Abstract: a protozoan flagelate has recently been isolated from amaranthus retroflexus. this plant grows near economically important crops in southeastern spain, which are known to be parasitized by phytomonas spp. the present study focuses on the characterization of the energy metabolism of this new isolate. these flagellates utilize glucose efficiently as their primary energy source, although they are unable to completely degrade it. they excrete ethanol, acetate, glycine, and succinate in lower amount, as well as ammonium. the presence of glycosomes was indicated by the early enzymes of the glycolytic pathway, one enzyme of the glycerol pathway (glycerol kinase), and malate dehydrogenase. no evidence of a fully functional citric-acid cycle was found. in the absence of catalase activity, these flagellates showed significant superoxide dismutase activity located in the glycosomal and cytosolic fractions. these trypanosomes, despite being morphologically and metabolically similar to other phytomonas isolated from the same area, showed significant differences, suggesting that they are phylogenetically different species.
Novel Drug Delivery System Based on Docetaxel-Loaded Nanocapsules as a Therapeutic Strategy Against Breast Cancer Cells

Abstract: In the field of cancer therapy, lipid nanocapsules based on a core-shell structure are promising vehicles for the delivery of hydrophobic drugs such as docetaxel. The main aim of this work was to evaluate whether docetaxel-loaded lipid nanocapsules improved the anti-tumor effect of free docetaxel in breast cancer cells. Three docetaxel-loaded lipid nanocapsules were synthesized by solvent displacement method. Cytotoxic assays were evaluated in breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cells treated by the sulforhodamine B colorimetric method. Cell cycle was studied by flow cytometry and Annexin V-FITC, and apoptosis was evaluated by using propidium iodide assays. The anti-proliferative effect of docetaxel appeared much earlier when the drug was encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles than when it was free. Docetaxel-loaded lipid nanocapsules significantly enhanced the decrease in IC 50 rate, and the treated cells evidenced apoptosis and a premature progression of the cell cycle from G(1) to G(2)-M phase. The chemotherapeutic effect of free docetaxel on breast cancer cells is improved by its encapsulation in lipid nanocapsules. This approach has the potential to overcome some major limitations of conventional chemotherapy and may be a promising strategy for future applications in breast cancer therapy.

Abstract: In this naturalistic study, we used a comprehensive neuropsychological battery of tests to assess a sample of schizophrenia patients taking either conventional (n = 13) or novel antipsychotics (n = 26) at baseline and at two years after.Continuous antipsychotic treatment regardless of class was associated with improvement on verbal fluency, executive functions, and visual and verbal memory. Patients taking atypical antipsychotics did not show greater cognitive enhancement over two years than patients taking conventional antipsychotics.Although long-term antipsychotic treatment slightly improved cognitive function, the switch from conventional to atypical antipsychotic treatment should not be based exclusively on the presence of these cognitive deficits.Cognitive disturbances are a core feature of schizophrenia and have been extensively studied in recent years [1]. Cognitive impairment is present before the onset of the illness [2] and is also found in healthy relatives of patients, although to a lesser degree [3]. In addition, this feature is not exclusively secondary to psychiatric symptoms or medication [4]. Cognitive impairment is a better predictor of future functional outcomes compared with positive symptoms [5-7].The positive action of conventional antipsychotics drugs (APDs) on cognition is considered mild or moderate [8] and is limited to certain cognitive domains such as sustained attention [9,10].Regarding novel antipsychotics, this supposed cognitive enhancement would be mediated by their capability to raise the level of dopamine and acetylcholine in prefrontal regions [11]. Characterization of Different Functionalized Lipidic Nanocapsules as Potential Drug Carriers

Abstract: Lipid nanocapsules (LNC) based on a core-shell structure consisting of an oil-filled core with a surrounding polymer layer are known to be promising vehicles for the delivery of hydrophobic drugs in the new therapeutic strategies in anti-cancer treatments. The present work has been designed as basic research about different LNC systems. We have synthesized—and physico-chemically characterized—three different LNC systems in which the core was constituted by olive oil and the shell by different phospholipids (phosphatidyl-serine or lecithin) and other biocompatible molecules such as Pluronic ? F68 or chitosan. It is notable that the olive-oil-phosphatidyl-serine LCN is a novel formulation presented in this work and was designed to generate an enriched carboxylic surface. This carboxylic layer is meant to link specific antibodies, which could facilitate the specific nanocapsule uptake by cancer cells. This is why nanoparticles with phosphatidyl-serine in their shell have also been used in this work to form immuno-nanocapsules containing a polyclonal IgG against a model antigen (C-reactive protein) covalently bounded by means of a simple and reproducible carbodiimide method. An immunological study was made to verify that these IgG-LNC complexes showed the expected specific immune response. Finally, a preliminary in vitro study was performed by culturing a breast-carcinoma cell line (MCF-7) with Nile-Red-loaded LNC. We found that these cancer cells take up the fluorescent Nile-Red molecule in a process dependent on the surface properties of the nanocarriers.
Information-theoretic-based spreading measures of orthogonal polynomials

Abstract: The macroscopic properties of a quantum system strongly depend on the spreading of the physical eigenfunctions (wavefunctions) of its Hamiltonian operador over its confined domain. The wavefunctions are often controlled by classical or hypergeometric-type orthogonal polynomials (Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi). Here we discuss the spreading of these polynomials over its orthogonality interval by means of various information-theoretic quantities which grasp some facets of the polynomial distribution not yet analyzed. We consider the information-theoretic lengths closely related to the Fisher information and R\'enyi and Shannon entropies, which quantify the polynomial spreading far beyond the celebrated standard deviation.
Complexity analysis of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials

Abstract: The complexity measures of the Cr\'amer-Rao, Fisher-Shannon and LMC (L\'opez-Ruiz, Mancini and Calvet) types of the Rakhmanov probability density $\rho_n(x)=\omega(x) p_n^2(x)$ of the polynomials $p_n(x)$ orthogonal with respect to the weight function $\omega(x)$, $x\in (a,b)$, are used to quantify various two-fold facets of the spreading of the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi systems all over their corresponding orthogonality intervals in both analytical and computational ways. Their explicit (Cr\'amer-Rao) and asymptotical (Fisher-Shannon, LMC) values are given for the three systems of orthogonal polynomials. Then, these complexity-type mathematical quantities are numerically examined in terms of the polynomial's degree $n$ and the parameters which characterize the weight function. Finally, several open problems about the generalised hypergeometric functions of Lauricella and Srivastava-Daoust types, as well as on the asymptotics of weighted $L_q$-norms of Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials are pointed out.
