Abordagem do idoso em programas de saúde da família
Silvestre, Jorge Alexandre;Costa Neto, Milton Menezes da;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2003000300016
Abstract: this article discusses the role of the brazilian national policy for senior citizens' health in the promotion of healthy aging, preservation and improvement of functional capacity in the elderly, disease prevention, recovery of those who fall ill, and rehabilitation of those with limited functional capacity, will the goal of ensuring that senior citizens can remain in their surroundings and independently exercise their functions in society. care for the elderly should be based primarily on the family, with support from primary health care services, under the family health strategy, representing a link between the elderly and the health system. the article goes on to list some health problems among the elderly in which family health programs can have a major impact. the family health strategy in brazil is analyzed in relation to health care for the elderly, along with the responsibilities, skills, and attributions required by the health care team.
Eficiência, gest?o e meio ambiente na carcinicultura do Rio Grande do Norte
Silva, Jorge Luiz Mariano da;Sampaio, Luciano Menezes Bezerra;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032009000400004
Abstract: this paper investigates shrimp small and median farms performance in rio grande do norte in two steps. first, technical efficiency was estimated by nonparametric production frontiers, data envelopment analysis (dea) and free disposal hull (fdh). as a second stage, after dea and fdh analysis, the degree of inefficiency was explained by a statistical tobit model, in terms of managerial indicators and localization. average efficiencies were bigger for the extensive and semi-intensive production system. the results indicated that some managerial practices did not reduce the inefficiency. the localization affected inefficiency: producers within estuaries associated with the emissions of small amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus were efficient, i.e., a best use of inputs can reduce environmental impacts.
The Political History of Twentieth-Century Portugal
Manuel Bai?a,Paulo Jorge Fernandes,Filipe Ribeiro de Menezes
E-Journal of Portuguese History , 2003,
Abstract: The political history of twentieth-century Portugal has recently become the focus of intense research by historians of that country. This article attempts both to summarise the political developments of the period and to provide an English-language readership with an introduction to the on-going debate. This debate is driven to a great extent by the attempt to explain the reasons for the longevity of Salazar's New State and by the attempt to place it within a broader European context. As a result, the regime immediately preceding the New State, the First Republic, has been somewhat neglected by Portuguese historians.

Gap Opening by Asymmetric Doping in Graphene Bilayers
Marcos G. Menezes,Rodrigo B. Capaz,Jorge L. B. Faria
Physics , 2010, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.82.245414
Abstract: We study the energy gap opening in the electronic spectrum of graphene bilayers caused by asym- metric doping. Both substitutional impurities (boron acceptors and nitrogen donors) and adsorbed potassium donors are considered. The gap evolution with dopant concentration is compared to the situation in which the asymmetry between the layers is induced by an external electric field. The effects of adsorbed potassium are similar to that of an electric field, but substitutional impurities behave quite differently, showing smaller band gaps and a large sensitivity to disorder and sublattice occupation.
Second Language Acquisition: Reconciling Theories  [PDF]
Vera Menezes
Open Journal of Applied Sciences (OJAppS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojapps.2013.37050

This article argues that previous attempts to explain SLA should not be disregarded. Instead, when they are put together, they provide a broader and deeper view of the acquisition process. There is evidence to support the claim that second language acquisition (SLA) is a complex adaptive system due to its inherent ability to adapt to different conditions present in both internal and external environments. Based on this understanding, widely discussed second language theories, including behaviorism, will be treated as explanations of parts of a whole, since each captures a different aspect of SLA. In order to justify this assumption, excerpts from some English language learning histories are provided to exemplify how learners describe their learning processes. The final claim is that SLA should be seen as a chaotic/complex system.

PLOS ONE , 2011, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0026042
Abstract: Background To determine the prevalence and associated factors with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a cohort of HIV-positive individuals with undetectable viral load on HAART. Methods From March, 2009 to September 2009, 213 individuals between 18-70 years, period on HAART ≥12 months, viral load < 50 copies/mm3, and CD4 ≥ 200 cells/mm3, were consecutively enrolled at the outpatient clinic of Hospital de Clínicas, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Exclusion criteria were obesity, malnourishment, amputee, paraplegic, previous history of renal disease, pregnancy and hepatic insufficiency. Renal function was determined by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) assessed by the modification of diet in renal disease. CKD was defined as an eGFR less or equal than 60 ml/min/1.73 m2, for a period of at least 3 months. Poisson regression was used to determine factors associated with CKD. Results CKD was diagnosed in 8.4% of the population, and after adjustment, the risk factors were hypertension (RR = 3.88, 95%CI, 1.84 - 8.16), time on HAART (RR = 1.15, 95%CI,1.03–1.27) and tenofovir exposure (RR = 2.25, 95%CI, 1.04–4.95). Higher weight (RR = ,0.88 95%CI, 0.82–0.96) was associated to normal function. Conclusions CKD was a common finding in this cohort of patients and was related to hypertension, time on HAART and tenofovir exposure. We suggest a more frequent monitoring of renal function, especially for those with risk factors to early identify renal impairment.
Colostomia continente com esfíncter artificial de silicone: estudo em c?es
Gomes, Edmundo Guilherme de Almeida;Brandt, Carlos Teixeira;Jucá, Mario Jorge;Menezes, Hunaldo Lima de;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502003000600010
Abstract: purpose: this was the rational and the aim of the present investigation. artificial silicone coated sphincters were implanted in dog?s colostomies. it was analyzed the continence for solid and liquid stools as well as the complications from these surgical procedures. methods: it was used 13 mongrel dogs, eleven males and two females, weights from 16 to 30kg ( 22.5 + 4.3kg ). terminal colostomies were made using the c c - silimed? devices, which were activated for an eight-hour periods. the animals were observed for 15 weeks. results: fecal continence was proved by barium enema. the pressure in the system varied from 60 to 80cm of water ( 74.8 + 5.0cm ). the liquid volume inserted in the reservoir varied from 5 to 8ml ( 6.9 + 0.8ml ). fecal continence was obtained in all animals, however, there was an eventual soiling when abdominal pressure was raised. wound infection occurs in three dogs ( 23.1% ) and intestinal obstruction in one ( 7.7% ). conclusion: the silicone artificial sphincter ( c c - silimed? ) was effective for obtaining continence for solid and liquid stools. the results of this investigation give support to the future use of this sphincter in human patients with definitive colostomy.
Avalia??o hemodinamica em paciente criticamente enfermo
Rocha, Paulo Novis;Menezes, Jorge Arnaldo Valente de;Suassuna, José Hermógenes Rocco;
Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-28002010000200009
Abstract: a growing fraction of the clinical duties of nephrologists is undertaken inside intensive care units. while assessing patients with acute renal failure in the context of circulatory collapse, which are also edematous and/or with impaired gas exchanges, the nephrologist must decide between two opposing therapies: 1) remove volume with the aid of dialysis or diuretics to improve the edematous state; 2) volume expand to improve hemodynamics. to minimize the odds of making incorrect choices, the nephrologist must be familiar with the tools available for determining the adequacy of volume status and for invasive hemodynamic monitoring in the critically ill patient. in this manuscript, we will briefly review the physiology of extra cellular fluid volume regulation and then tackle the issue of volume status assessment, based on clinical and hemodynamic criteria.
