Stigma Diagnosis and De-Institutionalization of the Mentally Ill Criminal: A Case Study  [PDF]
Francisco Ramos de Farias, José Mauro de Oliveira Braz
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2014.58095

This study focuses on issues concerning treatment in penal institutions determined by mandatory commitment and the problems relating to the release of adults with mental health disorders who have been committed. The analysis was based on the provisions of Act10216, which determines the end of hospitalization in psychiatric institutions. It then looks at the situation of Maria dos Anjos, a released person currently being sheltered at the Heitor Carrilho Hospital, a custodial institution in the city of Rio de Janeiro. These institutions are spaces of many contradictions, considering their hybrid setting: the coexistence of the medical apparatus, the security apparatus and the legal division. Treatment is often hindered by legal decisions and therefore in conflict with collective health policies. We have raised the following questions: How should these people be released considering the precarious situation of the mental health services? And what will happen to them with the end of these institutions?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Brazil: 1998 national survey
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2000000400002
Abstract: objectives: to assess the epidemiologic characteristics of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als) in brazil in 1998. method: structured clinical report forms (crfs) sent to 2,505 brazilian neurologists from january to september 1998 to be filled with demographic and clinical data regarding any als patient seen at any time during that year. results: five hundred and forty crfs were returned by 168 neurologists. data on 443 patients meeting the criteria of probable or definite als according to el escorial definition were analysed: 63 probable (14.2%) and 380 definite (85.8%). two hundred and fifty-nine (58.5%) of the patients were male, mean age of onset was 52. spinal onset occurred in 306 patients (69%); bulbar onset in 82 (18.5%), and both in 52 (11.7%). twenty-six (5.9%) had a family history of als. two hundred and fifty-nine (58.6%) were seen by private practitioners, and 178 (40.2%) at a hospital clinic. age-ajusted incidence shows a peak incidence at the 65-74 years old range. conclusions: the disease's characteristics are similar to those described in international studies, except for age of onset (brazilian patients are younger). this difference is not confirmed when figures are age-adjusted.

Revista Mal-estar e Subjetividade , 2007,
Abstract: The Post-Industrial Revolution period was labeled by a profound reference to work, in social structure as well as on the construction of modern individuals. With the crisis of the work centered society, some values and categories are rescued and demand a new characterization. The domain of work on the construction of social structure is then questioned and new ideas are born that bring free time, leisure and relaxation as roles on the structural elements of a new social context. Before positioning ourselves about this domain passage, this study discuss and reflects upon such categories, opening a clear possibility of its territorialization on the field of social sciences, and in a special way, on its contribution to a new form of subjective production.

Abstract: This study analyzed the relationship between self-care in subjects who received a blood transfusion in a university hospital with their sociodemographic and health conditions. A descriptive and exploratory research with a qualitative approach was carried out in the Transfusion Ambulatory sector of the University Hospital in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro from July to November of 2014 with a sample size of 12 patients. Data were collected through a questionnaire of semi-structured questions; content analysis was based on the thematic approach. Sociodemographic data from subjects who received a blood transfusion were evaluated with respect to the education they received regarding self-care at home as well as their emotional balance in facing the health-disease process and their perspective on their quality of life. Educating subjects who receive blood transfusions requires that the medical professionals have an understanding of their patient’s socioeconomic and cultural condition. This information will contribute to a better understanding of self-care when blood transfusion is necessary.

Abstract: this work aimed check net melon experimental hybrids performance in two cultivation systems. six experimental hybrids (jab 07#16, jab 07#17, jab 07#23, jab 07#24, jab 07#26, and jab 07#28) and three commercial hybrids (b?nus no 2, louis, and fantasy) were evaluated, in two cultivation systems (soil and coconut fiber cultivation). the statistical design used was the randomized blocks, with nine treatments and four replications, and the data analysis was done together. the evaluations were: fruit weight, productivity, transversal fruit diameter, longitudinal fruit diameter, fruit shape index, transversal locule diameter, longitudinal locule diameter, locule shape index, mesocarp thickness, insertion diameter of the stalk's insertion, soluble solids, ph, vitamin c, husk roundness and fruit firmness. based on the obtained results can be concluded: when the melon was cultivated in coconut fiber all hybrids are recommended, except jab 07#17, while b?nus no 2, fantasy, jab 07#26, jab 07#28, and jab 07#16 hybrids should be cultivated in soil.
Alternation of cowpea genotypes affects the biology of Callosobruchus maculatus (fabr.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)
Lima, Marcileyne Pess?a Leite de;Oliveira, José Vargas de;Barros, Reginaldo;Torres, Jorge Braz;
Scientia Agricola , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-90162004000100005
Abstract: callosobruchus maculatus (fabr.) is an important pest in stored cowpea, vigna unguiculata (l.) walp., with ample distribution in tropical and subtropical regions. the effect of alternation of cowpea genotypes, susceptible (s) and resistant (r), on the biology of (c. maculatus) was studied after four generations. a no-choice test was carried out in a completely randomized design, factorial scheme, with five treatments, four host combinations (rr, rs, sr and ss) and five replications. each replication consisted of 30 grains of each genotype infested by two insect couples. the number of eggs per female was not different within or between combinations, evidencing that the genotypes and their alternation did not affect c. maculatus fecundity. egg viability, however, varied between genotypes and between combinations. in combination rr, the longest duration of the immature stage was verified for genotype it89kd-245; in addition, all genotypes presented the smallest survival for the same stage, resulting in a higher mortality of the pest. the resistance index categorized combination rr as moderately resistant for genotypes it89kd-245, br14-mulato and br17-gurguéia, and as susceptible (s) only for it89kd-260, demonstrating that these combinations were not very adequate for the development of c. maculatus, a fact that was confirmed by the better performance of the pest on the genotype from combination ss, and because of a reduction in its performance when it returned to resistant genotypes.

Revista árvore , 2003,
Abstract: This study describes a simple and promising for in vitro multiplication of Tabernaemontana fuchsiaefolia, a species abundantly found in southern Brazil utilized for medicinal purposes and as a source of compounds that may be used to develop new synthetic drugs. Apical and hypocotyl explants were cultured in MS medium containing different concentrations of the cytokinins benzylaminopurine (BA) and 6-furfurylaminopurine (kinetin), supplemented with phloroglucinol (1, 3, 5-hydroxybenzene) to stimulate growth and shoot proliferation. Cytokinin added to the culture media positively influenced the micropropagation of T. fuchsiaefolia.and kinetin induced more shoots per explant than BA cytokinin. A favorable effect of phloroglucinol on apical and lateral buds from hypocotyls was also achieved in medium containing no kinetin or in all kinetin concentrations tested. Short pulses of auxin 3-indolebutyric acid (IBA) 5.0 mg/l resulted in satisfactory rooting in apical microcuttings. The addition of phloroglucinol to MS medium induced rhizogenesis in 29% of the nodal segments transferred to MS medium in the absence of IBA and in 50% of the nodal segments transferred to MS medium containing 0.5 mg/l IBA and in nodal segments previously submitted to short pulses of IBA.
