Attraction of Neomegalotomus parvus (Westwood)(Heteroptera: alydidae) to cow urine and ammonia

Abstract: the alydid bug parvus (westwood) is not easily detected in the field and the discovery of attractants may be a suitable way to monitor this species. the attraction of n. parvus to traps (transparent, transparent green and yellow) baited with cow urine and ammonia was studied in two field trials. traps were placed near a terrace with pigeon pea plants (cajanus cajan l.). tap water, nacl 10% aqueous solution (w/v), cow urine, and ammonia (nh4oh 1% aqueous solution) were tested as attractants in yellow, transparent and transparent green traps. green traps baited with cow urine caught more bugs than yellow and transparent traps (3.2 and 7.2 times more, respectively), and more bugs than traps of the same color with just water (no captures) or nh4oh solution (14.5 times more). traps baited with ammonia caught more bugs than traps with water: 14.4, 4.7 and 6.7 times more than transparent green, yellow, and transparent traps, respectively, or nacl solution: 3.9, 7.6 and 6.2 times, respectively. both ammonia and cow urine are attractive to n. parvus and may be tested to monitor the bugs in the field.

Abstract: responses of diabrotica speciosa (germar) (coleoptera: chrysomelidae) to a semiochemical trap characteristics were investigated in the field. the trap consisted of plastic bottles with several perforations (0.5 cm diameter and 2.0 cm distance each other) and containing lagenaria vulgaris l. (cucurbitaceae) powder as cucurbitacin (arrestant and phagostimulant) source (0.28%). in common bean fields, transparent green traps caught significantly more males and females beetles than yellow, transparent and white traps. yellow traps caught significantly more females than white traps. transparent green and yellow traps baited with the volatile attractant 1,4-dimethoxybenzene caught 4.08 and 2.72 times more beetles than unbaited, respectively. higher number of beetles was caught by 2l bottle traps than 1, 0.5 and 0.25 ml. in corn fields, transparent green bottle traps caught significantly more beetles in campo mour?o and similar captures were found in londrina field.

Abstract: Diabrotica speciosa is a very important pest throughout Latin America, which management strategies are restrict to chemical control. We revise the usage of baits, containing semiochemicals, as management strategy for Diabrotica spp. Initially, we described the importance of baits for several orders of agricultural importance. The cucurbitacins are basic elements for Diabrotica spp. baits. These chemicals occur in some botanical families, especially Cucurbitaceae. The Carbamate insecticide Carbaril showed the best results for addition in the baits. Flowers volatile substances and pheromones also may be added to the baits to enhance attraction. Commercial baits are available for north-American species. For bait development is necessary to establish plant adherent formulations that promote the control during some weeks. We found in the literature that starch matrix may be suitable for this proposal. Diabrotica speciosa é praga de grande importancia na América Latina, cujas estratégias de manejo restringem-se ao controle químico. A utiliza o de iscas, contendo semioquímicos como estratégia para manejo de Diabrotica spp. é revisada. Inicialmente, descreve-se a importancia das iscas para diversas ordens de importancia agrícola. As cucurbitacinas s o elementos básicos das iscas para Diabrotica spp. Estas substancias ocorrem em várias famílias botanicas, especialmente, Cucurbitaceae. O inseticida carbamato Carbaril apresenta os melhores resultados quando adicionado às iscas. Substancias voláteis de flores e ferom nios também podem ser adicionados às iscas e, desta forma, aumentar sua atratividade. Iscas comerciais existem para as espécies norte americanas. Para o desenvolvimento das iscas é necessário que se estabele am formula es aderentes às plantas que promovam o controle durante um tempo razoável no campo. Pelas informa es da literatura, formula es contendo matrizes de amido podem ter estas características.

Abstract: the contents of metathoracic glands of adults of the stink bug dichelops melacanthus (hemiptera: pentatomidae) were analyzed. compounds were identified by gas chromatography (gc), coupled gc-mass spectrometry and matching retention indices and mass spectra with those of authentic samples. tridecane was the major component followed by lesser and approximately equal amounts of (e)-4-oxo-2-hexenal and (e)-2-octenal. other compounds identified include (e)-2-hexenal, decane, (e)-2-hexenyl acetate, undecane, (e)-4-oxo-2-octenal, dodecane, (e)-2-octenyl acetate, 1-tridecene, tetradecane and pentadecane.

