Abstract: seeds of vegetable crop species always present high commercial value, so the physiological potential must be efficiently evaluated. the controlled deterioration is a recommended test to evaluate seed vigor of small-seeded vegetable crops, such as beetroot seeds. this research was run in order to determine the best controlled deterioration test procedures for beetroot seeds and its relationship with field seedling emergence. seven commercial seed lots of the cultivar top tall early wonder were used. after washing in running water, the seeds were tested for germination, speed of germination, accelerated aging, seedling field emergence, emergence rate and controlled deterioration (41 and 45°c, moisture contents of 22, 24 and 26% and exposure times of 12, 24 and 36 hours). the combination of 41°c/24%/12 hours, 41°c/24%/36 hours, 41°c/26%/36 hours and 45°c/24%/24 hours showed potential to evaluate vigor of beetroot seeds. however, the combinations of 41°c/24%/12 hours or 45°c/24%/24 hours decreased the conduction time of the test.

Abstract: the presence of germination inhibitors in the fruit of beetroot can reduce the stand of crop. the present work aimed to evaluate the interference of immersion period in running water in the physiological performance of the beetroot seeds. seeds from cultivar top tall early wonder were submitted to the action of running water during 0 (control), 1; 1,5; 2; 3; 4; 5 and 6 hours, dried and physiologically evaluated using germination test. washing the seeds during two hours was enough to increase the germination.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate, by systematic review and meta-analysis, randomized studies comparing the prokinetics (domperidone, bromopride, metoclopramide and bethanechol) to placebo in the treatment of gastroesophagic reflux (ger) and gastroesophagic reflux disease (gerd) in children. methods: bibliographic search for randomized clinical trials (medline, embase, biological abstracts, isi/web of science, cinahl, lilacs e cochrane). the primary outcome was the modification of reflux symptoms. other outcomes were: ger-related complications, alterations in control exams, life quality, adverse events and abandon of treatment. results: the metanalysis included four studies on domperidone, two on metoclopramide, and one on bethanechol. no study of bromopride was retrieved. the risk of non-response to the treatment was significantly smaller in children that received prokinetics in comparison to placebo (rr 0.35, 95%ci 0.14-0.88). individual therapeutic advantage regarding placebo was related to domperidone (n=126; rr 0.27; 95%ci 0.14-0.52, nnt 3; i2 0%) and bethanechol (n=44; rr 0.19; 95%ci 0.05-0.55; nnt 2), but not to metoclopramide (n=71; rr 0.63; 95%ci 0.07-5.71; i2 92.2%). conclusions: the evidence for prokinetic use in ger and gerd in children is limited because the few studies report preliminary trials that evaluate short-term responses and show methodological limitations.

Abstract: the vigor test is a fundamental test used to evaluate the physiological potential of produced and commercialized seeds. controlled deterioration was studied as a method to evaluate the physiological potential of beetroot seeds (beta vulgaris). after immersing the fruits in running water, eight seed lots of cultivar top tall early wonder were evaluated as to germination and seedling emergence. the seed water content (swc) was adjusted using the wet atmosphere and moist substrate methods. the controlled deterioration test was a completely randomized design with eight replicates of 25 seeds and was conducted at 45 oc using a swc of 22% or 24% and deterioration times of 12, 24 and 36 hours. the experimental design for seedling emergence tests was also completely randomized but used four replicates of 50 seeds. the data were statistically analyzed for each combination of swc and deterioration period separately and the means compared by the tukey test (p<0.05). simple correlation analysis was run using the data from seed laboratory tests and seedling emergence. the results indicate that swc adjustment should be carried out only using the moist substrate method. physiological potential of beetroot seeds can be evaluated using the controlled deterioration test with parameters of 45 oc, 24 hours and 22% swc.
Essential oils of Toona and Cedrela Species (Meliaceae): taxonomic and ecological implications

Abstract: the essential oils of toona ciliata, cedrela odorata and c. fissilis have been analysed by gc-ms. cedrela contains the main sesquiterpenes formed from the cis- and trans-farnesyl pyrophosphate. in contrast, toona tend to produce mainly sesquiterpenes formed from the trans-precursor. these results show that the affiliation of toona in the tribe cedreleae together with cedrela is still rather problematic. mean electroantennogram responses (eags) to the essential oils from t. ciliata and c. odorata, in hypsipyla grandella females were significantly greater than those obtained for males, suggesting that females would use attractant odours messages from the host-plant (genera of swietenioideae) as search strategy behaviour for habitat location and oviposition.

