A Escola e a Diversidade Cultural: Algumas Notas sobre a Educa o multicultural em Portugal. The School and Cultural Diversity: Notes on Multicultural Education in Portugal
José Carlos Pina Almeida
Education Policy Analysis Archives , 2006,
Multiculturalism, as a political project, has captured much attention in recent decades. Multicultural education, in particular, has been often viewed as the ideal way to facilitate interaction between cultures and to achieve more effective equality of opportunities and, therefore, a fairer society. But it has also been involved in much controversy. We start this article by reviewing some of the debates around the multicultural paradigm. We will then turn our attention to the Portuguese case. In particular we will explore the way the view of the Portuguese history and culture as a humanist, universalist and non-racist one, has influenced the way the education system deals with the growing cultural diversity in the Portuguese society.

O ensino de línguas no Brasil de 1978: e agora?
José Carlos Paes de Almeida Filho
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2001,
Abstract: The year of 1978 saw the staging of the first academic event devoted to communicative language teaching in Brazil. The author traces his personal protagonism in communicative movement that is launched on that date. The article, then attempts to outline the still very recent history of the communicative ideas for language teaching in the country, reestablishing its foundations, potential and main obstacles for not deepening its roots and blossoming in the country's language teaching and applied research scenes.
McCammond's normal forms for free aperiodic semigroups revisited
Jorge Almeida,José Carlos Costa,Marc Zeitoun
Computer Science , 2014, DOI: 10.1112/S1461157014000448
Abstract: This paper revisits the solution of the word problem for $\omega$-terms interpreted over finite aperiodic semigroups, obtained by J. McCammond. The original proof of correctness of McCammond's algorithm, based on normal forms for such terms, uses McCammond's solution of the word problem for certain Burnside semigroups. In this paper, we establish a new, simpler, correctness proof of McCammond's algorithm, based on properties of certain regular languages associated with the normal forms. This method leads to new applications.
Auditoria e earnings management: estudo empírico nas empresas abertas auditadas pelas big four e demais firmas de auditoria
Almeida, José Elias Feres de;Almeida, Juan Carlos Goes de;
Revista Contabilidade & Finan?as , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-70772009000200005
Abstract: this paper investigates the relations between auditing firms and their ability to mitigate earnings management. in this context, we analyze if discretionary accruals of publicly-traded companies audited by the "big four" (deloitte touche tohmatsu, ernst & young, kpmg and pricewaterhousecoopers) and other auditing firms are statistically different. the final sample consists of 1,414 observations collected from the 1999-2005 period: 897 observations for publicly-traded companies audited by the "big four" and 517 representing other publicly-traded companies audited by other firms. the information content in the database was obtained from economatica software and "divulga??o externa" available at the bovespa website to obtain information from auditing firms. we used ks model with instruments and non-parametric tests to verify the difference in discretionary accruals between these groups of firms. the results indicate that companies audited by the "big four" have a lower level of discretionary accruals than companies audited by other auditing firms, suggesting the capacity to mitigate earnings management. additionally, we verified that there is little research in this subject in brazil.
Proposal for an Ultrasonic Tool to Monitor the Osseointegration of Dental Implants
Marina Storani De Almeida,Carlos Dias Maciel,José Carlos Pereira
Sensors , 2007, DOI: 10.3390/s7071224
Abstract: The longevity of dental implants depends on osseointegration, which providesload-bearing capacity without putting the prosthesis at risk from micromotions at theimplant-bone interface. This research involved an analysis of the viability of an ultrasonicevaluation tool to quantify osseointegration. Ultrasonic transmission is directly dependenton the difference between the acoustic impedance of materials in intimate contact witheach other. The closer their acoustic impedances the more intense their transmission. Therefore, an analysis of the ultrasonic echoes would presumably allow for a quantitativeevaluation of the bone tissue that has grown into the pores of the implant. In addition, theliterature reports that bone fracture healing can be accelerated by the application of acontrolled low-amplitude mechanical stimulus on the site of the lesion. In fact, acousticpressure waves of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound are reportedly a secure technique forpromoting mechanical stimulus without impairing the healing process. Many experimentaland clinical trials have confirmed that daily transcutaneous ultrasound applications on theinjured site are beneficial to the enhancement of fractured bone. This proposal aims tobring together the characteristics of ultrasound propagation and the positive effect ofultrasound on bone growth into a single tool that quantitatively monitors the evolution ofthe osseointegration process. The viability of a device with these features was investigatedthrough simulations and experimentally. The initial simulations were conducted to explorethe influence of waveguide shapes on the tool’s sensitivity to changes in the implantsupporting media. The waveguides were designed in two parts, one consisting of a screw-shaped part to attach to the implant and the other a conical or step-shaped part to which the ultrasonic source was fixed in the first simulations. The step-shaped waveguide proved to be the more sensitive; intermediate stages of the osseointegration process were simulated and experiments were conducted with the step-shaped aluminum waveguide attached to a cylindrical aluminum nut embedded at different depths, so that the results obtained were only due to lateral attachment of the parts. These devices indicated that the transmission of ultrasound through the lateral surface of the implant by dilatational waves could render this tool suitable for monitoring the osseointegration of dental implants.
A Tool for Single-Fault Diagnosis in Linear Analog Circuits with Tolerance Using the T-Vector Approach
José A. Soares Augusto,Carlos Beltrán Almeida
VLSI Design , 2008, DOI: 10.1155/2008/630951
Abstract: In previous works of these authors, a technique for doing single-fault diagnosis in linear analog circuits was developed. Under certain conditions, one of them assuming nominal values for the circuit parameters, it was shown that only two measurements taken on two selected circuit nodes, at a single frequency, were needed to detect and diagnose any parametric fault. In this paper, the practical value of the technique is improved by extending the application to the diagnosis of faults in circuits with parameters subject to tolerance. With this in mind, single parametric faults with several strengths are randomly injected in the circuit under study and, afterwards, these faults are diagnosed (or the diagnosis fails). Results are reported on a simple active filter. Conclusions are drawn about the robustness and effectiveness of the technique.
Efeitos da uréia coberta com enxofre sobre a perda de nitrogênio por lixivia??o em um latossol roxo

