Risk factors for indications of intraoperative blood transfusion among patients undergoing surgical treatment for colorectal adenocarcinoma

Abstract: context: identification of risk factors for requiring transfusions during surgery for colorectal cancer may lead to preventive actions or alternative measures, towards decreasing the use of blood components in these procedures, and also rationalization of resources use in hemotherapy services. this was a retrospective case-control study using data from 383 patients who were treated surgically for colorectal adenocarcinoma at "funda？？o pio xii", in barretos-sp, brazil, between 1999 and 2003. objective: to recognize significant risk factors for requiring intraoperative blood transfusion in colorectal cancer surgical procedures. methods: univariate analyses were performed using fisher's exact test or the chi-squared test for dichotomous variables and student's t test for continuous variables, followed by multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression. results: in the univariate analyses, height (p = 0.06), glycemia (p = 0.05), previous abdominal or pelvic surgery (p = 0.031), abdominoperineal surgery (p<0,001), extended surgery (p<0.001) and intervention with radical intent (p<0.001) were considered significant. in the multivariate analysis using logistic regression, intervention with radical intent (or = 10.249, p<0.001, 95% ci = 3.071-34.212) and abdominoperineal amputation (or = 3.096, p = 0.04, 95% ci = 1.445-6.623) were considered to be independently significant. conclusion: this investigation allows the conclusion that radical intervention and the abdominoperineal procedure in the surgical treatment of colorectal adenocarcinoma are risk factors for requiring intraoperative blood transfusion.
DESGASTE POR ABRASIóN DEL ACERO API 5L X65 REVESTIDO CON NIOBIO POR ASPERSIóN TéRMICA A PLASMA Y CON INCONEL 625 POR SOLDADURA

Abstract: El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar y caracterizar el comportamiento mecánico en desgaste del acero API 5L X65, revestido con niobio en comparación al desempe o del revestimiento de la aleación de inconel 625 empleados en la industria de petróleo y gas. El revestimiento de niobio fue obtenido por el proceso de aspersión térmica a plasma de arco no transferido y el revestimiento inconel 625 por soldadura con electrodo revestido. La resistencia al desgaste por abrasión fue evaluada según la norma Petrobras N-2568, en un tribómetro CTER, la rugosidad y el volumen de material desgastado se determinó a través de perfilometría y la dureza de los revestimientos por microscopia Vickers. Los revestimientos obtenidos fueron caracterizados respecto a su morfología por microscopia electrónica de barrido (MEB) y microscopía óptica (MO). La mayor dureza del revestimiento con niobio obtenido puede haber contribuido a reducir la tasa de desgaste en comparación con el revestimiento de inconel 625.
GALVANIZED STEEL PRE-TREATED WITH HYBRID FILM CURED BY UV: INFLUENCE OF PHOTOINITIATOR CONCENTRATION ON THE CORROSION RESISTANCE

Abstract: Several coatings have been proposed as an alternative to replacement processes based on hexavalent chromium. Among them stand out the hybrid films. Some hybrids films, with modified composition by the addition of photoinitiators, can be cured by ultraviolet system (UV). The UV cure is the instantaneous conversion of a reactive liquid in a solid induced by radiation, starting from the polymerization and cross-linking reactions of the chemical species. In order that reaction takes place through the action of UV radiation, it is necessary to add, in the composition of the hybrid film, a substance sensitive to this radiation called photoinitiator. The aim of this work is the preparation and characterization of hybrid films, cured by UV, from TEOS and TMSPMA alkoxide precursors, with addition of photoinitiators with different concentrations (1 and 2%) and without photoinitiator on galvanized steel. The films were characterized concerning the morphology, physicochemical properties and electrochemical behavior. The presence and the increase of photoinitiator concentration on hybrid films improved corrosion resistance of the system.
An Alternative Interpretation for the Moduli Fields of the Cosmology Associated to Type IIB Supergravity with Fluxes

