Embedding PV and WF Models into Steady State Studies by an Optimization Strategy  [PDF]

Abstract: Modeling of photovoltaic (PV) and wind farms (WF) stations to take into account these renewable energies into the power flow formulation are summarized. A strategy based on multi objective optimization in order to allocate PV and WF power into electrical power system is proposed. It is assumed that there are a reduced number of choices to allocate the stations. The algorithm is applied to the 39-bus test power system. The results show that the proposed algorithm is capable of optimal placement of renewable units.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to contribute to the dynamic modeling of multi-pulse voltage sourced converter based static synchronous series compensator and static synchronous compensator. Details about the internal functioning and topology connections are given in order to understand the multi-pulse converter. Using the 24 and 48-pulse topologies switching functions models are presented. The models correctly represent commutations of semiconductor devices in multi-pulse converters, which consequently allows a precise representation of harmonic components. Additionally, time domain models that represent harmonic components are derived based on the switching functions models. Switching functions, as well as time domain models are carried out in the original abc power system coordinates. Effectiveness and precision of the models are validated against simulations performed in Matlab/Simulink®. Additionally, in order to accomplish a more realistic comparison, a laboratory prototype set up is used to assess simulated waveforms.

Abstract: Ellipsoid fitting algorithms are widely used to calibrate Magnetic Angular Rate and Gravity (MARG) sensors. These algorithms are based on the minimization of an error function that optimizes the parameters of a mathematical sensor model that is subsequently applied to calibrate the raw data. The convergence of this kind of algorithms to a correct solution is very sensitive to input data. Input calibration datasets must be properly distributed in space so data can be accurately fitted to the theoretical ellipsoid model. Gathering a well distributed set is not an easy task as it is difficult for the operator carrying out the maneuvers to keep a visual record of all the positions that have already been covered, as well as the remaining ones. It would be then desirable to have a system that gives feedback to the operator when the dataset is ready, or to enable the calibration process in auto-calibrated systems. In this work, we propose two different algorithms that analyze the goodness of the distributions by computing four different indicators. The first approach is based on a thresholding algorithm that uses only one indicator as its input and the second one is based on a Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) that estimates the calibration error for a given calibration set using a weighted combination of two indicators. Very accurate classification between valid and invalid datasets is achieved with average Area Under Curve (AUC) of up to 0.98.

Abstract: In this paper we present REG, a graph-based approach for study a fundamental problem of Natural Language Processing (NLP): the automatic text summarization. The algorithm maps a document as a graph, then it computes the weight of their sentences. We have applied this approach to summarize documents in three languages.

Abstract: El Movimiento de los Derechos Civiles de los Mestizos (de origen étnico mixto) en los Estados Unidos se puede dividir en cinco fases: pre-Derechos, Civiles, Derechos Civiles, Educación Bilingüe-Multicultural, Conservatismo Político, y el período presente, un Ataque a los Derechos Civiles. La carrera investigativa del autor ha sido influenciada por las diferentes fases del Movímiento, y su trabajo en el concepto de la personalidad multicultural ha reflejado estrechamente sus varias fases. El Movimiento no sólo proveyó modelos multiculturales tales como César Chavez, Malcolm X, Dolores Huerta, Martin Luther King Jr., y Rosa Park, sino que también ayudó a liberar al autor de los paradigmas racista, sexista, y de superioridad cultural y genética de las ciencias sociales. El autor recuenta el desarrollo del concepto de la personalidad multicultural y también describe los instrumentos que se dise aron para evaluar procesos de la personalidad multicultural. Considerando la tendencia de la sociedad actual contra la acción afirmativa, el autor mira al futuro con la esperanza de que se volverá a encender la llama de los Derechos Civiles de manera que el multiculturalismo pueda ayudar a preservar el mundo.
Gyroscope-Driven Mouse Pointer with an EMOTIV? EEG Headset and Data Analysis Based on Empirical Mode Decomposition

Abstract: This paper presents a project on the development of a cursor control emulating the typical operations of a computer-mouse, using gyroscope and eye-blinking electromyographic signals which are obtained through a commercial 16-electrode wireless headset, recently released by Emotiv. The cursor position is controlled using information from a gyroscope included in the headset. The clicks are generated through the user’s blinking with an adequate detection procedure based on the spectral-like technique called Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). EMD is proposed as a simple and quick computational tool, yet effective, aimed to artifact reduction from head movements as well as a method to detect blinking signals for mouse control. Kalman filter is used as state estimator for mouse position control and jitter removal. The detection rate obtained in average was 94.9%. Experimental setup and some obtained results are presented.
