Abstract: two groups (g1 and g2) consisting of three flunked children each, ranging from eight to twelve years old, participated in the study. both groups were given the wisc and iar tests at the beginning and at the end of the study. g1 underwent a training of conditional discriminations, with words spoken as sample and words printed as comparison. all the children of g1 learned how to read, with greater increase of iq than the children of g2. in the tests they presented high percentage of reading of the taught and of the generalized words. in iar, both the subjects of g1 and of the g2 showed changes in the measured abilities for the test, especially, laterality, analysis-synthesis and motor coordination, with larger percentage of items altered for the g1 subjects. the results indicate the existence of a relationship between the emergence of generalized reading and increase of iq.

Abstract: the oral counting as a pre-requisite for the acquisition of the concept of number taught through procedure of matching to sample with pre-scholars. to both groups were taught the equivalence relations between number and quantity, whereas the oral counting was taught just to the experimental group (eg). in training were used printed stimuli (numbers, words and figures) and words dictated by the research. after that, both groups' subjects were assessed to different conditions of testing to evaluate the effects the oral counting. lastly, all the subjects (cg and eg) were given the generalization test i and generalization test ii (game of domino), made out of all the relations. the behavior of subjects submitted to the training of oral counting was superior in relation of the subject's behavior that no submitted to that procedure. the importance of oral counting in the acquisition of the concept of numbers related to the setting up of the relations number-quantity is discussed, being the oral counting suggested as a facilitator in the setting up of the equivalence relations of stimuli not directly trained (generalization).

Abstract: this paper intends to examine the behavior of students with histories of school failure (wsf) and students without histories of school failure (wtsf) and the coercive and reinforcing behavior of teacher in relation with each group of students. ten children, ranging 8 to 12 years old, attending a public elementary school, and tree teachers, were the participants of the study. the data was collected through the direct observation of behavior inside the classroom, with report of categories per time interval and the student was the observation focus. the results showed the use of differentiated coercion with wsf, and the positive stimulation with wtsf. the differentiated use of coercive and reinforcing contingencies with both wsf and wtsf students, and its effects in the academic and non-academic behaviors of both groups of students are discussed.

Abstract: this article presents a conceptual analysis on the relationship between the sharpness parameter m, of the rosin-rammler distribution, and the parameter a, its correspondent in the whiten logistic distribution function. the solids split curve is approximated by a rosin-rammler distribution function in the plitt model for hydrocyclone, while, alternatively, the logistic distribution function is adopted for the partition in the lynch-rao model. the results show that the two parameters can be related to the following equation, achieved by nonlinear regression analysis: a = 34,555 x exp [-3,9/ m0,5984]