Abstract: We start with a particular cosmological model derived from type IIB supergravity theory with fluxes, where usually the dilaton is interpreted as a Quintessence field. Instead of that, in this letter we interpret the dilaton as the dark matter of the universe. With this alternative interpretation we find that in this supergravity model gives a similar evolution and structure formation of the universe compared with the $\Lambda$CDM model in the linear regime of fluctuations of the structure formation. Some free parameters of the theory are fixed using the present cosmological observations. In the non-linear regimen there are some differences between the type IIB supergravity theory with the traditional CDM paradigm. The supergravity theory predicts the formation of galaxies earlier than the CDM and there is no density cusp in the center of galaxies. These differences can distinguish both models and can give a distinctive feature to the phenomenology of the cosmology coming from superstring theory with fluxes.

Abstract: The dynamics of a cosmological model fueled by scalar field dark matter with a cosh-like potential plus a cosmological constant is investigated in detail. It is revealed that the late-time attractor is always the de Sitter solution, and that, depending on the values of the free parameters, the oscillating solution of the scalar field -- modeling cold dark matter -- mediates between some early stage (say, the radiation-dominated solution) and the accelerating de Sitter attractor.

Abstract: an important pool of chelatable zinc is present in the synaptic vesicles of mossy fiber terminals from hippocampal ca3 area, being zinc released following single or repetitive electrical stimulation. previous studies have suggested different synaptic roles for released mossy fiber zinc, including the inhibition of presynaptic calcium and of postsynaptic n-methyl-d-aspartate (nmda) and gamma amino-butiric acid (gabaa) receptors. the effect of endogenously released zinc on mossy fiber long-term potentiation (ltp) induction also is not yet established. we have investigated the effect of the permeant zinc chelator n,n,n',n'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl) ethylenediamine (tpen) on mossy fiber calcium and on synaptic transmission, before and during the application of ltp-inducing stimulation. we have found, using the calcium indicator fura-2, that single and tetanically-evoked mossy fiber calcium signals are both enhanced in the presence of 20 μm tpen, while the single field potentials are unaffected. as expected, no effect was observed on the single calcium signals or field potentials obtained at the ca3-ca1 synapses, from the ca1 area, which has a lower concentration of vesicular zinc. these results support the idea that at the hippocampal mossy fiber synapses, released zinc inhibits presynaptic calcium mechanisms. a higher concentration of tpen (100 μm) significantly reduced mossy fiber synaptic transmission but did not prevent the induction of mossy fiber ltp, suggesting that zinc is not required for the formation of this form of ltp.

Abstract: this was an exploratory, descriptive study that aimed to correlate alcohol levels detected in fatal victims of traffic accidents, in rio de janeiro city, with the victim’s profile and the characteristics of the accident. the data were retrieved from the registers of the legal medicine institute/iml, through the registers of the medical records of the fatal victims of traffic accidents. compiled and tabulated using the statistics program spss, for the period between january and may 2005, 348 fatal victims of traffic accidents were reported. of these victims, 94 had been tested for alcohol, of these, 83 had levels of alcohol detected, 60.2% presented levels above 0.6g/l blood. the use of alcohol was evident, at levels above and below 0.6g per liter of blood, in the cases of fatal victims of traffic accidents.

Abstract: This paper presents a study of the pteridophytes of six families collected in one of the few remaining fragments of atlantic forest in Pernambuco, NE Brazil. 22 species of 13 genera are recorded most of which live on the ground in shady hollows. The specimens are deposited in the EAN, IPA, UFP and PEUFR herbaria. En el presente trabajo se estudian los pteridófitos de las familias Marattiaceae, Schizaeaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Cyatheaceae, Pteridaceae y Vittariaceae, colectados en uno de los pocos testimonios de selva fragmentada montana, llamada "floresta atlántica", en la Serra do Urubú, Mata do Ageró, municipio de Maraial, estado de Pernambuco, en el NE de Brasil. Se citan, para las seis familias mencionadas, 22 especies incluidas en 13 géneros, las que preferentemente viven como terrícolas en taludes y barrancos sombríos. Los pliegos están depositados en los herbarios EAN, IPA, UFP y PEUFR.
