Pereira, Isabela Rosier Olimpio;Bertolami, Marcelo Chiara;Faludi, André Arpad;Campos, Maria Fernanda;Ferderbar, Simone;Lima, Emersom Silva;Aldrighi, José Mendes;Abdalla, Dulcineia Saes Parra;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2003000400005
Abstract: objective: to assess the effect of endogenous estrogens on the bioavailability of nitric oxide (·no) and in the formation of lipid peroxidation products in pre- and postmenopausal women. methods: nox and s-nitrosothiols were determined by gaseous phase chemiluminescence, nitrotyrosine was determined by elisa, cox (cholesterol oxides) by gas chromatography, and cholesteryl linoleate hydroperoxides (ce18:2-ooh), trilinolein (tg18:2-ooh), and phospholipids (pc-ooh) by hplc in samples of plasma. results: the concentrations of nox, nitrotyrosine, cox, ce18:2-ooh, and pc-ooh were higher in the postmenopausal period (33.8±22.3 mm; 230±130 nm; 55±19 ng/ml; 17±8.7 nm; 2775±460 nm, respectively) as compared with those in the premenopausal period (21.1±7.3 mm; 114±41 nm; 31±13 ng/ml; 6±1.4 nm; 1635±373 nm). in contrast, the concentration of s-nitrosothiols was lower in the postmenopausal period (91±55 nm) as compared with that in the premenopausal p in the premenopausal period (237±197 nm). conclusion: in the postmenopausal period, an increase in nitrotyrosine and a reduction of s-nitrosothiol formation, as well as an increase of cox, ce18:2-ooh and pc-ooh formation occurs. therefore, ?no inactivation and the increase in lipid peroxidation may contribute to endothelial dysfunction and to the greater risk for atherosclerosis in postmenopausal women.

Abdalla-Filho, Elias;Bertolote, José Manoel;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462006000600002
Abstract: objective: the study aims to approach forensic psychiatry within different contexts. it endeavors to show how this specific psychiatry science area is influenced by legal and cultural aspects. method: the bibliography reviewed had in view understanding the different ways of how to deal with law within the psychiatric sphere, from a cultural point of view. results: there is a great heterogeneity, of different nature (legal, political, cultural, and religious) that enrich, but at the same time makes difficult, a debate about this issue. conclusions: there are two great obstacles to achieve a good knowledge about the practice of forensic psychiatry all over the world. the first one is represented by a heterogeneity that makes difficult its description in a comprehensible way. the second is the lack of knowledge of the cultural diverse realities. these difficulties should be a stimulus for newer studies of this characteristic. only in this way it becomes possible to gradually increase the comprehension of this issue.
A Clinical Analysis to Detect Risk Factors of Chronic Subdural Hematoma Recurrence  [PDF]
Ahmad Abdalla
Open Journal of Modern Neurosurgery (OJMN) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/ojmn.2019.92014
Abstract: Introduction: The etiology of recurrence of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) after surgical evacuation has not been completely understood until now, but several risk factors for recurrence have been reported. Meanwhile, the definitive risk factors have not been defined until now. Aim of Study: Analyze the potential risk factors, and emphasize preoperative, operative and post-operative ones for CSDH recurrence. Patients and Methods: This study is a prospective randomized clinical trial study including 82 patients with symptomatizing CSDH who underwent burr holes procedure and irrigation with closed system drainage for CSDH at Neurosurgical Department—Assuit University Hospital from July 2016 to July 2018. The possible factor studied for recurrence included age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, liver diseases, Hemoglobin (Hb) level, prothrombin concentration and time (PC and PT), hematoma thickness and internal architecture, number of burr holes and position of drain, duration of drainage, amount of drainage and presence of postoperative residual hematoma on follow up CT brain. Multiple logistic regression analysis is used to assess the predictors of recurrence. Results: This study included 70 males and 12 females. The mean age was 58.9 years (range 34 - 93 years). 6 patients presented with recurrent CSDH. Age above 60 years, Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus (DM), prolong PT, separated and trabecular internal architecture of hematoma, and the thickness of hematoma more than 20 mm in pre-operative CT and postoperative residual hematoma were statistically significant factors for recurrence of CSDH. Conclusion: This information might be helpful in detecting patients with possible high incidence of recurrence and directing for close follow ups and acts that may reduce the incidence of recurrence.
An adapted thermal-gradient block for the germination of photoblastic seeds
Cardoso, Victor José Mendes;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132010000600002
Abstract: this work describes an adapted thermal-gradient block with internal illumination, allowing experiments with light-requiring seeds. the temperature dependence study on the germination of the photoblastic plantago tomentosa seeds was carried out in order to test the performance of the apparatus. with the aid of the model described here, some parameters related to the response of the seeds to temperature could be estimated, showing that the apparatus was suitable for the studies on the temperature dependence of photoblastic seeds.
Desígnios da Lei de Terras: imigra??o, escravismo e propriedade fundiária no Brasil Império
Mendes, José Sacchetta Ramos;
Caderno CRH , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-49792009000100011
Abstract: this paper analyzes the first decades of the transition process from slavery to paid labor in brazil (1840-1870). two factors marked the period: the extinction of the slaves' transatlantic traffic and the need for ever larger numbers of laborers for the brazilian coffee plantations. among the solutions found for this impasse, the experiences that sought to use free foreign workers, such as as partnership contracts and the enganchado ones. complaints and european farmers' revolts against mistreatments in the coffee plantations resulted in prohibition of the continuity of hiring workers to brazil. the promulgation of the lei eusébio of queirós (eusébio de queirós act), that put an end to the slaves' traffic, happened two weeks before the promulgation of the lands act, restrictive of small farmers' access to land ownership. the obtaining of lots started happening through purchase and sale, no more for squatting and cession, as had happened since the colonial times. the measure hindered the access to small rural property and stimulated the expansion of the ownership of large tracts of land in the whole country.
Conselhos de saúde, comiss?es intergestores e grupos de interesses no Sistema único de Saúde (SUS)
Ribeiro, José Mendes;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1997000100018
Abstract: health councils have developed in brazil in keeping with arrangements under the 1988 constitution, and the logic of their political consensus has expanded among interest groups relevant to public policy. collegiate bodies, such as intergovernmental commissions, represent an extension of that logic to executive relationships and also express political intermediation by expertise, following the tradition of the european welfare state. the state technical bureaucracy has thus developed a remarkable role in policy-making and in state-level modeling of interest groups. this article argues that such collegiate bodies should be analyzed through state action and defines two models for health councils. one, the vocal political model, is characterized by a prevalence of outspoken denunciation and an overload of demands on the political agenda. the other, the consensus model, expresses self-limitation amongst interest groups in drafting demands. these models are not hierarchically fixed and are usually linked to the political platforms of interest groups participating in the collegiate bodies.
