Abstract: the implementation of a quality assurance program in chemical analytical laboratories, that can aid in demonstrate the quality of their results, is an issue of great concern. as a consequence, it is mandatory to give an estimate of the confidence that can be placed on the obtained results. an useful measure of this confidence is the measurement uncertainty and, nowadays, a result without the corresponding uncertainty statement cannot be considered reliable. this paper presents a summary of the most important mechanisms for the evaluation and reporting of the measurement uncertainty. in implementing these principles, it is described the measurement uncertainty estimation associated with the preparation of a uranium elemental reference solution at 2.4 mg.kg-1 from the corresponding certified reference material (in this example at 1003 mg.kg-1).

Abstract: the intensive use of land for the cultivation of sugarcane significantly modifies the physical properties of the soil. therefore, the objective was to evaluate the effect of sugarcane management with mechanized harvesting on the aggregation of a typical oxisol with a clay-like texture located in guariba, s?o paulo. with the sugarcane harvested mechanically and without prior burning, four different situations (cycles) were selected: plant cane, and first, second and third-cutting ratoon cane. layers at a depth of 0 to 0.1, 0.1 to 0.2 and 0.2 to 0.3 m were evaluated for weighted mean diameter of the aggregates (wmd), and levels and stocks of organic carbon in the soil. management of cane sugar with mechanized harvesting influences the soil wmd, whose values are greater for the plant cane and go down over the years. with the increase in soil depth, carbon stocks are more related to soil bulk density than to the carbon content.

Abstract: the evaluation of environmental determinants that interfere in human health in the scope of municipal responsibilities has not spread yet in brazil. however, the dramatic climatic change and the evolution of the brazilian society demand that the public monitoring of the government's actions toward "healthy cities" is effectively valued. this paper presents the "index of environmental performance" as a tool for promoting public actions transparency in the spheres of the environment and quality of life. the objective of this index is to allow environmental benchmarking between municipalities of the campinas metropolitan region. with this purpose, a quantitative instrument was developed to support the monitoring of municipal responsibilities concerning the environment. this article presents the "index of environmental performance" as a second generation index that aims to condense relevant information about the environment and quality of life in the municipal scope.

Abstract:
We investigated the effects of formulations based on phosphite products on gas exchange and activity of antioxidant enzymes in coffee plants. Seedlings of the Mundo Novo cultivar were submitted to various treatments composed of different formulations of with potassium phosphite (ADB 120), manganese phosphite (Reforce Mn), and fungicide (PrioriXtra®). For coffee seedlings, the combination of potassium phosphite and citrus by-products, isolated or in a combination with other products elicited the antioxidant system. Besides the high activity of antioxidant enzymes, the photosynthetic rates were higher than other treatments. The better performance of coffee seedlings treated with those formulations occurred even in absence of pathogens.
Work Capacity of the Elderly: Assuming An-other Social Identity in the Contemporary World  [PDF]

Abstract: This is a theoretical study on the work capacity of elderly people based on the Social Identity Theory—SIT. In that perspective, work capacity can be considered as the result of a dynamic process. It refers to the worker’s skills to execute professional activities according to the job requirements and his/her health condition. The SIT aims to highlight the existing impact on people’s behavior when they find themselves members of social categories and, therefore, it involves the operation of three psychological processes, which are: social categorization, social identification and social comparison. Thus, one can assume that society characterizes the elderly people as belonging to the retired group, and from a capitalist perspective, considers these people as unproductive. Their identity is linked to workers who are active in the job market; in addition, the chronological determinant of age does not impede elderly people from continuing in the job market. When elderly people are considered capable of developing their activities, whether professionally or not, and start to play new social roles, the start of the transformation in the conception of old age is perceived. In view of this panorama, a Conceptual Theoretical base is proposed, aiming to locate the phenomenon “work capacity” inside the aging process as this capacity is centered on the advanced activities of daily living.

Abstract: the suitability of bovine and swine teeth has been evaluated when they are used as substitutes for extracted human teeth in varied researches. this study evaluated in vitro the marginal microleakage in human, bovine and swine enamel. cubic cavities (2 x 2 x 2 mm3) were prepared in enamel blocks from human, swine and bovine teeth. the cavities were filled with composite resin and conventional glass-ionomer cement. all the samples were thermocycled for 1,000 cycles (5 ± 2°c - 55 ± 2°c) and immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 12 hours. the microleakage was quantified by a spectrophotometric technique. the results were statistically analyzed using anova and tukey's test. the glass-ionomer cement presented significantly higher leakage means (μg/ml ± sd) than the composite resin for all substrates (0.0695 ± 0.01313 vs. 0.0471 ± 0.0163, p < 0.01). no significant differences were found between bovine and swine enamel (0.0668 ± 0.0246 vs. 0.0674 ± 0.0286); however, both presented statistically higher leakage means than human enamel (0.0407 ± 0.0195, p < 0.01). it was concluded that the microleakage pattern was affected by substrates, and that bovine and swine substrates allow higher marginal leakage than human substrates. the results indicate there should be precaution in the substitution of human substrate in laboratory studies of microleakage.
