Abstract: the objective of this work was to identify sources of resistance to spodoptera frugiperda (j. e. smith) in six corn cultivars (cms-22, cms-35, ag-106, dina-70, ag-510 and cms-36) which were tested under field conditions using a complete randomized block design with four replications. the following parameters were observed: a) foliar damage, obtained through a visual note scale; b) larvae survival, weigth and length, measured 10 days after artificial plant infestation. there were significant statistical differences (p=0.05) among cultivars only in relation to foliar damage, being ag 510 the most resistant cultivar with an average damage of 5.41. the most susceptible cultivars were cms 35 and ag 106 which had an average damage of 8.38 and 7.85 respectively. significant linear correlations (p=0.01) were found between foliar damage and larvae weigth; foliar damage and larvae length; and larvae weigth and larvae length, indicating the possibility of utilization of these parameters to evaluate resistance of corn cultivars to s. frugiperda.

Abstract: two experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, with the objective of identifying sources of resistance in 15 corn cultivars to spodoptera frugiperda. the following cultivars were utilized cms-35 , cms-36, dina-70, cargill-525, pioneer-3210, pioneer-6875, br-201, br-451, ag-106, ag-510, cms-22, contimax-322, br-201, jatin? c3 an?o, cargill-511 e br-106. when the plants had 8 to 10 leaves they were infested with 30 newly ecloded larvae per plant. damage evaluation was made 10 to 14 days after infestation, in both experiments, using a visual note scale from 0 to 9. there were no statistical differences among cultivars for the parameters evaluated damage, weight, length and survival larvae. nevertheless a significant linear correlation was found between weigth x larvae length (n = 0,7776, p = 0,01), demonstrating that these parameters can be utilized in the study of corn resistence to s. frugiperda.

Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2000000600008
Abstract: the isoenzymatic patterns of seven cultivars of elephant grass (pennisetum purpureum) and their seven hybrids with pearl millet (p. americanum), selected by empresa pernambucana de pesquisa agropecuária (ipa), were evaluated to identify the accesses. in polyacrylamide gels, the systems peroxidase (pox), esterase (est), glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (got), leucine amino peptidase (lap), alcohol dehydrogenase (adh), and acid phosphatase (acp), were studied in young leaves at 28 days after uniformization cut. it wasn't observed isoenzymatic activity of adh and the efficiency of the lap system was considered low, which suggest that both can not be indicated for germoplasm characterization. the patterns acp, got, pox and est allowed the identification of the 14 accesses studied, which revealed 9, 3, 13 and 19 different electrophoretic patterns respectively. using the esterase system alone, it is possible to identify the germoplasm bank of elephant grass quickly and accurately.

Abstract: purpose: statins are widely recognized as hypolipemic drugs, but some studies have observed anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, known as pleiotropic. the aims of this work was to study possible anti-inflammatory effects of simvastatin in abdominal sepsis. serum pro-inflammatory cytokines and leukocytes count were determined in an experimental model of abdominal sepsis, using cecal ligation and puncture (clp) in rats. methods: twenty eigth wistar rats weighing 285±12g were randomly divided in: clp/sinvastatin rats (n=7), treated with 10 mg/kg of oral simvastatin 18 and 2 hs berofe clp; clp/saline group rats (n=7), treated with oral saline; group sham/simvastatin (n=7), treated with simvastatin, and group sham/saline (n=7), treated with saline. serum tnf-a, il-1b and il-6 by elisa and total leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and eosinophils were determined 24 hs after clp. anova and tukey test were used considering significant p<0.05. results: it was demonstrated that serum tnf-a, il-1b and il-6 were respectively 364,8±42pg/ml; 46,3±18pg/ml and 28,4±13pg/ml in clp/sinvastatin rats, significantly lower (p<0.05) than in group clp/saline (778,5±86pg/ml; 176,9±46pg/ml; 133,6±21 pg/ml, respectively). the same results were observed in total leukocytes and neutrophils counts. conclusion: these results clearly demonstrate that simvastatin is an effective agent that reduces cytokines levels and leukocyte count in sepsis, independently of its well-known lipid-lowering effects. thus, hmg-coa reductase inhibitors like simvastatin have important anti-inflammatory effects in abdominal sepsis in rats.
