Abstract: one of the most severe diseases in common bean (phaseolus vulgaris l.) is golden mosaic caused by bean golden mosaic virus (bgmv, genus begomovirus, family geminiviridae). this study aimed to evaluate the influence of different irrigation systems on the incidence and losses caused by bgmv in common bean. the experiment consisted of the evaluation of three irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler and micro sprinkler), installed as 225m2 strips in the experimental area of the federal university of alagoas, rio largo, al. each strip contained 12 plots of 1m2 each, with 20 plants per plot. the experiment was conducted over two seasons: october 2006 to january 2007 and october 2007 to january 2008. the incidence of golden mosaic was evaluated by visual inspection of symptomatic plants, and the asymptomatic plants were tested for the presence of begomoviruses by pcr. for yield evaluations, the weight of mature grains from all plants was quantified, and the average weight per plant in each plot was calculated. the results indicate that drip and sprinkler irrigation resulted in the highest (62.31%) and lowest (16.74%) incidence, respectively, of golden mosaic. there was no correlation between the incidence of golden mosaic and yield. however, healthy plants yielded three times more grain than diseased plants.

Abstract: this article studies the interaction between telemarketing companies, government bodies concerned with worker health (assisted by university researchers) and a union of telephone operators. it reveals a gap between the measures companies take to face their workers' health problems and the reality of this work. using the statements of these actors in a public prosecution service inquiry on labor, as well as the results of bibliographic research on telemarketing operators falling ill, we studied the position adopted by companies vis-à-vis the risks associated with telemarketing work. we concluded, based on the companies' declarations, that they adopt a position of denial of the risk factors that cause telemarketing operators to fall ill, while confronting the government's labor protection requirements, which evidences the insufficiency of the workers' actions and the limitations of government power in this field.

Abstract: the distinction between convective and stratiform precipitation profiles around various precipitating systems existent in tropical regions is very important to the global atmospheric circulation, which is extremely sensitive to vertical latent heat distribution. in south america, the convective activity responds to the intraseasonal oscillation (ios). this paper analyzes a disdrometer and a radar profiler data, installed in the ji-paraná airport, ro, brazil, for the field experiment wetamc/lba & trmm/lba, during january and february of 1999. the microphysical analysis of wind regimes associated with ios showed a large difference in type, size and microphysical processes of hydrometeor growth in each wind regime: easterly regimes had more turbulence and consequently convective precipitation formation, and westerly regimes had a more stratiform precipitation formation.

Silva, Samuel da;Lopes Júnior, V.;Assun??o, E.;
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782004000400008
Abstract: the study of algorithms for active vibrations control in flexible structures became an area of enormous interest, mainly due to the countless demands of an optimal performance of mechanical systems as aircraft and aerospace structures. smart structures, formed by a structure base, coupled with piezoelectric actuators and sensor are capable to guarantee the conditions demanded through the application of several types of controllers. this article shows some steps that should be followed in the design of a smart structure. it is discussed: the optimal placement of actuators, the model reduction and the controller design through techniques involving linear matrix inequalities (lmi). it is considered as constraints in lmi: the decay rate, voltage input limitation in the actuators and bounded output peak (output energy). two controllers robust to parametric variation are designed: the first one considers the actuator in non-optimal location and the second one the actuator is put in an optimal placement. the performance are compared and discussed. the simulations to illustrate the methodology are made with a cantilever beam with bonded piezoelectric actuators.
