Distribution Pattern of Trees in a Hydrological Gradient below the Paraná-Paraguay River Confluence  [PDF]
Sylvina Lorena Casco, Juan José Neiff
American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2013.43A085
Abstract:

Riparian and riverine aquatic plant species have evolved within the context of flowing water habitats for which the flooding and droughts are the forcing factors that shape the community features, either through a positive or negative effect on the ecosystem’s function, according to the timing, frequency and magnitude of such events. In the Paraná floodplain landscape, topographic position is a crude indicator of the position along the complex gradient, but it also includes information about flood/drought periods and trees’ resilience to extreme hydrological phases. We present the occurrence of major tree species in riparian forests of the Paraná River on islands of different topographies in a section of the Paraná River downstream from the confluence with the Paraguay River. Our results suggest that each tree species had a preferred position in the topographic gradient, sites where the observed counts were more frequent. This trees species were more frequent between 2 and 8 m in the topographic position and were affected by 5 and 202 hydrosedimentologic pulses between 1949 and 1999. We suggest that knowledge of the distribution curves of the vegetation species present can help draw possible future scenarios of the river landscape. Future engineering works to alter the hydrological dynamics of Paraná should pay more attention to the distribution of riparian forests because they are indicators of changes at the landscape level and they are the support for the wildlife of the river.

Transvenous right ventricular pacing in a patient with tricuspid mechanical prosthesis
Juan Sierra, José Rubio
Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1749-8090-3-42
Abstract: A 66 year-old woman was admitted to our hospital, because she had an episode of cardiovascular collapse requiring cardiopulmonary resucitation four days after cardiac operation in other hospital. The patient had previously undergone one closed and three open heart procedures. The first operation was a closed mitral surgery by a left thoracotomy. After nine years she needed new surgery because she had mitral stenosis and a mitral comisurotomy was done throught a sternotomy and under cardiopulmonary bypass. Ten years after the second operation, because she had mitral stenosis with extensive calcification of the anterior leaflet and aortic and tricuspid regurgitation, a double mitro-aortic valve replacement was done with two Bjork- Shiley (Shiley Inc – Irvine. CA, USA) prostheses. Also a De Vega tricuspid annuloplasty was performed. In 2002 symptoms of congestive heart failure, dyspnea and severe tricuspid insufficiency necessitated replacement of the tricuspid valve by a CarboMedics Prosthesis (CarboMedics Inc, Austin, Tex – USA). This operation was performed through right thoracotomy. The patient was discharged from the hospital one week later.Four days later, she was admitted to our hospital because she had an episode of cardiovascular collapse requiring cardiopulmonary resucitation. The physical examination was remarkable for elevated jugular venous pressure.Chest radiography revealed the presence of important bilateral pleural effusion and a right ventricle enlargement. The ECG showed atrial fibrillation with a ventricular rate of 35 beats/min. No Digoxin or Beta Blocker treatment was present.Transthoracic echocardiography demostrated a normal function of the three prosthesis and a decreased right ventricular function.The patient who was on an anticoagulant therapy with coumadin, was put on a regimen of heparin. After three days and to avoid a new thoracotomy(Fifth) a left ventricular pacing with an endocardial lead through the coronary sinus was performed. The st

Abstract: due to their inherent instability, the floodable lands adjacent to rivers generally present insurmountable distances between themselves and their contiguous cities. this building, a center for the interpretation of rivers, is located in a high tide zone, rising in order to make way for the current, integrating it with its interior.
La Naturalizacion De La Intencionalidad
Acero,Juan José;
EPISTEME , 2006,
Abstract: in this chapter two philosophical projects put forward in the last two decades that aim at naturalizing intentionality are critically examined. one of them is ruth millikan's, whose main motive is her conviction that both language and thought are biological categories. the other one is jerry fodor's, whose main result is his theory of asymmetrical dependence. moreover, doubt is also cast upon a popular strategy followed in nowadays naturalization projects, namely that of intention based semantics. leaving aside what specific weak spots those projects have, it is suggested that they arise from not paying due attention to the fact the cultural traits, i.e. linguistic norms, infect natural cognitive abilities from the very beginning of human life. it is reasonable then to infer that the only reliable programme of naturalization should be articulated by adding to evolutionary psychology's findings those of develpmental psychology, thus getting rid of the kind of metaphysical reductionism that abets those other projects.
Vida y obra de Eugene-Henri-Paul Gauguin. (1848-1903)
Puigbó,Juan José;
Puigbó,Juan José;
Maceda,Juan José;
El hornero , 2007,
Abstract: the crowned eagle (harpyhaliaetus coronatus) is one of the largest raptors in argentina. it has been recently categorized as endangered, with an estimated population of <1000 individuals. despite its broad geographical distribution in southern south america, its biology and ecology are poorly known. most of the information on this species was based on occasional records of individuals. in this study i provide 110 unpublished observations in la pampa province during 1999-2007. in 1995-2007, 15 active nests were discovered in la pampa province, 9 in mendoza and 2 in formosa. egg laying (of a single egg) extends from august to october, and hatching occurs in november-december. crowned eagle's diet is composed by a large variety of preys (mainly armadillos and snakes) and carrion. the species has been reported in 72 important bird areas (ibas) in argentina, including 10 national parks and 12 natural areas. based on this evidence i suggest bosques teltecas (mendoza) and jagüel del monte (la pampa) as priority areas for research intensification and conservation of the crowned eagle. future research should focus on the estimation of population parameters, on banding and on satellital tracking of individuals. besides, i propose a series of recommendations to avoid nest losses during the breeding season. research should be accompanied by activities involving settlers and the general public so they enhance their knowledge of these birds and collaborate with their conservation.
LA CONSIDERACIóN DE LOS NUEVOS DERECHOS HUMANOS EN LA LEGISLACIóN SOBRE REPRODUCCIóN ASISTIDA
Puerto,Juan José;
Acta bioethica , 2000, DOI: 10.4067/S1726-569X2000000100010
Abstract: coincidental with a large-scale application of human reproductive biomedical techniques in the middle eighties, the world of law reacted by setting up rules for these new technologies. legislation proposed in those years responded to the principle of safeguarding human being's fundamental rights, which by then, were viewed -by the predominant juridical doctrine- from an individualistic perspective with individual social-economic rights (2nd generation human rights ) that overestimated the principle of selfdetermination. all this resulted in laws favouring parents interests over embryo's and future generations' rights. placed in the nineties, the evolution of political-constitutional thinking has contributed to the development of the future generations' human rights (3rd generation human rights), putting an end to previous individualism by taking into consideration new values such as ecologism, respect to nature and its resources, and so forth. the principle of responsibility as well as the principle of precaution in the application of brand new technologies will be juridically demanded; principles that justify the existence of a legislation intended to promote a balance between rights and interests of each one of the participants in assisted reproduction treatments (including son-to-be). this shift in the doctrine of fundamental rights translates into practical consequences in a variety of issues related to the regulation of these reproductive techniques ( embryo cryopreservation, germ cells donors, posthumous reproduction, informed consent, and so forth)
