalysts (Pt-Ni), using HMOR zeolite as support. The method used for metal dispersion in the zeolite was competitive ion exchange using ammine complexes [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2 and [Pt(NH3)4]Cl2 as precursors. The catalysts were characterized by X-Ray diffraction, X-Ray energy dispersion spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction and transmission electron microscopy. The n-hexane isomerization reaction using the catalysts was carried out to evaluate the catalyst activity. The reaction was carried out in a fixed bed reactor operating at 250?C, 1 atm, H2/C6 = 9 molar ratio. The profiles obtained from TPR suggest that, for bimetallic catalysts, the presence of platinum facilitates the reduction of Ni2+ cations. The bimetallic catalysts presented a higher activity in the isomerization of n-hexane when compared to the monometallic ones, as well better stability as the Pt content in the solid increases.

Crescimento de mudas de mamoeiro conduzidas em diferentes ambientes protegidos, recipientes e substratos na regi?o de Aquidauana, Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract: an experiment with growth and formation of papaya seedlings was carried out in the state university of mato grosso do sul, unit of aquidauana, mato grosso do sul state, brazil, from september to november 2006. four protected environments, two kinds of pots and three substrate compositions were evaluated. the height of plants (cm) and leaf number were evaluated. the environments covered with screen (black and aluminized monofilament) showed best results to height and leaf number during experimental development. polyethylene bags were the best containers to grow papaya seedlings. the substrate with vermiculite showed the best results in both containers and all environments. in the end phase of seedling formation, the aluminized screen led to bigger plants in better substrates. polystyrene trays with 72 cells were not viable for growing papaya seedlings. the substrate with higher percentage of sawdust showed the worst results.

Abstract: the objective of the work was to evaluate the effects of environment, recipients, and substrate compositions in passion fruit (passiflora edulis sims f. flavicarpa deg.) seedlings biomass production in pantanal region from september to november of 2006. experimental trials were conducted in four protected environments, in two types of containers and three different substrate compositions. the environments were: a1 (greenhouse covered with low-density, 150-microns-thick polyethylene film), a2 (monofilament black screened with mesh for 50% of shade), a3 (aluminized screened with mesh for 50% of shade) and a4 (environment covered with straw of native coconut palm); the recipients were: polyethylene bags (r1) (15 x 25 cm) and polystyrene trays (r2) (with 72 cells). there substrates were: s1 (soil + organic compost + vermiculite, 1:1: 1 v/v), s2 (soil + organic compost + sawdust, 1:1: 1 v/v) and s3 (soil + organic compost + vermiculite + sawdust, 1:1: 1/2: 1/2 v/v). the experimental design was completely randomized statistical analysis in split-split-plot, with fifteen replications. the treatments in the plot were environments, in the subplots were pots, and subsubplots were substrates (4 x 2 x 3 = 24 treatments). fresh and dry mass of aerial and root system parts were evaluated. environments with screen showed better results for seedlings of yellow passion fruit biomass in polyethylene bags. polyethylene bags promoted higher biomasses. the substrate with vermiculite showed better results for both types of containers. the substrate with a higher percentage of sawdust showed the worst result.

Abstract: Experimento com o crescimento e a forma o de mudas de mamoeiro foiconduzido em ambientes protegidos na Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul, Unidade Universitária de Aquidauana, nos meses de setembro a novembro de 2006. Foram utilizados quatro ambientes protegidos, dois tipos de recipientes e três composi es de substratos. Foram avaliados as alturas de plantas e o número de folhas. Os ambientes telados (monofilamento e aluminizado) promoveram maiores alturas de plantas e maiores números de folhas ao longo do desenvolvimento experimental. A sacola de polietileno se mostrou como o melhor recipiente para a produ o de mudas de mamoeiro. Os substratos que continham vermiculita apresentaram os melhoresresultados para o crescimento e a forma o das mudas. Na fase final de forma o das mudas, o ambiente com tela aluminizada promoveu plantas maiores nos melhores substratos. As bandejas de poliestireno n o se mostraram viáveis para crescimento e forma o de mudas do mamoeiro. O substrato com maior porcentagem de pó-de-serra mostrou ser ineficiente para a produ o de mudas de mamoeiro em Aquidauana,Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, necessitando de maior tempo de estabiliza o biológica. Abstract: Objetivou-se comparar as variáveis sociodemográficas e hábitos de vida dos idosos com e sem indicativo de depress o. Trata-sede um inquérito domiciliar, descritivo, transversal e observacional, do qual participaram 850 idosos residentes na zona rural de um município de Minas Gerais. Utilizaram-se os instrumentos estruturados e a Escala de Depress o Geriátrica Abreviada, seguidos de análise descritiva e teste qui-quadrado (p<0,05). Predominaram os idosos com indicativo de depress o do sexo feminino, 80 anos ou mais, donas de casa, que n o realizavam atividade física e n o faziam uso de álcool, quando comparados aos sem indicativo. A propor o de idosos sem indicativo de depress o foi significativamente superior à dos idosos com indicativo quanto às atividades de passatempo. N o houve diferen a significativa entre os grupos em rela o ao arranjo de moradia e tabagismo. Conclui-se que esses resultados podem subsidiar o desenvolvimento de a es de preven o da depress o, além do tratamento e recupera o dos acometidos.
Indoor Air Mycological Survey and Occupational Exposure in Libraries in Mato Grosso-Central Region—Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Indoor air quality in environments where there is great circulation of people, posing risks to the health of its occupants, including allergic problems, infections and contaminations, can be aided by climatic factors, chemicals and biological agents housed in these environments, influencing the location and providing favorable conditions for the degradation of bibliographic collections. The present study investigated the presence of fungi in indoor environments in seven public and private libraries in the central region of Brazil, Mato Grosso, and verified the impact on occupational health. Results: A total of 26,194 fungal specimens were isolated from 342 dust samples collected using three techniques: Andersen’s sampler (12.3%), exposure plate dish (25.1%) and sterile swab (62.6%). A total of 184 fungal species were identified: 156 (84.8%) mycelial fungi and 28 (15.2%) yeast fungi, belonging 54 fungal genera, 43 (79.6%) mycelial fungi and 11 (20.4%) yeast fungi. The genus Aspergillus (40.6%) was one of the main fungi present in indoor air. Aspergillus niger (12.3%) was identified as the most prevalent species in literary environments, followed by Cryptococcus spp. (7.1%) and Cladosporium cladosporioides (7.0%). In relation to seasonal distribution, there was a greater fungal isolation in the dry season (54%); followed by the rainy season (46%). Conclusion: These results suggest the substrates researched in the evaluated environments presented in the form of documents, books and papers associated with dust and air humidity become suitable for microbiological proliferation. These findings highlight the importance of minimizing the risk of exposure to fungal agents, identified in pathogenic and toxigenic microenvironments in library collections.
