The Role of Ultrasound and Air Leak Measurement in Assessing Lung Expansion after Thoracic Surgery  [PDF]
Abraham Chavarín, Laureano Molins, Jose M. Mier, Juan J. Fibla, Cristina Izquierdo-Vidal, Cristina Simon, Angela Guirao, Jorge Hernandez
Surgical Science (SS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ss.2015.68052
Abstract: Objective: To determine if lung ultrasound semiology is applicable to the post-surgical hemithorax, and its value in the evaluation of lung expansion in the postoperative period when paired with the use of digital chest drain systems. Methods: Prospective observational study including all patients undergoing thoracic surgery from June 2012 to March 2013. Patients undergoing pleurodesis or hemodynamically unstable were not considered candidates. Final inclusion in the study was based on the availability of digital chest drain system. A transthoracic lung ultrasound evaluation of the anterior and anterolateral windows was performed 20 minutes after chest drain placement. Presence or not of lung sliding and air leak values taken from the digital chest drain system were recorded. Data were submitted to a binomial classification test for analysis. Results: Forty-nine patients were included, yielding a total of 64 hemithoraces. Lung sliding was seen in 53 cases (82.8%), and an air leak value of 20 ml/min or less in 56 cases (87.5%). Sensitivity was 92.8% (95% CI: 82.6% to 97.9%) and specificity 87.5% (95% CI: 47.3% to 97.9%). Positive predictive value was 98.1%, and negative predictive value was 63.6%. Conclusions: Transthoracic lung ultrasound is a useful technique that can complement the use of digital chest drain systems in the evaluation of post-surgical lung expansion. The incorporation of lung ultrasound can greatly reduce the need for chest radiographs in thoracic surgery departments.
Math Anxiety Differentially Affects Boys’ and Girls’ Arithmetic, Reading and Fluid Intelligence Skills in Fifth Graders  [PDF]
Tamara M. J. Schleepen, Hanneke I. Van Mier
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2016.714174
Abstract: Previous research has shown that math anxiety negatively affected cognitive performance in adults and adolescents beyond arithmetic. In children, math anxiety has been reported to impair arithmetic performance mainly in girls, but the effect of math anxiety on other cognitive skills has not been investigated in children so far. To fill this gap, the present study examined the effects of math anxiety on arithmetic, reading and fluid intelligence in 5th-grade children, studying possible gender differences and controlling for the effects of test anxiety. The results indicated marked gender differences in the relation between math anxiety and cognitive abilities, showing that only in girls’ math anxiety was negatively correlated with arithmetic, reading and fluid intelligence. In boys, no significant correlations were found between math anxiety and the three cognitive abilities. Theoretical and practical implications of these results will be discussed.
Primera cita de Essigella californica (Essig, 1909)(Hemiptera: Aphididae) en Argentina

Revista de la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo , 2012,
Abstract: aphids were sampled on several pinus species in some localities of argentina. essigella californica was caught for the first time in argentina, in five provinces. aspects of its biology and distribution are presented. biological and morphologic aspects that allow to separate three genera of the tribe eulachnini (subfamily lachninae) present now in argentina: cinara, eulachnus and essigella) are provided.

Exact Propagator of a Two Dimensional Anisotropic Harmonic Oscillator in the Presence of a Magnetic Field  [PDF]
Jose M. Cerveró
Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2017.84032
Abstract: In this paper we solve exactly the problem of the spectrum and Feynman propagator of a charged particle submitted to both an anharmonic oscillator in the plane and a constant and homogeneous magnetic field of arbitrary strength aligned with the perpendicular direction to the plane. As we shall see in the beginning of the letter, the Hamiltonian, being a quadratic form, is easily diagonalizable and the Classical Action can be used to construct the exact Feynman Propagator using the Stationary Phase Approximation. The result is useful for the treatment of quasi two dimensional samples in the field of magnetic effects in nano-structures and quantum optics. The presented solution, after minor extensions, can also be used for motion in three dimensions, and in fact it has been used for years in such cases. Also it can be used as a good exercise of a Feynman Path Integral that can be calculated easily with just the help of the Classical Action.
A Note on the Lie Algebra of the Invariants in the CBS Nonlinear Equation  [PDF]
Jose M. Cerveró
Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2018.96078
Abstract: In this short note, a particular realization of the vector fields that form a Lie Algebra of symmetries for the Calogero-Bogoyavleskii-Schiff equation is found. The Lie Algebra is examined and the result is a semidirect product of two Lie Groups. The structure of the semidirect product is examined through the table of commutation rules. Two reductions are made with the help of two sets of generators and the final outcome for the solution is related to the elliptic Painlevé P(ξ)-function.

Cuadernos de Medicina Forense , 2002, DOI: 10.4321/S1135-76062002000400003
Abstract: the sudden infant death syndrome (sids) is the principal cause of sudden unexpected death during the post neonatal period in developed countries. it is defined as the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation including a complete autopsy with the relevant analyses, examination of the death scene and a review of the clinical history. recently it was shown that cases of infanticide had been diagnosed as sids because of poor investigation of the circumstances and scene of death. in this report we stress the importance of this part of the post mortem investigation and we summarize some of the guidelines published on the subject.
