Abstract: objectives: to analyze the importance of natural killer cells, their killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (kir) and genes in autoimmunity and in the immune surveillance against infectious agents and stem cells transplantation. the characteristics and polymorphisms of the kir genes and receptors in the brazilian population is described. sources: textbooks, review articles and recent scientific articles are cited and listed in the references. summary of the findings: kir genes and haplotypes within a brazilian caucasian population were surveyed and analyzed to assess the future relationship of this system with diseases. of 116 voluntary bone marrow donors, we identified 32 genotypes with frequencies of a and b haplotypes of 51 and 49%, respectively. a comparative analysis was performed between these genotypes and those from other populations. conclusions: innate immunity is an important anti-infectious barrier in newborns. it is independent of both cellular and humoral immunity, can be faster and confers great advantage in early age. at the same time, it stimulates cd8 t lymphocytes to act and amplify the immunological protection network. nevertheless, as in the majority of situations in which immunity is activated, it can also be harmful, damaging the body through autoimmune mechanisms or even, through its absence, creating space for infectious agents to act free. our study of a control group for kir genotype and haplotypes in brazilian caucasoids could be used in future analyse of diseases related to these genes.
A study about the size and power of t-Student and Wilcoxon tests
Emílio Augusto Coelho Barros,Josmar Mazucheli
Acta Scientiarum : Technology , 2005,
A typical problem in statistics data analysis consists in testing a null hypothesis H0 : m =m0 versus an alternative H1 : m 1m0 , where m0 is some specific value of the true parameter m . From a randomsample with normal distribution with mean m and variance s 2 , both unknown, we might use the well known t-student test. As an alternative to the usual t-student test, under the symmetric supposition, we can use the nonparametric Wilcoxon on test (Conover, 1971). In this paper, a Monte-Carlo simulation study was conducted to calculate the empirical size and power of the t-student and Wilcoxon tests. In this study, several instances were considered. For the size of both tests, we considered sample sizes equal to n=10,20,K,90,100 simulated from Normal, Laplace, Uniform, t-Student and Logistic distributions, under the null hypothesis with m = 0 . In the power study, from the same sample sizes and for all distributions, random samples were simulated from the alternative hypothesis consideringm 0 = -1.0,-0.9,K, 0.9,1.0 .
A Bayesian Approach for Stable Distributions: Some Computational Aspects  [PDF]

Open Journal of Statistics (OJS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojs.2013.34031
Abstract: In this work, we study some computational aspects for the Bayesian analysis involving stable distributions. It is well known that, in general, there is no closed form for the probability density function of stable distributions. However, the use of a latent or auxiliary random variable facilitates to obtain any posterior distribution when being related to stable distributions. To show the usefulness of the computational aspects, the methodology is applied to two examples: one is related to daily price returns of Abbey National shares, considered in [1], and the other is the length distribution analysis of coding and non-coding regions in a Homo sapiens chromosome DNA sequence, considered in [2]. Posterior summaries of interest are obtained using the OpenBUGS software.