Anais da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz , 1980, DOI: 10.1590/S0071-12761980000200009
Abstract: an experiment was set out to study nitrogen losses in a latosolic b terra roxa after sulfur-coated ureua (scu) and non-coated urea were applied in three different doses and ph adjusted to 6.5 and in a natural soil ph. higher losses of nitrogen (n-nh+ + n-no-) by leaching occured at higher fertilizer doses, but scu reduced those losses through slow release of the elemenent. nitrogen leaching increased with soil ph independently of the fertilizer used; howeverm no influence of the soil ph on n liberation of scu pellet was observed.

Abstract: silicon carbide is an important structural ceramic and finds applications as abrasives, as a refractory and in automotive engine components. this material can attain high densities during liquid phase sintering if suitable additives are used. silicon carbides containing silica, alumina and rare earth oxides have suitable characteristics to promote liquid phase sintering. in this paper, the sintering behavior of silicon carbide ceramics with additives based on the (sio2-re2o3-al2o3) system (re = y, dy) has been studied. samples with different compositions and containing 90 vol.% sic were sintered in a dilatometer at 1950 °c/1h and in a graphite resistance furnace from 1500 °c/1h up to 1950 °c/1h. the shrinkage behavior as a function of rare earth oxide used and additive composition was also studied. the sintered materials were characterized by density and weight loss measurements. the crystalline phases were identified by x-ray diffraction analysis. the sintering kinetics of these materials can be related to the formation of secondary crystalline phases.

Abstract: in many 'in-vivo' and 'in-vitro' studies, the behavior of calcium phosphate ceramics like b - tricalcium phosphate in biological environments has been reported to be predictive and positive. in terms of bone tissue growth, these ceramics are attractive biomaterials due to their porous microstructures. to obtain biomaterial quality ceramics, in this investigationb- tcp porous ceramics were prepared by a special consolidation method with albumin as a foam generating agent. this technique enables a variety of formats with complex geometries to be prepared. to obtain porous samples using albumin, heat had to be introduced into the system during the consolidation stage. after consolidation, the samples were sintered at 1250 °c for 30 minutes and characterized using x ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy and mercury porosimetry. the foams that were obtained by this method exhibited spherical and interconnected pores, characteristics desirable in biomedical implants.
