Intersection Numbers of Polygon Spaces
José Agapito,Leonor Godinho
Mathematics , 2007,
Abstract: We study the intersection ring of the space $\M(\alpha_1,...,\alpha_m)$ of polygons in $\R^3$. We find homology cycles dual to generators of this ring and prove a recursion relation in $m$ (the number of steps) for their intersection numbers. This result is analog of the recursion relation appearing in the work of Witten and Kontsevich on moduli spaces of punctured curves and on the work of Weitsman on moduli spaces of flat connections on two-manifolds of genus $g$ with $m$ marked points. Based on this recursion formula we obtain an explicit expression for the computation of the intersection numbers of polygon spaces and use it in several examples. Among others, we study the special case of equilateral polygon spaces (where all the $\alpha_i$ are the same) and compare our results with the expressions for these particular spaces that have been determined by Kamiyama and Tezuka. Finally, we relate our explicit formula for the intersection numbers with the generating function for intersection pairings of the moduli space of flat connections of Yoshida, as well as with equivalent expressions for polygon spaces obtained by Takakura and Konno through different techniques.

Ontogenic events and swimming behavior of larvae of the characid fish Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier) (Characiformes, Characidae) under laboratory conditions
Santos, José Enemir dos;Godinho, Hugo Pereira;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81752002000100015
Abstract: the larval ontogeny and swimming behavior of the characid fish salminus brasiliensis (cuvier, 1816) were studied under experimental laboratory conditions, from hatching to yolk absorption. at day 1, the larvae were transparent, with sparse dendrite chromatophores and a well-developed adhesive organ on the head. the retinal epithelial cells were initiating pigmentation. the branchial arches were at the initial phase of differentiation. the larvae were able to perform only vertical displacements and, when resting on the tank bottom, remained in lateral decumbency, in groups of 3 to 15 larvae. on day 2, the mouth was open, with conical teeth, and the digestive tube presented lumen and folded mucosa. the gaseous bladder and pectoral fins also were in differentiation. the larvae performed vertical and horizontal movements, adhered to the water surface by means of the adhesive organ or formed groups of three to six on the tank bottom. on day 3, the adhesive organ turned dorsal, the retina was pigmented, the digestive tube mucosa showed goblet cells, and the yolk sac exhausted. the larvae were now scattering in the water column forming no groups on the bottom.

The occurrence of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus) and Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) in a rural area in Northern Paraná, Brazil and the associated Culicidae fauna
Lopes, José;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81752002000400012
Abstract: to verify the possible occurrence of aedes aegypti (linnaeus, 1761) and aedes albopictus (skuse, 1894) in a rural area in northern paraná, brazil, a water tank was installedon a farm, to work as an artificial breeding site. collections were carried out every 15 days, during a period of 2 years. 12,876 culicidae larvae, belonging to 10 different species, including aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus, were collected, indicating their occurrence.
Lopes, José;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81751999000300018
Abstract: larvae of culex eduardoi, culex bigoti, limatus durhamii and toxorhynchites were collected in a tyre that had been placed in a wood by a river bank. these larvae were present coexisting and in an individualized form. it was observed that toxorhynchites, culex bigoti and limatus durhamii were efficient in reducing the other two species's population. culex bigoti and toxorhynchites showed preference for culex quinquefasciatus larvae, while limatus durhamii preferred culex eduardoi. the most efficient predator was toxorhynchites, and the least efficient was limatus durhamii. the reduction of the preys' population density was statistically meaningful in the face of the three species considered as predators.
