Abstract: Brazil is the world largest producer of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) leading to a great generation of residues such as bagasse and straw, which represent two thirds of sugarcane energetic potential. Regarding these residues energetic potential, it is interesting to study their application in biorefinery processes. Thus, this work aimed at performing a chemical characterization of sugarcane straw and bagasse from RB867515 cultivar grown in Rio Grande do Sul-Brazil aiming at their use as feedstock in biorefinery processes. The obtained results were compared to data from other states and it was possible to conclude that edaphoclimatic conditions of Rio Grande do Sul have little influence in sugarcane residues chemical composition. Sugarcane bagasse presents larger potential for energetic use because of its volatiles content (74.82%) slightly higher than straw (68.90%), besides its high lignin content (21.85%) and higher calorific value (18.70 MJ/kg). Both sugarcane residues produced in Rio Grande do Sul have potential use as substrate in the obtainment of high value-added products from their cellulosic fractions (41.30% and 37.25%, respectively). The evaluation of energetic and chemical potential of sugarcane bagasse and straw produced in Rio Grande do Sul leads to the conclusion that these materials have high potential for use as feedstock in biorefineries.

Abstract: crude soybean oil is one of the vegetable oils that have potential for use as fuel for diesel engines. soybean oil is renewable, and is safe and easy to handle. at room temperature crude oil has a viscosity about ten times higher than that of diesel oil. to lower soybean oil's viscosity to the acceptable levels a heating temperature at least 60°c is needed or blending with diesel fuel. the objective of this study was evaluating the soybean oil and blends performance as a fuel for diesel engines. on both crude soybean oil and soybean oil blends were used pre-heating temperature levels on the range between 57°c and 68°c, before fuel pump. the performance of the fuel blends were evaluated in a single cylinder indirect injection diesel engine and compared with the performance with diesel fuel. engine tests (short term) were conducted at a range speed from 1800 to 2800rpm under full load conditions on hydraulic absorption brake. the tests performed at 68°c showed always the best values of torque, power and specific fuel consumption that the tests at 57°c. the best experiment results were obtained with the blend containing 70% soybean oil and 30% diesel fuel, heated at 68°c.

Abstract: abstract this study aim to investigate, based on the internationalization of companies' theories, the ways of integration into the industries of shoes' foreign market from the city of franca, s?o paulo, and the current situation of these companies in the process of internationalization of its activities. questionnaires were sent to two hundred and eight companies that make up the universe of small, medium and large footwear industries in the city, with a return of seventy percent. the results show that they follow a strategy of gradual integration into the international market, in line with the literature on the process of internationalization. most of them are still in the early stages of this process. the main causes for the slow development of these businesses in the international market are the use of intermediaries in the marketing, lack of own brands and the lack of development of their own channels of distribution abroad.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2002000200003
Abstract: objective: to evaluate the characteristics of the patients receiving medical care in the ambulatory of hypertension of the emergency department, division of cardiology, and in the emergency unit of the clinical hospital of the ribeir?o preto medical school. methods: using a protocol, we compared the care of the same hypertensive patients in on different occasions in the 2 different places. the characteristics of 62 patients, 29 men with a mean age of 57 years, were analyzed between january 1996 and december 1997. results: the care of these patients resulted in different medical treatment regardless of their clinical features and blood pressure levels. thus, in the emergency unit, 97% presented with symptoms, and 64.5% received medication to rapidly reduce blood pressure. in 50% of the cases, nifedipine sl was the elected medication. patients who applied to the ambulatory of hypertension presenting with similar features, or, in some cases, presenting with similar clinically higher levels of blood pressure, were not prescribed medication for a rapid reduction of blood pressure at any of the appointments. conclusion: the therapeutic approach to patients with high blood pressure levels, symptomatic or asymptomatic, was dependent on the place of treatment. in the emergency unit, the conduct was, in the majority of cases, to decrease blood pressure immediately, whereas in the ambulatory of hypertension, the same levels of blood pressure, in the same individuals, resulted in therapeutic adjustment with nonpharmacological management. these results show the need to reconsider the concept of hypertensive crises and their therapeutical implications.