Abstract: several synthetic and commercial analogs of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, a kairomone of diabrotica speciosa, along with other compounds already shown to be attractive to other species of diabrotica, were tested as attractant to d. speciosa. yellow cup traps were lured with the compounds and installed in a common bean field. assessments were conducted 24 h later. 1,4-dimethoxybenzene lured traps caught significantly more beetles than the control traps. captures of traps lured with 1,4-dimethoxybenzene analogs did not differ from the control traps. results showed that position and nature of the substituents on the aromatic ring played a crucial role in the activity of the natural compound. the aromatic ring was also very important to the activity of the kairomone.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the soybean neotropical brown stink bug (euschistus heros) resistance to methamidophos through laboratory bioassays. bioassays were carried out using populations of adults and nymphs of euschistus heros in the last instar collected in soybean crops in paraná state. highest frequencies of genotypes resistant to methamidophos were observed in alvorada do sul, toledo and nova santa rosa, pr. populations from bela vista do paraíso, araruna, campo mour?o, mariluz, cascavel, s?o jo?o do ivaí, and mamboré were more susceptible to methamidophos. however, an increase on resistant genotypes in this locations cannot be discarded.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate the reaction of two cultivars of wheat to the damage caused by adults of the green belly stink bug, dichelops melacanthus (dallas), confined on the culture from the beginning of tillering. the effect of different infestation levels (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 bugs m-2) on the number of tillers m-2, number of spikes m-2, weight of 1,000 seeds (g), and yield (kg ha-1) was evaluated on wheat cvs. ?br 18' and ?brs 193', in londrina, paraná state. the number of tillers m-2 increased linearly on ?br 18' and in a quadratic form on ?brs 193', with the increase of the number of bugs m-2; the number of spikes m-2, the weight of 1,000 seeds, and the yield decreased linearly with the increase of the infestation level on both cultivars. ?brs 193' was the most susceptible to the attack of d. melacanthus, showing a reduction of 254.4kg for each unit of increase in the number of bugs m-2.

Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a rea o de dois cultivares de trigo aos danos causados por percevejos adultos de Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas), confinados sobre a cultura a partir do início do perfilhamento. Foram comparados os efeitos de diferentes níveis de infesta o (0, 2, 4, 8 e 16 percevejos m-2) sobre o número de perfilhos m-2, número de espigas m-2, peso de mil sementes (g) e rendimento (kg ha-1) das cultivares ?BR 18' e ?BRS 193' de trigo, em Londrina, PR. O número de perfilhos m-2 cresceu linearmente para a cv. ?BR 18' e de forma quadrática para a cv. ?BRS 193' com o aumento do número de percevejos m-2; o número de espigas m-2, o peso de mil sementes, e o rendimento decresceram de forma linear com o aumento do nível de infesta o para as duas cultivares. ?Acv.BRS 193' foi mais suscetível ao ataque de D. melacanthus, apresentando uma redu o de 254,4kg para cada unidade de aumento no número de percevejos m-2.
Quantification of fractal dimension and Shannon’s entropy in histological diagnosis of prostate cancer

Abstract: Background Prostate cancer is a serious public health problem that affects quality of life and has a significant mortality rate. The aim of the present study was to quantify the fractal dimension and Shannon’s entropy in the histological diagnosis of prostate cancer. Methods Thirty-four patients with prostate cancer aged 50 to 75 years having been submitted to radical prostatectomy participated in the study. Histological slides of normal (N), hyperplastic (H) and tumor (T) areas of the prostate were digitally photographed with three different magnifications (40x, 100x and 400x) and analyzed. The fractal dimension (FD), Shannon’s entropy (SE) and number of cell nuclei (NCN) in these areas were compared. Results FD analysis demonstrated the following significant differences between groups: T vs. N and H vs. N groups (p < 0.05) at a magnification of 40x; T vs. N (p < 0.01) at 100x and H vs. N (p < 0.01) at 400x. SE analysis revealed the following significant differences groups: T vs. H and T vs. N (p < 0.05) at 100x; and T vs. H and T vs. N (p < 0.001) at 400x. NCN analysis demonstrated the following significant differences between groups: T vs. H and T vs. N (p < 0.05) at 40x; T vs. H and T vs. N (p < 0.0001) at 100x; and T vs. H and T vs. N (p < 0.01) at 400x. Conclusions The quantification of the FD and SE, together with the number of cell nuclei, has potential clinical applications in the histological diagnosis of prostate cancer.