Abstract: this work addresses the effects of the size, flooding susceptibility and vegetation complexity on ground beetles community structure (coleoptera, carabidae) in forest patches (cap?es) in the sub-regions miranda and abobral of the pantanal, state of mato grosso do sul. thirty pitfall traps were run for six days per month, in six forest patches between october 1998 and october 1999. a total of 2,071 individuals of 64 species were captured. negrea scutellaris (dejean, 1831) and an unidentified lebiini were the most abundant species (472 and 464 individuals respectively). gregarious distribution and great number of species of low abundance could reflect the pattern of resource availability in the tropical regions. species richness in the forest patches was explained only by vegetation complexity, whereas species composition demonstrated no significant relationship with any of the considered variables. this lack of relationship could have been driven by the limited variation in size and vegetation complexity of cap?es; alternatively, it may reflect a stronger effect of species composition change at regional, rather than local scales.

Abstract: with the aim at determining the physiological potential and germinative performance of soybean seeds, two lots were evaluated by germination, cold, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity tests and osmotic stress, at potentials 0.0 (control), -0.1, -0.2, -0.3, -0.4, -0.5, -0.6 and -0.7mpa. the experimental design used was completely randomized, with four replicates of 50 seeds, except to electrical conductivity, with two replicates of 50 seeds. additionally, the germination under osmotic stress was submitted to regression analysis. the osmotic stress in polietileneglycol, in potential equal or smaller than -0.6mpa, is a promising procedure to evaluate the physiological potential of soybean seeds; decreasing values of osmotic stress reduce germination, while osmotic stress level nearby zero may cause seeds invigoration.

Abstract: during the maturation and harvest of soybean (glycine max (l.) merr.) seed the ideal climatic conditions include dryness and lower temperatures. using winter-sown (july to september) soybean we verified the effects of irrigation on the physiological quality of soybean seeds during maturity using a factorial treatment design with three varieties (iac-19, conquista and iac 8-2) and two irrigation interruption times (starting at stage r7 and irrigating until 14 days after stage r8). the samples were taken at stage r7 and at 3 days, 7 days, 10 days, 14 days (stage r8) and 28 days after starting stage r7. we evaluated the percentage germination, vigor using accelerated aging and electric conductivity tests, and the percentage of spotted and imperfect seeds and found that irrigation after stage r7 does not reduce seed quality but can improve the physiological potential of the seeds.
Estudo anatomotopográfico do canal arterial em fetos natimortos dirigido para sua abordagem por videotoracoscopia

Abstract: Este trabalho objetiva realizar um estudo anatomotopográfico do Canal Arterial em fetos natimortos enfatizando o seu comprimento e seu diametro de acordo com o tamanho de cada feto. Além de que, descrevemos as distancias entre este e pontos de reparo importantes para sua abordagem por videotoracoscopia. Estudamos dezesseis fetos natimortos, sendo que oito eram do sexo masculino. O tamanho do feto e os perímetros torácico e cefálico variaram de 42-57, 26-35 e 29-35,5 cm, respectivamente. A média de comprimento e diametro foram 11,06 e 5,56 cm. Distancias entre o Canal e as seguintes estruturas: clavícula-22,13mm, segunda costela-20,75mm, esterno-33,88mm e a.subclávia esquerda-5,30mm. Acreditamos que as medidas apresentadas podem facilitar a abordagem do canal por videotoracoscopia.
Internal root resorption in the maxillary central incisor

Abstract: Introduction: Internal root resorption is a chronic inflammatory process initiated within the pulp space with the loss of dentin. The clastic cells present in the pulp tissue trigger a progressive resorption phenomenon. Case report and conclusion: This paper reports a clinical case of an internal root resorption in the permanent central incisor, at the middle third of the root canal. Because it is asymptomatic,internal root resorption needs an early diagnosis in order to institute the endodontic treatment before the process compromises the mineralized structures of the tooth.
