Revista árvore , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622003000400007
Abstract: the objective of this work was to analyze the accuracy of piling factor estimates using digital photography and software especially developed for this purpose. six trucks carrying five piles each, owned by acesita energética ltd., were used in this research. the analysis revealed that the average difference between the factors determined by the photographic method and the actual factors was approximately 3.2%, with a tendency for over estimation of the values obtained by the photographic method. the "t" test analysis suggested that the differences observed between these factors were mainly due to the the poor piling up of the wood.

Abstract: this paper present a thermomechanical study of actuators in form of helical springs made from shape memory alloy wires that can work as actuator and/or as sensor. these abilities are due to the martensitic transformation. this transformation is a diffusionless phase transition that occurs by a cooperative atomic rearrange mechanism. in this work, helical spring actuators were manufactured from cu-zn-al shape memory alloy wires. the springs were submitted to constant tensile loads and thermal cycles. this procedure allows to determine thermoelastic properties of the shape memory springs. thermomechanical properties were analyzed during 50 thermal cycles in the temperature range from 20 to 130 °c. results of variations in critical transformation temperatures, thermoelastic strain and thermal hysteresis are discussed based on defects rearrangement and martensitic transformation theory.
A review of techniques for spatial modeling in geographical, conservation and landscape genetics

Abstract: most evolutionary processes occur in a spatial context and several spatial analysis techniques have been employed in an exploratory context. however, the existence of autocorrelation can also perturb significance tests when data is analyzed using standard correlation and regression techniques on modeling genetic data as a function of explanatory variables. in this case, more complex models incorporating the effects of autocorrelation must be used. here we review those models and compared their relative performances in a simple simulation, in which spatial patterns in allele frequencies were generated by a balance between random variation within populations and spatially-structured gene flow. notwithstanding the somewhat idiosyncratic behavior of the techniques evaluated, it is clear that spatial autocorrelation affects type i errors and that standard linear regression does not provide minimum variance estimators. due to its flexibility, we stress that principal coordinate of neighbor matrices (pcnm) and related eigenvector mapping techniques seem to be the best approaches to spatial regression. in general, we hope that our review of commonly used spatial regression techniques in biology and ecology may aid population geneticists towards providing better explanations for population structures dealing with more complex regression problems throughout geographic space.

Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892001000700003
Abstract: objective. the objective of this study was to investigate whether routine medical testing before cataract surgery reduces the rate of complications during the perioperative period in adults. methods. the study was carried out in an academic medical center in brazil, between 10 february 2000 and 10 january 2001. the scheduled cataract operations were randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1) to be preceded by routine testing (the "routine-testing group") or 2) not to be preceded by routine medical testing (the "selective-testing group"). if the patient was assigned to the selective-testing group, it was requested that no preoperative testing be performed unless the patient presented with a new or worsening medical problem that would warrant medical evaluation with testing. in the case of patients assigned to the routine-testing group, three tests were requested: a 12-lead electrocardiogram, a complete blood count, and measurements of serum glucose. results. the sample of 1 025 patients scheduled to undergo cataract surgery was comprised of 512 assigned to the routine-testing group and of 513 assigned to the selective-testing group. the two groups had similar proportions of operations canceled and not subsequently rescheduled, 2% in each group. the cumulative rate of medical events was similar in the two groups, 9.6% in the routine-testing group and 9.7% in the selective-testing group (p = 0.923). the types of medical events were also similar in both groups. discussion. the results of this study suggest that routine medical testing before cataract surgery does not reduce the rate of complications during the perioperative period. the results also suggest it would be more efficient not to request routine preoperative tests unless indicated by patient history or physical examination.
VISCERAL LARVA MIGRANS AND TROPICAL PYOMYOSITIS: A CASE REPORT
LAMBERTUCCI, Roberto;RAYES, Abdunnabi;SERUFO, José Carlos;TEIXEIRA, Daniela Moura;GERSPACHER-LARA, Rogério;NASCIMENTO, Evaldo;BRASILEIRO-FILHO, Geraldo;SILVA, Ana Cristina;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651998000600008
Abstract: we report a case of tropical pyomyositis in a boy who presented with a severe febrile illness associated with diffuse erythema, and swelling in many areas of the body which revealed on operation extensive necrotic areas of various muscles that required repeated débridement. the patient gave a history of contact with dogs, and an elisa test for toxocara canis was positive. he also presented eosinophilia and high serum ige levels. staphylococcus aureus was the sole bacteria isolated from the muscles affected. we suggest that tropical pyomyositis may be caused by the presence of migrating larvae of this or other parasites in the muscles. the immunologic and structural alterations caused by the larvae, in the presence of concomitant bacteremia, would favour seeding of the bacteria and the development of pyomyositis.

Gonzalez, Cezar Henrique;Oliveira, Carlos Augusto do Nascimento;Pina, Euclides Apolinário Cabral de;Urtiga Filho, Severino Leopoldino;Araújo Filho, Oscar Olimpio de;Araújo, Carlos José de;
Materials Research , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-14392010000300008
Abstract: this article studies changes observed on the r-phase thermoelastic behavior in a near-equiatomic ti-ni shape memory alloy. three kinds of procedures have been performed: different treatments, thermomechanical cycling under constant loading in shape memory helical springs and thermal cycling in as-treated and trained samples. several heat treatments were carried out to investigate evolution of the r-phase by differential scanning calorimetry (dsc). a heat treatment was chosen on which r-phase is absent. shape memory springs were produced and submitted to a training process in an apparatus by tensioning the springs under constant loading. thermal cycling in dsc was realized in as-treated and trained samples. several aspects of one-step (b2→b19') and two-steps (b2→r→b19') martensitic transformations and r-phase formation and their evolution during tests were observed and discussed.

Abstract: this paper presents the development and results of field tests of a digital power system stabilizer (pss), designed for the damping of electromechanical oscillations in interconnected systems. experimental tests were performed in a 350 mva hydrogenerator unit, of the tucurui power plant. the pss damper control law was embedded in a digital hardware system based on a digital signal controller (dspic 30f5011). the structure of the control law is in discrete time rst canonical form, and the controller parameters were calculated using the pole shifting technique. for purposes of the controller design, the dynamics of the plant, in the considered operating point, was represented by a parametric model, which was estimated from data measured in the field. the experimental results showed an excellent performance of the damping of electromechanical modes observable uhe tucurui by digital pss.
