Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-43662009000200015
Abstract: this paper presents a study of the influence of roof tiles made of recycled long-life packaging (brand-name ibaplac?) on the thermal comfort of zootechnical facilities. the research was conducted at unesp's experimental campus at dracena, state of s?o paulo, brazil. four prototypes were built, each with an area of 28 m2. one prototype was covered with roof tiles made of recycled long-life packing material and three reference prototypes were roofed with ceramic tiles, ceramic tiles painted white and fiber/cement tiles (brasilit?), respectively. black globe thermometers and dry and wet bulb thermometers were installed inside the prototypes. temperatures inside the structures were recorded in the summer of 2006/2007 over a 90-day period. a descriptive statistical analysis was made, based on the mean values of black globe temperature and humidity index, radiant thermal load and temperature-humidity index of the period. the results obtained indicated that the thermal behavior of the recycled tile was similar to that of the ceramic tiles.

Abstract: Fire has become an increasingly important disturbance event in south-western Amazonia. We conducted the first assessment of the ecological impacts of these wildfires in 2008, sampling forest structure and biodiversity along twelve 500 m transects in the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve, Acre, Brazil. Six transects were placed in unburned forests and six were in forests that burned during a series of forest fires that occurred from August to October 2005. Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) calculations, based on Landsat reflectance data, indicate that all transects were similar prior to the fires. We sampled understorey and canopy vegetation, birds using both mist nets and point counts, coprophagous dung beetles and the leaf-litter ant fauna. Fire had limited influence upon either faunal or floral species richness or community structure responses, and stems <10 cm DBH were the only group to show highly significant (p = 0.001) community turnover in burned forests. Mean aboveground live biomass was statistically indistinguishable in the unburned and burned plots, although there was a significant increase in the total abundance of dead stems in burned plots. Comparisons with previous studies suggest that wildfires had much less effect upon forest structure and biodiversity in these south-western Amazonian forests than in central and eastern Amazonia, where most fire research has been undertaken to date. We discuss potential reasons for the apparent greater resilience of our study plots to wildfire, examining the role of fire intensity, bamboo dominance, background rates of disturbance, landscape and soil conditions.

Abstract: purpose: to assess the use of antenatal corticosteroid (ac) by mothers and its repercussion on the birth conditions of preterm babies at the eight university neonatal units belonging to the brazilian network of neonatal research. methods: an observational prospective cohort study. all 463 pregnant women with a gestational age (ga) of 23 to 34 weeks and their 514 newborn babies were evaluated during the period from august 1 to december 31, 2001. the data were obtained by maternal interview, by the analysis of the medical records and by the follow-up of the newborn infants, and analyzed statistically using c2, mann-whitney and anova tests and multiple logistic regression, with the level of significance set at 0.05. results: 60.1% (282/463) of the pregnant women (a variation from 12.5 to 87.3% among units) received at least one ac dose. the ac use was directly associated with the number of prenatal visits, with maternal hypertension and with the antenatal use of tocolytic agents. babies from treated pregnant women presented higher birth weight (1,379±421 vs 1,244±543 g), longer gestational age (30.9±2.0 vs 29.5±3.5 weeks), better apgar scores at the 1st and 5th minute, and a reduced need for intervention in the delivery room. the use of ac, the ga and a baby small for ga independently improved the birth conditions. conclusions: at most centers, ac was administered at frequencies below the desired ones, and in 50% of cases in an inadequate manner. treatment was applied more to mothers who received appropriate prenatal care and was associated with better birth conditions.

Interruption of recently induced immune responses by oral administration of antigen

Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X1998000300008
Abstract: interest in oral tolerance has been renewed in the last few years as a possibility of intervention in human autoimmune diseases. an obstacle in this direction is that, although easily induced in animals virgin of contact with the antigen, oral tolerance becomes hard to induce in previously immunized animals. the present results show that there is an early period after primary immunization in which prolonged oral exposure to the antigen may arrest ongoing immune responses. beyond this period, oral exposures to the antigen become ineffective and may actually boost immune responses. the end of the susceptible period coincides with the emergence of free specific antibodies in serum. however, the previous administration of purified anti-ovalbumin antibodies (40 μg) was unable to block the induction of oral tolerance to ovalbumin in normal mice

Ecolog?-a austral , 2005,
Abstract: in a tropical forest patch of southeastern brazil, adult scarabaeidae beetles were used to test the hypothesis that fungivorous guilds have a higher proportion of generalist species than either frugivorous, necrophagous or coprophagous ones. no significant differences were found between guilds in relation to either the proportion of generalists or niche breadths of the component species. only two fungivorous specialist species were sampled. these results indicate that sporocarps eaten by scarabaeidae are not as rare as literature suggests. fungi may help maintain high species diversity of scarabaeidae in tropical forests.

Abstract: the internal checking during the industrial drying of radiata pine is studied. the percentage of internal checking is determined and some factors influencing the internal checking are analyzed during the industrial drying at conventional temperatures. the runs are made in a 150 m3 capacity dry kiln in an industrial plant of the eighth region (chile). the experimental design includes as variables, the origin site of the wood (clay, sand), the wood localization (central-wood, lateral-wood and transition-wood) and the type of cut (radial, tangential and mixed). the results indicate that the percentage of internal checking varies between 1 and 18% and that the origin site of the wood and the wood localization significantly condition the percentage of internal checking during the radiata pine industrial drying at conventional temperatures
