Abstract: in seven studied communities of western mexico, triatomine specimens were sympatrically collected, some with atypical morphological characteristics in contrast to pure specimens, which were presumed to be hybrids. more than 200 specimens of meccus pallidipennis and meccus longipennis with brown-yellow markings on dorsal connexival segments were collected in ahuacapán and quitupan. in la mesa, more than 60 specimens similar to meccus picturatus in most morphological characteristics (including size) were collected, although they presented a largely yellowish corium like m. pallidipennis. interfertility was proven between all of the studied wild hybrid specimens, as well as between all the experimental laboratory hybrids. two different phenotypes (m. picturatus and m. longipennis) were obtained from crosses between m. picturatus x m. picturatus and m. longipennis x m. longipennis from the three studied localities in state of nayarit as from la mesita. results support the hypothesis that the subspecific ranking of those triatomines may, therefore, be more appropriate because reproductive isolation has not been developed and complete interbreeding was recorded.
Gutiérrez,José María;
Boletín de Malariología y Salud Ambiental , 2011,
Abstract: the public health problem of envenomings induced by snakebites in latin america and the caribbean is analyzed in this work. this pathology affects predominantly the rural population and has a high impact on regions where the provision of health services is insufficient. the majority of envenomings are inflicted by species of the genera bothrops and crotalus, classified in the family viperidae. there are several laboratories in the region which manufacture antivenoms for the treatment of these envenomings, although the volume of production in some cases does not fulfill the national demand and, consequently, antivenoms have to be imported. a significant body of knowledge has been gained in the taxonomy of the snakes and the biochemistry, toxicology and immunology of venoms, as well as in the preclinical and clinical performance of antivenoms. despite significant advances in the control of this neglected tropical disease in latin america, there are pending tasks in the region, such as: (a) to improve our knowledge on snakes and their venoms; (b) to assess the actual incidence and mortality of snakebite envenomings; (c) to increase the volume of antivenom produced and, in some cases, to improve the quality of antivenoms; (d) to improve the national quality control laboratories; (e) to develop more effective strategies of distribution of antivenoms, especially to remote rural areas where snakebites are frequent; (f) to foster permanent education programs for the health staff in charge of the treatment of these envenomings; (g) to follow up and provide support to people that suffer physical or psychological sequelae as a consequence of these envenomings; and (h) to strengthen community programs aimed at improving the prevention and adequate management of snakebites. this conglomerate of tasks should be approached with a philosophy of solidarity, integration and cooperation in the region, with the involvement of multiple actors and institutions.

Revista de Biología Tropical , 2002,
Abstract: as a tribute to revista de biología tropical in its 50 th anniversary, this review describes some of the main research efforts carried out in the study of the chemical composition and the mechanism of action of toxins present in the venoms of snakes distributed in latin america. venom proteins involved in neurotoxicity,coagulopathies, hemorrhage and muscle necrosis are discussed, together with a description of the inflammatory reactions elicited by these venoms and toxins. in addition, the search for inhibitory substances present in plants and animals that may be utilized in the neutralization of venoms is analyzed. some of the clinical studies performed on snakebite envenomations in latin america are also reviewed, together with the development of technologies aimed at improving the quality of antivenoms produced in the region. toxinology has become a fruitful and stimulating research field in latin america which has contibuted to a better understanding of snake venoms as well as to an improved management of snakebitten patients
Gutiérrez,José María;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2002,
Abstract: the contributions published in revista de biología tropical in the area of biomedical sciences are reviewed in terms of number of contributions and scope of research subjects. biomedical sciences, particularly parasitology and microbiology, constituted the predominant subject in the revista during the first decade, reflecting the intense research environment at the sebool of microbiology of the university of costa rica and at hospital san juan de dios. the relative weight of biomedicine in the following decades diminished, due to the outstanding increment in publications in biological sciences; however, the absolute number of contributions in biomedical sciences remained constant throughout the last decades, with around 80 contributions per decade. in spite of the predominance of parasitology as the main biomedical subject, the last decades have witnessed the emergence of new areas of interest in the revista, such as pharmacology of natural products, toxinology, especially related to snake venoms, and human genetics. this retrospective analysis evidences that biomedical sciences, particularly those related to tropical medicine, were a fundamental component during the first years of revista de biología tropical, and have maintained a significant presence in the scientific output of this journal, the most relevant scientific publication in biological sciences in central america.

También se destacan algunos logros en el desarrollo de tecnologías para la producción de antivenenos, así como en la caracterización de la capacidad neutralizante de estos inmunobiológicos As a tribute to Revista de Biología Tropical in its 50 th anniversary, this review describes some of the main research efforts carried out in the study of the chemical composition and the mechanism of action of toxins present in the venoms of snakes distributed in Latin America.
DESARROLLO DE LAS UNIVERSIDADES PúBLICAS DE LATINOAMéRICA: UNA VISIóN ALTERNATIVA AL MODELO ECONOMICISTA DE RENTABILIDAD (DEVELOPMENT OF PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN LATIN AMERICA: AN ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVE TO THE ECONOMICIST MODEL OF PROFITABILITY)
Abstract: The predominant neoliberal paradigm in Latin America has imposed the concept of economic profitability to all areas of society, including public universities. There is pressure to focus research and teaching efforts in disciplines that predominantly foster economic development. In addition, universities are increasingly pressed to generate a significant part of their own financial resources. This paper questions such narrow conceptualization of university productivity, which excludes essential issues in public universities, such as the promotion of all disciplines, regardless of their economic impact, and the need to consider the social and environmental implications of university work. It is proposed that a more integral concept of institutional development should be pursued in public universities, based on a balan
