The Possible Utopia: A Gift of Hope and Reason for Action—Changing the Course of History!  [PDF]
Patricia Rodiles, José ángel Chevalier
Open Journal of Leadership (OJL) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojl.2015.42005
Abstract: Today, the world’s current state reflects how we are living in a critical and chaotic time which brings multiple and challenging problems in social, economic, ecological and cultural aspects among many others. However, for women and men of good will, who yearn for a better, more human, and more solidary world, it is very encouraging that, despite this sad reality, there is a “possible utopia” that would change the course of history. But everybody asks themselves: How can we face a challenge of this magnitude? What path should we follow? Will man be able to change his mind and heart to do so? Will man have the faith, spirit and strength required? Will humanity be able to transform its creations of death into structures of life? What story should be built from now on to the future? It is an enormous and extremely complex task to have a better world, but if we are not willing to start, here and now, where and when will it be? And if we do not, who will? In this sense, Einstein and Edmund Burke challenge us as humanity, with their great motivating and appropriate statements: “If you want different results, do not do always the same” (as cited in Davidovich, Nikolay, Laugerman, & Commodore, 2010: p. 23) and “For evil to triumph [on earth] it is enough that good men do nothing” (as cited in Bartlett, 1968: p. 454; Kirk, 2009: p. 204; Landau, 2006: p. 222). Now, more than ever, it is the best time to start. Without a doubt, it is a monumental challenge, but also a “unique opportunity” that demands the availability of men and women, bold and brave, in order to unite their wills, to make possible the impossible, because our future as humanity is truly at stake.
Simulated evolution applied to study the genetic code optimality using a model of codon reassignments

BMC Bioinformatics , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2105-12-56
Abstract: Here we used a genetic algorithm to search for better adapted hypothetical codes and as a method to guess the difficulty in finding such alternative codes, allowing to clearly situate the canonical code in the fitness landscape. This novel proposal of the use of evolutionary computing provides a new perspective in the open debate between the use of the statistical approach, which postulates that the genetic code conserves amino acid properties far better than expected from a random code, and the engineering approach, which tends to indicate that the canonical genetic code is still far from optimal. We used two models of hypothetical codes: one that reflects the known examples of codon reassignment and the model most used in the two approaches which reflects the current genetic code translation table. Although the standard code is far from a possible optimum considering both models, when the more realistic model of the codon reassignments was used, the evolutionary algorithm had more difficulty to overcome the efficiency of the canonical genetic code.Simulated evolution clearly reveals that the canonical genetic code is far from optimal regarding its optimization. Nevertheless, the efficiency of the canonical code increases when mistranslations are taken into account with the two models, as indicated by the fact that the best possible codes show the patterns of the standard genetic code. Our results are in accordance with the postulates of the engineering approach and indicate that the main arguments of the statistical approach are not enough to its assertion of the extreme efficiency of the canonical genetic code.The canonical genetic code is not universal although it is present in most complex genomes. Its establishment is still under discussion once the discovery of non-standard genetic codes altered the "frozen accident" [1]. Woese [2] was one of the first to consider the adaptability of the genetic code. He suggested that the patterns within the standard genetic
Una premisa fundacional: ser para todos
Saiz Aranguren, José ángel;
Andamios , 2007,
Abstract: the main idea expressed by fernando savater in his works in ethics on the subject of human rights is that, when we confront the question of to whom do we refer when we speak of human rights, to concrete, physical persons or to "collective persons," that is to say corporations, the response is obvious: we are speaking of individual persons, because collective persons don't exist.
Análisis Estratigráfico del cuerpo de torres de la Catedral Vieja de Salamanca
Lecanda Esteban, José ángel
Arqueología de la Arquitectura , 2003,
Abstract: The archaeological work carried out in the body of towers at the Catedral Vieja in Salamanca as part of their restoration, has in the first phase consisted basically of archaeological documentation and stratigraphic readings of its facings, taking samples for analysis, in addition to a new historical-documentary study and various surveys. However, this has not been an obstacle to deepening, from the first phase, historical knowledge of the cathedral’s construction stages. The use of applied archaeology in restoration, in this case, was not planned from the start as a necessary complementary technique, but rather as an instrument for resolving opposed restoration theories and practices.
